  • Okay, What Is an “Apportioned” License Plate?

    We spotted this license plate this summer? Have you ever seen an "Apportioned Plate?"

    All the way home we made up scenarios for what we thought it might be. Was it a vehicle for personal use part-time and commercial use others? We remembered that Rhode Island had a plate like that called a suburban plate.

    When we got back, we looked up Apportioned Plate and learned that it's part of an International Registration Plan. It can be used for fleets of vehicles that are used in two countries, like the United States and Canada. New Hampshire explains it here.

  • Loving that Landaff Cheese: Welsh Style Flavor from New Hampshire

    You know how we love to discover a local cheese that is in wonderful condition at a local store.

    Landaff

    We've recently enjoyed a piece of Landaff Cheese produced at Landaff Creamery in Landaff, New Hampshire and aged at The Cellars at Jasper Hill in Greensboro, Vermont.

    The Cheesemaker says:

    "Made from our own high quality raw cow's milk, Landaff Cheese is a mild, semi-firm cheese with a delicious combination of flavors, tangy with a clean finish. The open and buttery texture comes with a natural, cave-aged rind. It melts beautifully for cooking, and makes a wonderful addition to any cheese plate."

    The experts at Murray's Cheese say:

    "Taking a cue from the Welsh history of New Hampshire, cheesemaker Doug Erb has based his Landaff on Caerphilly. The Erbs' herd of registered Holsteins is renowned for milk quality, another reason to leave the milk unpasteurized; that, and Doug spent two years training before bringing this cheese to market."

    We say:

    "We'll add Landaff to our cheese order often when we find it at our local shops. Many times, we prefer sheep and goat cheeses to cows milk, but this is one that has won our hearts."

  • Sunday Dog, Solie – Super Squirrel Hunter!

    Looking into her eyes, you probably can’t tell that Solie is a super squirrel hunter. There’s a certain cool, calm, confident quality about her gaze. After all, this is not an ability developed overnight. It comes from years of real-world experience born out of deep concentration.

    This 4 ½ year old from New Hampshire has mastered the art of visualization. She remains in this state until she senses the presence of a her favorite little rodent. At that critical moment (known only to Solie) her eyes suddenly point skyward.

    Amazing accuracy! She’s spotted a furry tail and now must wait, but not for long!

    As you can see, Solie is quite the athlete and very strong. When the snow piles up, her people told us they hang-on while she actually takes them on a “Nantucket Sleigh Ride.”

    “She’s not a dog that trots quietly by you through the park. You have to have space for her.”

    “She makes people laugh. She makes people happy,” they said, “She’s a comical, harlequin kind of goofy dog.” And she’s, “very intuitive. If you just think about giving her a bath, she starts slinking away.”

    “She can do it all– she can climb, she can hike, she cuddles, swims, hunts…pretty much a very versatile sort of dog.”

    Thanks for being our Sunday Dog, Solie. You are truly “super” in many ways!
