  • No Fooling! An 8% Sparkler to Toast April, Domaine Lingot Martin Bugey-Cerdon

    On the back label of our bottle of Domaine Lingot Martin Bugey-Cerdon is the great news that it has 8% alcohol by volume (ABV). We like low alcohol wines and can't wait to taste this one. It's supposed to be less dry than our usual choices, but we know that we have readers who like a fruitier wine, so why not include a few in our choices.PAR2837-2013-new-COLLAGE

    Here are a few images from the vineyard. You may find this wine with a different label than the one we have.

    In a recent feature about this wine region, Eater wrote, "According to French law, this sparkler must be made by the méthode ancestrale, an old process for producing bubbly wine that predates that of the Champenoise. With low alcohol (around 8 percent), a hint of sweetness, and fresh minerality, this festive drink goes down incredibly (dangerously?) easy. There is no better wine with breakfast (think pastries!), and it makes a refreshing accompaniment to dessert. Even better—it won’t break the bank. Most bottles retail around $20."

    Our bottle has a bright pink label but it does contain all the information you would need to find this wine or have your favorite shop order it for you.

    Here's a wine tip from us. Turn the bottle around and get to know that back label. We always check the ABV when buying wine because we want to reward those who use restraint and produce lower alcohol wines by choosing their products.

    When you like a wine and want to find it again, photograph the back label as well as the front. That back label will tell your wine merchant what importer to contact to buy it. We picked up ours at City Liquors, 620 Cambridge St., Cambridge, MA. Price Range: $15 to $20.

  • On Vacation with Mas de Daumas Gassac Rosé Frizant

    While on a late summer vacation in Provincetown, we were introduced to an amazing bottle of wine – Mas de Daumas Gassac Rosé Frizant. Ptown is a perfect place to search out a special sparkler, especially one that further enhances the feeling of being in such a beautiful place (no small task).

    On one of our walks through town, we stopped into a wine shop hoping to uncover a gem. We picked up what looked like an interesting bottle and heard, "It's my favorite wine in the store, right now!" It was Jerry, official wine geek at Glass Half Full on Commercial Street in Provincetown, and we soon learned that he has very good taste!

    Realizing we'd found a sparkling wine with a singular taste (90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Manseng), we had to share a taste with our vacationing neighbors. They were so impressed that everyone planned on buying some the next day. The best comment was from the woman who put down her just emptied glass and simply said, "Lovely."

    The winemaker says, “A genuine rosé wine … with lively fine bubbles … smooth fruity aromas … ideal apéritif, delightful with desserts … very fresh thanks to its low alcohol content.” (11 % by Vol.)

    Ellis Wharton Wines calls this rosé, "A pretty, sparkling, and uplifting pink … less intense fruit from young vines."
