  • Here’s to February and Early Spring with Champagne Charles de Cazanove Stradivarius

    FullSizeRender - Version 32016-01-28Charles-de-cazanove-stradivarius-Champagne-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

Here comes February! And, we’re reaching for another sparkling wine to welcome this often unpredictable weather month. Instead of relying on that pesky groundhog to predict an early spring and put us in a good mood, we’re placing our faith in a reliable Champagne house that has served us well.

Having featured and enjoyed the bubbles of Charles de Cazanove twice in 2015, it only makes sense that their Champagne Stradivarius has real promise (and besides, we’re intrigued by the name).

Here’s what people are saying ...

The winemaker calls Charles de Cazanove Stradivarius 2000

    • A symphony of meaning and passion
    • Its unique flavour … provides an original harmony
    • Bouquet opens on ripe fruit, walnut, and almond aromas
    • A powerful, hearty finish

Wine Enthusiast gave Stradivarius (91 points) describing it as a …

    • Ripe, beautifully integrated Champagne
    • Beginnings of nutty, toasty maturity
    • Full in the mouth with a delicate and creamy mousse
    • Not for aging … an impressive wine to drink now

    FullSizeRender - Version 22016-01-28Charles-de-cazanove-stradivarius-Champagne-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

Bauer Wine & Spirits, where we purchased our bottle, had the most intriguing tasting notes …
    • Yellow-gold
    • Deep, toasty aromas of orange marmalade, gingerbread, brown butter
    • A hint of floral honey and a livelier touch of lemon curd
    • Supple in texture and gently smoky
    • Broad candied citrus, poached pear flavors, late notes of buttered toast & spices
    • Fully mature Champagne finishes with strong thrust, clinging honey, pear notes & very good persistence

Talk about a morale booster, how could we pass up an opportunity like this? Our notes to follow.

Oh, and, maybe we’ll slip some to Punxsutawney Phil just to loosen the guy up, a little. Cheers!

    UPDATE (02.01.16) –

We toasted February with the Stradivarius, then chose the descriptions from above that we think fit best.

    • Definitely a unique flavor
    • Almond and brown butter aromas
    • Nutty, toasty maturity
    • Full in the mouth
    • A hint of floral honey, gently smoky
    • Broad candied citrus, pear notes
    • Powerful, hearty finish

While this Champagne is not the lighter, everyday style we’re accustomed to, it is a nice change on the right occasion. And with certain foods, like the French onion soup we enjoyed with it tonight, it was outstanding.

UPDATE (02.02.16) – On a personal note, Thanks Phil.

  • Our First Taste of 2016 with Champagne Mouzon Leroux L’ineffable

Toasting the new year with an impressive sparkler … what better way to start 2016!

Even though expectations were already high after our pre-holiday wine search, there’s no better feeling than having a plan succeed.

After we clinked glasses and took our first sips of Mouzon Leroux L’ineffable, we wanted to applaud. Although the winemaker’s choice of “ineffable” to name this Champagne fits it well, we can’t resist at least attempting to describe the indescribable:

    • Luxurious on the nose & palate
    • Big, but very approachable
    • Bubbles everywhere!
    • First sip: Fruit with a palate-cleansing, citrus follow-up (varies w/wine temperature)
    • Don’t Overchill (We liked L’ineffable best as it warmed.)
    • Glows in the companionship of food (we had two Thai dishes, one with beef)
    • Something for everyone – especially a red wine lover
    • Woke up the next day still thinking about how good this Champagne is

Other opinions of Champagne Mouzon Leroux L’ineffable:

    Veron Champagne Guide 2015

    • Elegant & persistent ring of bubbles
    • Sumptuous
    • Bloomed aromas of honey, caramel, almond, and chestnut
    • generous scents of crystallised red fruits and delicate spices
    • Deep and dense … remarkable minerality … very great length on the palate

    • A full-bodied, delightful Champagne
    • a heavy, powerful Champagne

    • focused red apple favors with a touch of star anise and cinnamon

    • Rated Cuvée L’ineffable 92 out of 100

  • Charles de Cazanove Rosé Champagne – One Happy Surprise!

    CHE_9093 - Version 22015-10-02Charles-de cazanove-rose-champagne-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

Minutes before leaving for Provincetown, Penny quickly grabbed what she thought was a bottle of our favorite Charles de Cazanove brut from the wine rack. It wasn’t until we’d arrived on-Cape and had begun to unpack that she realized it was actually their rosé, which we hadn't tried.

After the long drive, we quickly settled in and treated ourselves to a couple of glasses of Charles de Cazanove Rosé Champagne.

Our first reaction, “Impressive!” Penny said this bubbly had, “a little bit of the yeasty flavor that I love in Bollinger and the flavor of the fruit without the sweetness of added dosage.”

