  • When Jordan Marsh Was the Heart of Downtown Crossing

It was recently announced that with the settlement of a lawsuit Strategic Marks, a company with plans for its future, at least online, has acquired the rights to the Jordan Marsh name. This had me thinking about the past and the importance of Jordan Marsh here in Boston.

This postcard circa 1907-1915 from the Boston Public Library Collection shows the expanded main store on the corner of Summer and Washington Streets.

    Jordan Marsh 1938

By 1938 the company had acquired more property and added the home furnishings annex across Avon Street. In the years to follow, they would acquire all the property on those blocks. I seem to recall that they also owned or rented space in some additional buildings in the area that were used for sales support departments. (Disclosure: I worked for Jordan Marsh for a number of years.)

    History from Around the Internet

    Shopping days in retro boston

Locally we have the site: Shopping Days in Retro Boston with some great coverage of Jordan Marsh. I found the story of the sky bridge from the main store to the annex, interesting.

    Department store museum

There are national sites like the Department Store Museum that specialize in retail history state by state. From the homepage you can look up the major stores in most states.

And the store has been featured on Mass Moments.

What are your Jordan Marsh memories? Did you ever work in a department store? If so, what do you think of service today?

Watch for our upcoming post on Jordan Marsh Blueberry Muffins.

  • Brazil Is Way Ahead of the U.S. in Dietary Guidlines

For today's Friday Link, we are connecting you to Marion Nelson's discussion of Brazil's recently updated dietary guidelines. This list of suggestions for healthy eating is so far ahead of what the U.S. is offering that I think we should all forget those food pyramids and post the Brazilian version on the front of the refrigerator.

In place of a disussion of nutrients, these are a list of simple statements. Such as, "Prepare meals from staple and fresh foods."

You can read the 3 Golden Rules and 10 Guidelines over on the Food Politics blog.

I love the fact that the Brazilian Government talks about the importance of community as a part of healthy eating. One guideline is "Eat in company whenever possible." This summer, you could begin by gathering friends for a pot luck picnic in one of Boston's beautiful parks.

    IMG_6551 - Version 22013-07-02-copley-farmers-market-atlas-farm-rainbow-carrots-© 2011 Penny Cherubino copy

The final guideline is, "Be critical of the commercial advertisement of food products." Tell me, when was the last time you saw an ad for raw carrots? And, while they do come in different colors, these beauties don't have calorie and fat laden sauces added and you don't have to decide between 15 flavors.

You can download a pdf of the original document in Portuguese here.

Do these guidelines make more sense to you than the U.S. version?

  • Discovering November Bubbles! Canard-Duchêne Comes to U.S.

    DSC_8673 - Version 22013-09-26-Canard-Duchêne-brut-champagne-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

One sip of Canard-Duchêne Authentic Brut and we knew we had discovered a special Champagne. Toast on the nose and luscious Pinot fruit on the palate – not overwhelming, just right.

The blend of 45% Pinot Noir, 35% Pinot Meunier, and 20% Chardonnay captured our attention and never let go. Canard-Duchêne Cellar Master Laurent Fédou puts it best with the words “intensity … complexity … and balance” to describe their Champagnes.

He characterizes the Authentic Brut as having …

    • “A straw-yellow appearance and delicate mousse."
    • "Intense aromas of fresh fruit typical of the Pinot varietals."
    • "Fruity flavours [that] jostle with pastry notes, a sign of excellent maturity.”

We always like to taste through the temperatures of our first glass of wine. In this case, moving from the initial chilled sip to that warmer last splash brought out more of the Chardonnay.

After lingering over the rest of the bottle, our only question was, “Why haven’t we heard about this Champagne before?” Well, it hasn’t been readily available in the U.S. until recently, but has been well-known and respected for more than a century in other parts of the world.

We found our bottle of Canard-Duchêne for $38 at The Urban Grape, South End

Clinking glasses to toast each new month has never been more enjoyable – à votre santé!
