Once upon a time, back in 1884, Architect George Meacham designed a fairy tale of a building at 152 Newbury Street for the Massachusetts Bicycle Club. Within 5 years, it was aquired by its larger neighbor, the Boston Art Club.
In this photo of the Boston Art Club from the Boston Public Library Collection, you can get a glimpse of this delightful little charmer. The BPL photo description includes, "The smaller building to the right is the Boston Bicycle Club. Cyclists could ride right through the entrance. It is not known whether or not the young tricyclists to the left were members."
This magazine article with its illustration gives a better view of the details that made this a standout.
Today, its detail is gone and it has been intergratead into the Snowden International School. A sad loss for lovers of architecture.
