  • At The Market: Central Boston Farmers’ Markets Closing Dates

    DSC_8027 - Version 22013-09-03-artistan-food-farmers-markets-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Every year, I’m surprised when I see fewer shoppers at area farmers’ markets after Labor Day. Many farmers’ markets run well into autumn, with a few open until Thanksgiving. So, make time in your week to support these good people who bring fresh food to the city.

  • The Sixth Annual Strawberry Dessert Festival

Today, we turn over the BostonZest keyboard to Allison Dagger from Mass Farmers Markets so she can tell you about this year's Strawberry Dessert Festival. Take it away Allison!

Mass Farmers Markets is pleased to announce the 6th Annual Strawberry Dessert Festival – beginning Friday, June 7, 2013 through Sunday, July 7, 2013 at eateries throughout Massachusetts. Chefs and bakers at each establishment will use fresh strawberries to create strawberry dessert masterpieces not to be missed! Each eatery will donate a percentage of their sales for the dessert to Mass Farmers Markets’ (MFM) mission to promote healthy communities, healthy individuals, and healthy economies; demonstrating their commitment to local farmers markets.

Now in its sixth year, The Mass Farmers Markets Strawberry Dessert Festival was created in 2008 to highlight the local strawberry season while raising much-needed funds for Mass Farmers Markets’ mission as the only state-wide non-profit organization working to sustain and strengthen our farmers market system.

“Our Strawberry Dessert Festival is a great opportunity to support local farmers and farmers markets while enjoying the incredible taste of New England strawberries,” said Jeff Cole, Executive Director of Mass Farmers Markets (MFM). “I think this is a great way to support your local farmer beyond the farmers market!”

  • Farmers’ Markets Are Brimming with Goodness

Just when our farmers' markets are brimming with fresh, ripe, abundant products, some customers forget about them. It's as if Labor Day and the changes we make in our schedules after that holiday take them off our agenda.

    PMC_6243 - Version 22012-09-07-farmers-market-harvest-abundance-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

This abundant table at the Copley Market is just a hint of what's on offer.

We are here to tell you that that would be a big mistake. Some of the best fruit and vegetables of the year are showing up now at your local markets and farm stands. Right now, we're getting the best of the summer and the early fall crops.

We see lots of you clicking on our spring post with the weekly market schedule. As the markets begin to close for the season, we'll prepare an update. But remember, most markets are open into October. Some markets like Copley, Dewey Square, City Hall Plaza, and Central Square Cambridge are open until Thanksgiving week.

You can find the closing dates for your favorite market over at the MassFarmersMarkets site. Click on the Find tab, select "market" and enter your information in the boxes.

What's your favorite fall crop? We love winter squash and new potatoes! We make big trays of roasted, root vegetables and use them as an ingredient in hash, soup, and salads. Here's more about that trick!

  • Get Your Fresh, Local Strawberries While They Last

We heard the first warnings that strawberry season may be short this year from Barbara Hamilton of Hamiliton Orchards last Friday at the Copley Square Farmers' Market.

      IMG_5395 - Version 22012-06-19-strawberries-wooden-box-boston-farmers-market-© 2011 Penny Cherubino (1)

We were telling her how much we've been enjoying this year's crop of super sweet, juicy berries when she said that with the heat, hers may be gone soon. (But, her blueberries are almost ready and a few may show up this week.)

As you can see from the photo, these strawberries are totally ripe and very delicate. Penny carefully carried this container home because she wanted to photograph these plump, rosy jewels in their wooden cradle.

But, most of the time, we tuck our own covered containers into our market backpacks to protect delicate items like berries, ripe tomatoes, or delicate pastries. We pick out the container of berries we want and dump them into a sturdy, sealed bowl for the trip home.

We're also coming to the last week of the Mass Farmers' Market Association Strawberry Festival fund raising event. Choose a special strawberry dessert from a participating restaurant and they will donate to the group that helps our farmers and farmers' markets.

And, speaking of farms, here's a link to find the MassGrown map where you can search for places to pick your own berries.
