Boston Area Winter Farmers Market Schedule: Our Updated Resource Page for 2017-2018 Season

The open air farmers market season is nearly over and it's time for us to start our list of the 2017-2018 Winter Farmers Markets in the Boston area. We'll add to this list as we discover more markets opening. And, if you bookmark this page, we'll keep it updated for future years as we hear of new dates and openings.

We have updated all the markets listed below for 2017-2018.

Boston Public Market

The Boston Public Market is open 7 days a week. Here you’ll find: farmers, craft brewers, cheesemakers, local meat, and Red's Best (an outstanding seafood vendor), bakeries, and artisan food producers.

Located at 100 Hanover Street, Boston, MA 02108.

Hours: Monday – Saturday, 8am — 8pm, Sunday 10am — 8pm

What’s Happening Around Boston in Summer 2015 (July & August)

July and August are the high summer season in Boston. Most schedules for the many, many series of concerts, free movies, etc, cover both months. So we're combining them into one post that we'll feature for the next couple of months.

As usual, Penny has started a conversation about the summer over on the Boston Trip Advisor forum. Events and Holidays in July and August

This year, July 4th falls on a Saturday. According to the official holiday information on the Secretary of State's website, this will not be a three day weekend because, "All holidays falling on Sunday must be observed on Monday, under state law. Saturday holidays are observed on Saturday."

The city of Boston is taking a different approach. The holiday page on the city website reads:

Friday July 3rd Independence Day- City Holiday

"City offices closed. Sunday parking rules in effect. BCYF Community Centers are closed. The Mirabella and Clougherty Pools will be open regular hours. Please Note: All Boston Public Libraries will be open on July 3rd."

July 4th Boston Pops Concert and Fireworks

Since some visitors and perhaps some new Bostonians are unclear on the location of our famous July 4th Boston Pops Concert and Fireworks display, it is on the Charles River NOT on the harbor and can be viewed from both the Boston and Cambridge sides of the river. Conventions

There are only three large conventions that might raise hotel prices and make popular restaurant reservations necessary. They are all out in the Seaport, so they will have less impact on the locals and tourist areas than they might if they were in the heart of the city.

Summer Food Traditions

Our summer food tradition is to treat ourselves to fried clams, steamers, and lobster rolls. We like our steamers small and our fried clams the big belly versions not strips. Or, we can be just as happy with a lobster feast like the one above from Wood's Seafood in Plymouth.

We are dedicated to the no mayo version lobster roll with hot butter and a squeeze of lemon. We're looking forward to the opening of Luke's Lobster on Exeter Street near the Boston Public Library in July as a great source of properly made Maine Lobster Rolls. At The Market: Central Square Cambridge Market Visit

With the Central Square Farmers' Market (Mondays, Noon to 6 pm, map to the location), we combine errands and fun. We can buy fresh, local food at the market and ethnic food elsewhere in the square. We also see some of the area's finest chef's shopping at this location.

We are also big fans of Hi-Rise Bread Company. Their presence at this market saves a trip across the city to their Concord Avenue or Harvard Square locations.

Friends shopping with us indulged in a tasting of a full range of maple syrup grades from Nutting Farm and bought a jar of maple cream. That cream has also made a hit with Ed's sweet tooth.

Hutchins Farm is certified organic and had lettuce on their stand that looked like a work of art.

Parker Farm is proud to give shoppers the details of their growing practices. They had a nice selection of greens including Asian favorites like: pea tendrils, bok choy, and pac choy.

These turnips from Parker Farm make a great raw addition to seasonal salads.

More bread (Ed's favorite farmers' market shopping) was available from Hearth Artisan Bread from Plymouth.

Tomorrow we'll tell you about our the lobster roll supper we had with lobster from Chis Manning from C & C Lobster & Fish.

Make sure you stop by the manager's tent and say hello to Market Manager Peter Ward. He's always on top of what's in the market, what's coming up next, and what you should get before it's gone for the season.

Sunday Dog, Ruby – Just Call Her “Perfect”

Say Hello to Ruby – or as we like to call her, Perfect! This extraordinary 4 ½ year old was rescued a year ago from California via Petfinder and now calls the Bay State home. Ruby spends her time in Boston and Plymouth where she gets to walk wooded trails and play with lots of other neighborhood dogs.

Perfect … uh, Ruby has a great disposition and has been this way since “day one.” Her people have been amazed saying, “She’s the easiest dog I have [ever had.]” And, “I’ve never seen anything like this dog!”

There’s no doubt that this little heart-stealer is very devoted to the guy in her life, “No matter where Ruby is in the house, she keeps her eyes on him at all times.”

Ruby is also quite clever. After repeatedly being put inside a very comfortable, designer crate to keep her safe and out of trouble when the family stepped out for awhile, she would always be standing outside the crate when they returned.

A perfect dog often gets kissed which explains the red lipstick above Ruby’s Right Eye.

Finally, making certain the crate door was secured, they pretended to leave but secretly watched from outside her room and saw Ruby using her nose, paw, and tongue to unlatch the crate and escape! (Sounds like she crate-trained her family)

When she wants to go to sleep for the night, Ruby will stand and stare at her people until they get the hint, then it’s onto their bed.

From day-one Ruby, “never wet in the house, never did anything wrong, and never chewed anything.” Now that’s a “perfect” dog!

Wood’s Seafood, Plymouth, MA for Lobster & More

Driving back to Boston from Provincetown, we have a tradition of stopping in Plymouth for lunch. Wood's Seafood on the town pier is the perfect place to enjoy one last lobster and seafood feast.

The good folks at Woods seem to have the old fashioned notion that being nice to customers while serving fresh, simple, well-prepared local food at a good price, is the way to go. This table full of lobster, steamers, chowder, and sides cost just over $30. A great value in this tourist town on a busy holiday weekend.

Hearing the banter with the staff, we've figured out that this is where locals seem to come when they have guests, for take out, and to buy fish for supper in the adjacent fish market. As our former favorites in the Town Pier cluster take on a plastic, Disneyesque atmosphere, and are not as good a value, Wood's is our go-to spot.

The dining area is tiny, just 50 seats, so you may want to have an alternative spot for feasting in mind or be prepared to wait for a table. The guys above took their food outside to the pier and used the concrete barrier for a table.

When we don't dine in, we prefer to picnic in the park just north the breakwater you see on the map for Wood's in our details. If you park in the big lot that leads to the breakwater, you can be halfway between Wood's and al fresco dining. After years of traveling with dogs, we are skilled at finding places were we can enjoy a meal without leaving a friend locked in a hot car.

This can also make a great daytrip destination. If you have vistors who want to see Plymouth, you'll know the great place for a lobster, clam plate, or other seafood shack meal.