    IMG_8578 - Version 22015-10-04Charles-de cazanove-rose-champagne-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

Charles de Cazanove Rosé is a blend of 15% Chardonnay, 50% Pinot Noir, 20% Pinot Meunier, 15% Côteaux Champenois Rouge.

The winemaker describes a “… volume, fullness and strength on the palate, with good substance.”

“This rosé has a lovely salmon-pink colour and delicious candied fruit and rose petal aromas.”

    IMG_4464 - Version 22015-09-30Charles-de cazanove-rose-champagne-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

In a cocktail glass, I thought it looked like an inviting mixed drink. It was a great match with Chef José Andrés super light, olive oil potato chips.

We also had it with a good Cabot cheddar, some pretzel chips, and a fresh loaf of French bread.”

Charles de Cazanove Rosé Champagne, a very satisfying way to start a vacation and this new month. One Happy Surprise!

  • Blason de Bourgogne Crémant: September’s Sparkler

Sparkling wines don't have to be expensive to be fun! For example, we picked up this bottle of Blason de Bourgogne Crémant de Bourgogne at Trader Joe's for $11.99.

    CHE_8588 - Version 22015-08-28Blason-de-Bourgogne-Crémant-de-Bourgogne-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

Last month we told you that we love sparklers that are rich with Pinot Noir flavor. This one, a blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay, comes from a family collection that includes variations for different tastes. We've tried the others in the past, but this is the one we come back to when we want an inexpensive, fun glass of fizz.

You may find the brut, the rosé, or the reserve (which we have not found around here as of yet) more to your taste.

Sometimes your reason for buying a sparkling wine might not call for spending big bucks, but you still want good flavor and dependable bubbles. Blason delivers both. So sip it on a boat as you sail through September. Pack it for a picnic. Add it to a sangria base to create a sparkling sangria. Make mimosas for brunch or get creative with sparkling cocktails.

We hope you'll join us in our resolution to start each month with a glass of sparkling wine. Toast to something you're looking forward to in the month ahead or were thankful for in the month past.

  • Champagne Moutard Brut Grande Cuvée, Love at First Sip!

As Pinot Noir lovers, we expected to like this grower Champagne. We didn’t anticipate wanting to buy a case after the first sip! Simply put, Moutard Grande Cuvée fits our taste, something Howie Rubin of Bauer Wine & Spirits knows well.

    DSC_6492 - Version 22015-07-29--champagne-Moutard-grande cruvee-howie-rubin-bauer-wines-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

Through the years, many of our Sparkling Resolution wines have come from his suggestions. For August we asked him to select this month’s sparkler and he came up with a new favorite that made us go back for more.

    CHE_8076 - Version 22015-07-29-champagne-moutard-grande-cruvee© 2014 Penny Cherubino

Our constant search for, and love of, grower Champagnes doesn’t surprise Rubin who compares the increased interest in this category of winemakers to the locavore farm-to-table movement. “People want to know where their food and libation come from,” he explains, “and consuming small grower champagne satisfies that curiosity.”

Look at this way, “Which would you rather consume,” says Rubin, “a big, juicy, ripe tomato right off the farm, or one of those colorless and flavorless tomatoes that shows up in your salad … in January?”

    Similarly,
“When deciding between a small grower champagne or a mass produced version of the same style of wine,” Rubin says the choice is obvious. “Champagnes that are bottled by growers will usually be from a specific village and will be their top choice of grapes, which obviously they won’t sell to the big houses.”

    CHE_7948 - Version 22015-07-29-champagne-moutard-grande-cruvee© 2014 Penny Cherubino

The Moutard Grand Cuvee Brut Champagne pedigree includes 100% Pinot Noir grown in clay-limestone soils. The hand harvested grapes undergo a gentle pressing and are vinified in stainless steel tanks. Moutard proudly describes its production as a blend of several of the best vintages.

    Tasting Notes:

The winemaker points to a, “refined, rich nose which evokes notes of butter, almond and brioche. Lively, elegant and balanced palate with good mouthfill.”

Distributor Polaner Selections touts, “A rich and mineral-driven Blanc de Noirs at an exceptional value.”

    Wine Spectator

    Rating: 90

“Bright and fresh, with a honey-laced finish.”

    Vinous

    Rating: 89

“… 100% Pinot Noir is laced with sweet tobacco, flowers, mint, dried herbs and red stone fruits.”

Eric Asimov, (NY Times wine critic)

“ … the Grande Cuvée from Moutard … showed its 100 percent pinot noir character in its rich, full-bodied texture and ripe fruit flavors.”

