Calling all Moth Mavens: Name That Moth!

Found this large moth sitting on the steps as we returned home from a dog walk last week. 

We tried a little image matching but didn't succeed in making a positive identification. But, perhaps one of you is a moth maven and can tell us a bit about this beautiful creature.
