The informal lost and found department for Bostonians does seem to be the fences of the city. What can we tell you? These two really don't belong together, and they would appreciate any help at all in finding their real mates.
But there are other ways. We've noticed that some readers are looking at lost and found in Boston posts that we did back in 2008. Many of the links we used there are now moved or gone. So here's an update:

Boston Police
You can turn-in a found item at any Police station. Here's a link to the area stations.
And, here's the rule regarding when you might claim an item you found.
"Sec. 21 Disposition of Property by the Department Property Clerk: The Department Property Clerk shall be guided by the provisions of the General Laws, Chapters No. 134 and 135, when disposing of property in his possession. All officers should be aware that pursuant to Chapter 134 of the G.L., certain found property may be claimed by the finder after one year if the owner has not claimed it."
