  • Toasting July with Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Brut!

    DSC_5908 - Version 22013-06-29-piper-heidsieck-brut-champagne-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Since July is one of my favorite months, celebrating its arrival with a favorite sparkler – Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Brut – is an easy choice! And, that’s how it should be.

Our tradition, that began with a New Year’s Eve toast several years ago, is all about the fun of clinking glasses of bubbly to welcome each new month. Think of it as giving the next 31 days the benefit of the doubt by starting out with something you really enjoy.

While our taste for sparkling wine covers a broad range, there are bottles that we definitely reach for more often, like Piper-Heidsieck.

It’s not complicated. This cuvee brut is mainly Pinot Noir with Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay in supporting roles. We like the toasty aroma and the balance of this blend. It is a very good Champagne. Here’s to July!

  • Pouring Jewels from a Bottle of Bailly Lapierre Crémant!

We’re celebrating the arrival of June by pouring sparkling jewels from a bottle of Bailly Lapierre Crémant! As the bubbles tumble into our flutes, there’s a moment of pure joy while this sparkler releases its frothy treasure igniting silly grins all around.

    CHE_7457 - Version 32013-05-27-Bailly-Lapeirre-Brut-cremantpinot-noir-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

There’s no doubt that we’re attracted to sparkling wine for its fun factor, but besides sight and sound appeal, it’s the aromas and flavors that hold our attention!

This Bailly Lapierre Crémant is a Blanc de Noirs, “a white made from black Pinot Noir grapes.” And, since we’re enormous pinot fans, we really like this wine. The winemaker calls the style, “full, deep, and powerful with a fruitiness in the mouth that conjures up a red…”

    CHE_7566 - Version 22013-05-28-Bailly-Lapeirre-Brut-cremantpinot-noir-© 2013 Ed Cherubino-jpg© 2011 Penny Cherubino

After our initial sips from a chilled bottle we used the words, “nice, light balance, crisp finish, some toast on the nose.” As it warmed, we were calling this crémant a “baby Bollinger!”

Agree or not, this sparkler definitely tastes like a more expensive wine.

    CHE_7564 - Version 22013-05-28-Bailly-Lapeirre-Brut-cremantpinot-noir-© 2013 Ed Cherubino-jpg© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Plus, at around $18 a bottle, it’s an exceptional value. We’ve seen Bailly Lapierre Crémant de Bourgogne Pinot Noir at Bauer Wine & Spirits in Boston and at Whole Foods/River St., Cambridge

    Happy New Month!

  • Toast April with Nino Franco Prosecco – an 11% Sparkler!

Another month means another sparkling toast from us to the future. This time, we raise a glass of Nino Franco Rustico Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG. Not only does this wonderful Italian sparkler add light and life to our day, but it also does it with a low 11% alcohol so that we can have a glass for lunch and then go back to work.

(Note: We're not recommending that you drink and drive or do critical tasks after a glass of wine. We walk to our home office and only operate keyboards and cameras.)

    DSC_2818 - Version 22013-03-25-Nino Franco-prosecco-low-alcohol-wine-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

This wine is 100% Glera, the traditional grape for Prosecco. In fact, the grape was called Prosecco for most of its history until recently. According to Wikipedia, the book "Il roccolo Ditirambo," written by Aureliano Acanti in 1754 says, "And now I would like to wet my mouth with that Prosecco with its apple bouquet."

    DSC_2825 - Version 22013-03-25-Nino Franco-prosecco-low-alcohol-wine-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

This sparkler is also a great value when you can find it around the $15.99 price at retail. We bought ours at Bauer Wine & Spirits on Newbury Street.

It is straw colored with persistent bubbles and a crisp, pleasant flavor and, yes, an apple note that makes you understand how a host in the Veneto or Friuli regions of Italy might greet evey guest with a glass of this as a sparkling welcome.

    Photo

You'll also find it on wine lists across the area. While it is about to rotate off the list at Island Creek Oyster Bar in Kenmore Square, we did enjoy a glass for lunch last week and could return to work and accomplish something post Nino! (Island Creek also has a reserve offering from Nino Franco on the current list that you may want to try.)

  • March Sparkles with Argyle’s 2001 Extended Tirage Brut – It’s a Sure Thing!

    EAC_1338 - Version 22012-12-25-argyle-extended-triage-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Unlike the often unpredictable month of March (heat waves, Ides of March, sequestration … ), Argyle’s 2001 Extended Tirage Brut is a sure thing! While we’re always looking for a worthy sparkler that’s capable of wowing us as we celebrate the arrival of a new month, this astonishing bottle of wine actually is the celebration.

    EAC_1356 - Version 22012-12-25-argyle-extended-triage-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

52% Chardonnay, 45% Pinot Noir, 3% Pinot Meunier

As longtime Argyle fans, we’ve come to expect greatness, but this sparkler gets an extra star.
Penny thinks it, ”makes its Argyle pinot roots very apparent! Not only do you taste pinot, but Argyle pinot! This must have made Rollin smile.” (The man behind Argyle, Rollin Soles, told us about his love of pinot noir and sparkling wine in this 2011 Video Interview.)

We both say, “Don’t over-chill this gem.” While we loved the cold bubbles, it doesn’t need cold. Drink through the temperatures. This wine deserves the respect you’d give a Krug!"

Ed tasted, “Vanilla … butter” and suggested, “rolling it around in your mouth for maximum flavor.”

    EAC_1345 - Version 22012-12-25-argyle-extended-triage-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Argyle Wines 2001 Extended Tirage Brut Tasting Notes include:

    • Nose – “honey drizzled chevre on warm toasted artisan bread” … “brioche”
    • “delicate, tiny bubbles”
    • “creamy yet … clean acidity”
    • Flavors, “vanilla bean, creme brulee, baked pear”…“hints of licorice, peach, spun sugar.”

Although the 2001 Extended Tirage is officially Sold Out, you still might be able to find a bottle, or you could simply move on to the 2002 version. Judging from its stellar reviews, you will not be disappointed.

Here’s to March! We’re ready for whatever it brings!
