  • Winter Farmers’ Markets 2012 – 2013

With the summer farmers’ market season coming to a close Thanksgiving week, it’s time to spread the word on winter markets. Today's Friday Link will take you to farmers' markets around the area.

A few, like the Brookline Winter Farmers' Market, have opened in time to add local flavor to your Thanksgiving menu. Here's our full report on the Brookline Winter Market from earlier this week.

The team over at Mass Farmers’ Markets says, “Turns out they are opening up all over the state! We are expecting more than 30 of them to crop up this winter; to find out if there is a Winter Market opening up near you visit our website [www.massfarmersmarkets.org], click on the FIND tab and type the word "WINTER' in the 'name of market' field.” They are adding new information as market details are submitted.

Here are some Boston area dates & locations:

Brookline Winter Farmers’ Market, Sundays, Noon – 5pm, (Nov 4 – Early June) at The Arcade, Coolidge Corner, 318 Harvard St., Brookline

Egleston Farmers’ Market, Some Saturdays, 11am – 2pm, (Nov 10 – Feb 23) 45 Brookside Ave., Jamaica Plain (Details on dates at www.eglestonfarmersmarket.org)

    Newton Highlands Winter Farmers' Market, Tuesdays, 1:30pm – 6:00pm, (Nov 13 – June 25)

Somerville Winter Farmers' Market, Saturdays, 9:30am – 2pm, (Dec 1 – Apr 13) The Armory, 191 Highland Ave., Somerville

Cambridge Winter Farmers’ Market, Saturdays, 10am – 2pm, (Jan 5 – Apr 27) Cambridge Community Center, 5 Callender Street, Cambridge

Wayland Winter Farmers’ Market, Saturdays, 10am – 2pm, (Jan 5 – March 9) Russell’s Garden Center, 397 Boston Post Road, Rte 20, Wayland

Codman Square Winter Farmers’ Market, Sundays, Noon – 4 pm, (Jan 6 – March 24) Codman Square Health Center, 6 Norfolk Street, Dorchester

    A Destination Market in Wayland

We've included the Wayland Market in this list because this is a wonderful destination market.

When father frost has us in his icy grip, the Wayland Winter Market at Russell’s Garden Center is a trip to the tropics. Russell’s lush greenhouses are turned into a festival of food vendors. They not only sell products for you to enjoy at home, but also host a food court where you can enjoy breakfast or lunch in the greenhouse.

Wayland Winter Farmers' Market’s “Massachusetts Farm Wineries Day”

This market supports all aspects of local food production. In addition to having local wine and cheese producers on their regular vendor list, they hold special events for them. The annual Massachusetts Farm Wineries Day will be held on January 26. This year, the Russell’s team has added a Farm Cheese Day on March 2nd. These are opportunities to sample, purchase, and support these value-added products from area farms.

Update: Over on Chowhound I learned about the  Medford Winter Farmers' Market on Thursdays from 3 pm to 7pm at Hyatt Place in Medford Square.

  • Final Days to Order a Pie In The Sky

Thanksgiving is next week and you only have a couple more days to order a pie from Pie in the Sky! Saturday is the deadline.

    Pie in the sky

    Here's how it works.

More than 150 of your favorite Boston area chefs and bakers donate their time and talent to bake more than 10,000 apple, pecan, pumpkin, and sweet potato pies. While you can't order a pie from a specific baker, the organizers say, "we assure you that all the pies are made with love."

Hundreds more individuals, community groups, businesses, and social organizations volunteer to sell and distribute those pies.

People, like you, order their holiday dessert through this effort. The money raised is used by Community Servings.

As they say on their webpage, "Each $25 pie you purchase will provide a week's worth of free, home-delivered meals for a man, woman or child in Eastern Massachusetts who is battling a critical illness such as HIV/AIDS, cancer, diabetes or MS."

On the day before Thanksgiving, Wednesday, November 21, 2012 you pick up your pie at the location you selected when you placed your order. There are more than 40 pick-up sites in the Greater Boston area.

  • Brookline Winter Farmers’ Market in the Arcade Building, Coolidge Corner

Last Sunday afternoon, we went to the grand opening of the new Brookline Winter Farmers' Market at the Arcade Building on Harvard Street in Coolidge Corner.

Some of our favorite vendors from the town's seasonal outdoor market moved inside this wonderful, 1927 architectural gem for the winter. And, they've given us a reason to get to know the wonderful small businesses that are permanently located in this space. We will be doing a follow up story on the Arcade and its businesses!

One end of the array of vendors was anchored by Stillman's Farm with both produce, eggs, and meat …

… while Silverbrook Farm had their selection of organic food and jams at the other end. That's Chef JJ Gonson from Cuisine en Locale checking one more thing off her shopping list. JJ moved from vendor-to-vendor saying hello to friends, shopping the market, and leaving smiling faces in her wake.

We hope by next week market organizers will have lots of balloons, signs, and perhaps someone dancing in a broccoli suit outside both market entrances to let passersby know what's happening inside. But, in case they don't, here's what you need to help you find it.

This market is scheduled to operate until June.

  • 7 Reasons to “Freeze” Your Cookies!

    DSC_9538 - Version 22012-10-26-oatmeal-raisin-cookie-forzen-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

While I’ve always been a huge cookie fan and have devoured them in just about every form imaginable (soft, crunchy, pre-cooked, hot from the oven … ) I’m here to say, “Freeze Your Cookies!” I know, it sounds extreme but hear me out.

    DSC_9707 - Version 22012-10-27-oatmeal-raisin-cookie-forzen-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

First, you need a quality cookie – I prefer the giant Homemade Oatmeal Raisin Cookies from Cook’s Farm and Bakery – the thicker the better with a generous amount of raisins. If you’re going to try this, don’t hold back!

    DSC_9582 - Version 22012-10-26-oatmeal-raisin-cookie-forzen-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

If you’re at all sceptical (I can still remember my first time), here are:

7 Reasons to Freeze Your Cookies!

    • Won’t bend as easily when slipped into a pocket or bag.
    • Keeps the cookie fresher, longer.
    • Great on a warm, summer day or after a hard workout!
    • Slows cookie consumption rate (CCR) allowing greater enjoyment of each morsel.
    • A lower CCR may mean fewer cookies eaten at one time, stretching your cookie supply not your waistline.

    DSC_9675 - Version 22012-10-27-oatmeal-raisin-cookie-forzen-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

    • Serving in broken, bite-sized chunks adds to convenience, especially when watching TV.
    • Anything sweet and frozen just seems to taste better.

As is often the case with any specialized cookie eating technique, there can be some, uh … drawbacks –

    • Produces more crumbs than conventional method.

    DSC_9636 - Version 22012-10-27-oatmeal-raisin-cookie-forzen-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

    • FOR BEST RESULTS: Warm frozen cookie in mouth before chomping (this may take 15-seconds or more).
    • ADVISORY: Check with a dental professional before consuming frozen cookies.

While I’ve always been a huge cookie fan and have devoured them in just about every form imaginable (soft, crunchy, pre-cooked, hot from the oven … ) I’m here to say, “Freeze Your Cookies!” I know, it sounds extreme but hear me out.

First, you need a quality cookie – I prefer the giant Homemade Oatmeal Raisin Cookies from Cook’s Farm and Bakery – the thicker the better with a generous amount of raisins. If you’re going to try this, don’t hold back!

    • FOR BEST RESULTS: Warm frozen cookie in mouth before chomping (this may take 15-seconds or more).
    • ADVISORY: Check with a dental professional before consuming frozen cookies.
