Are you thankful for your own companion animals and all the service animals that make our lives safer, healthier, and more fulfilling?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/bostonzest.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00e54fc42bb8883401b7c934d86b970b-popup\" onclick=\"window.open( this.href, &#39;_blank&#39;, &#39;width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0&#39; ); return false\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_5941\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00e54fc42bb8883401b7c934d86b970b img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/bostonzest.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00e54fc42bb8883401b7c934d86b970b-500wi\" title=\"IMG_5941\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>Pets Are Good for You<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Study after study confirms that having companion animals is good for your health. Certainly city dwellers with dogs seem more likely to enjoy the fitness benefits of daily exercise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20090207160114\/http:\/\/newsinhealth.nih.gov:80\/2009\/February\/feature1.htm\">The National Institutes of Health has funded studies<\/a> that showed people who walked their dogs \u201c&#8230; were more physically active and less likely to be obese than those who didn\u2019t own or walk a dog.\u201d For individuals age 71-82, \u201cThose who regularly walked their dogs walked faster and for longer time periods each week than others who didn\u2019t walk regularly. Older dog walkers also had greater mobility inside their homes than others in the study.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">&#0160; <a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/bostonzest.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00e54fc42bb8883401bb09d7fb1c970d-popup\" onclick=\"window.open( this.href, &#39;_blank&#39;, &#39;width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0&#39; ); return false\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_4352\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00e54fc42bb8883401bb09d7fb1c970d img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/bostonzest.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00e54fc42bb8883401bb09d7fb1c970d-500wi\" style=\"width: 500px;\" title=\"IMG_4352\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong style=\"line-height: 1.2em;\">Hea<\/strong><strong style=\"line-height: 1.2em;\">rt Health<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Stroking a cat or dog has been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and increase a feeling of calm. The American Heart Association issued a scientific statement about pet ownership and cardiac risk this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.heart.org\/HEARTORG\/HealthyLiving\/Owning-a-Pet-May-Protect-You-from-Heart-Disease_UCM_453586_Article.jsp#.Wg7ysCPys18\">They reported that<\/a>, \u201cOwning pets is associated with reducing your risk of heart disease, and there are a variety of reasons that may be at work that influence this relationship. It may be that healthier people are more likely to be pet owners or that people with dogs tend to exercise more. Pets also play a role in providing social support to their owners, which is an important factor in helping you stick with a new habit or adopting a new healthy behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>Mental Health<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Other researchers are looking at the benefits of pets or exposure to therapy dogs for disorders like depression, post traumatic stress disorder, and bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Caring for an animal keeps people active and can help prevent someone from becoming withdrawn. Dogs have an amazing sense of smell \u2013 <span class=\"s1\">1,000 to 100,000 times more sensitive than ours<\/span>. Medical detection dogs are now used to alert doctors to human conditions from hypoglycemia in diabetics to skin, bladder, and ovarian cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Some of these canines work with professionals in medical research settings, others are trained to alert their person to spikes and drops in blood sugar levels in diabetes, or to protect and try to get help for someone with a seizure disorder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">You\u2019ll also see service dogs who act as guides and helpers for people who are blind, deaf, confined to a wheelchair, or unsteady on their feet. They help law enforcement officers track criminals, locate drugs, guns, contraband, and bombs. They work protecting livestock on farms and offering comfort to victims in courtrooms and in the aftermath of a crime or disaster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Yes, these same creatures can be a source of stress when they misbehave or are ailing themselves.