    Howie Rubin (Bauer Wines)

“… aromas of fresh baked bread and wild strawberries … bright apple and quince flavors.”

We think what this wine doesn’t give up on the nose, it makes up on the palate. Perhaps Howie Rubin summed it up best, “Great champagnes are characterized by a long, persistent finish, and that’s where the Moutard shines. Compare it to one of the big names in champagne and you will see the difference.”

Here’s to August! And, here’s to Grower Champagnes!

We purchased our bottle of Champagne Moutard Brut Grande Cuvée at Bauer Wine & Spirits (price: $39.99).

  • Michael Serpa Selects Champagne Jacquesson Cuvée 736 as Our Sparkler for June 2015

We toast June 2015 with Champagne Jacquesson Cuvée 736 thanks to Chef and Partner Michael Serpa from Select Oyster Bar in Boston’s Back Bay.

    CHE_7729 - Version 32015-05-27-jacquesson-champagne-select-oyster-bar-patio-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

Since the opening of this neighborhood spot back in April, we’ve enjoyed many glasses of sparkling wine with our meals and afternoon snacks at the Select bar. We picked one and then another as a possible wine to celebrate the arrival of June, but couldn’t decide. We finally asked Chef Serpa if he would choose for us and he agreed.

    CHE_7687 - Version 22015-05-27-jacquesson-champagne-select-oyster-bar-patio-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

We slipped out onto the patio at Select while lunch customers were finishing up their meals to photograph this wine.

One of the first things we learned was that, in addition to having a sparkler to enjoy on June 1st, our newest wine mentor was offering us another importer to add to our list of great resources. He loves the wines from Vintage 59 and offers a number of selections from their portfolio on his current list.

Chef Serpa calls Champagne Jacquesson Cuvée 736, “Balanced.” We agree and love that he has picked so many wines like this that match perfectly with his food. As to this one, he pointed out, “Champagne is the ultimate food wine!”

    CHE_7704 - Version 22015-05-27-jacquesson-champagne-select-oyster-bar-patio-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

You’ll notice that the glasses used for this tasting (which was generously shared with us) are not flutes.

Serpa has great reasons for his sparkling wine glass choice, “Any nicer sparkling wine, I think, just works much better in a standard kind of wine glass rather than a flute, just because you get the aroma…” “When you’re drinking great wine,” he said, “I think it should be in a proper glass where you’re going to get the full experience of the wine.”

He recognizes the celebratory feel of a flute and you’ll find flutes on hand at Select, but you may be offered the choice of a flute or a wine glass with a particular wine.

    DSC_6000 - Version 22015-05-27michael-serpa--jacquesson-champagne-select-oyster-bar-patio-© 2014 Penny Cherubino   DSC_5999 - Version 22015-05-27chef-michael-serpa-jacquesson-champagne-select-oyster-bar-patio-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

Between lunch and dinner service, we moved inside to the large table by the window to talk more about wine.

    Wine Temperature

You may also have noticed that he did not put this bottle in a wine chiller. We often suggest drinking a great wine, like this one, through a range of temperatures. We were delighted that he agrees, “As it warms up, you taste a little bit more of the wine.” He explained that with the lower alcohol levels in many sparkling wines, you won’t experience that hot taste of alcohol as the wine warms, the way you might in a 15% ABV wine. You just enjoy more of the full flavor the wine has to offer.

    A Toast for June

We asked Chef Serpa what he’ll be toasting on June 1st as he joins us in welcoming a Happy New Month! He has great reason to celebrate because he’ll be toasting his 30th birthday on June 2nd. He said, “I think it’s going to be a good year!” We agreed and wished him a good decade. He responded that the first 30 were good!

Click over to twitter @michaelserpa, (where he claims the title of, “Handyman @selectboston in Boston’s Back Bay,”) and wish him a Happy Birthday on June 2nd. Or post a birthday greeting on the Select Facebook page. He certainly has our best wishes for a happy and successful third decade of life.

A Big Thank You to Chef Serpa!

Thank you for the time you took out of a busy afternoon to share this wonderful wine with us and our readers. And, thanks for starting a new BostonZest tradition of letting people we trust select our sparkler of the month, from time to time.

If you like Pinot Noir, this will please you. (90% Pinot Noir, 10% Gamay)

    • Not overpowering
    • Fruit just right for me
    • Very drinkable (with food & solo)
    • Impressive Mousse
    • Do Not Over-Chill

While this crémant is fine right from the chiller, it really caresses you as its temperature rises – becoming fruitier, softer, and friendlier.

    Penny …

Some reviewers have called it a picnic wine, maybe that’s why we went out to buy more during this cold spell. We needed the hope of spring.

We’ve also tried their Pinot Noir Brut and Reserve. Of the two, we like the Pinot better.
