  • Eventide Fenway, Our First Look

Last week we made our first visit to the new Eventide location in the Fenway.

    IMG_5186

First and foremost let us say that the food was fabulous. We had the brown butter lobster roll, the burger, and the lobster stew along with some well-matched wine.

    IMG_4315

The brown butter lobster roll on a steamed bun is the dish that had the most pre-opening excitement. It adds one more option to our Boston lobster roll scene. It's smaller than some local options and doesn't include any sides, but that's fine because we knew it was a serving that would enable us to taste some other items like …

    Copy IMG_4316 (1)

… the fabulous Maine lobster stew with coconut, carrots, curry, maitake mushrooms, and of course lobster! This was the absolute hit of the day. Penny says she can see herself walking over there just to get a bowl of this flavor bomb. It was served with some pieces of crisp, crunchy flatbread which we used as a palate cleanser to keep our taste buds ready for the next sip of that delicious broth.

    IMG_4318

Ed's order of the burger was a surprise. He's a fussy burger eater and seldom orders one in all but his favorite spots around town. Let's say he took one for the team! That said, he ate every bite and was impressed that, like many thin patties, it was not cooked to death. It had good beef flavor and he liked the roll. He might not order it again, but if we have a friend who is not a fish lover, we're very happy that this option is available.

    IMG_5176

Adult beverages here are wine and beer. The wine selection is well matched to the food and shows that some serious thought was put into it. Penny ordered a Manzanilla Sherry that we both agreed paired well with both the lobster roll and the lobster stew. Ed had a rosé with his burger. And while the servingware was not glass, these Govino flutes were interesting enough for us to look them up and consider buying them in quantity for an upcoming Irish whiskey tasting.

Oddly we never took a single photo of the place, probably because it didn't appeal to us at all. This food is so good it deserves a much warmer and more hospitable atmosphere. Our hope is that should this team decide to open a second Boston location, it'll be designed for those who would like to enjoy a comfortable sit down meal with friends.

We don't mind the counter service set up. If we had a comfortable table where our group could sit and spend time savoring the flavors that this food offers, we'd be back often. We would gladly go to the counter for second or third rounds of oysters, drinks, more lobster stew, or to add dessert, but we'd like to feel we're in a restaurant, not a cold, hard, clamorous, unwelcoming, fast food joint.

Our plan for a second visit is to order the food to go, (if they do take out) and walk down Jersey Street to the Fens and enjoy it as a picnic.

  • Dog Day Out in Boston

Time to plan a day out in the city. You can do this with friends if you normally walk with a group or you can make arrangements with another dog family to run errands together.

Why not plan a long amble with a group of dogs and their people. Pick a day, destination, a place for the people to grab lunch, spots for a few breaks for those who need them, and you're on your way.

    6a00e54fc42bb88834017c3265e949970b-800wi

    The Greenway …

… has become one of our favorite summertime destinations. Yes it can use more shade and seating, but it has a lot of advantages for a dog day out. There are nice wide walkways that are supposed to be free of bikes and skateboards. It has food trucks and nearby restrooms for the humans in the pack. It offers great people watching.

    6a00e54fc42bb88834016761615966970b-800wi

    The Esplanade …

… is a great destination for a doggie afternoon or evening. You do have to walk with care to avoid the bikers and skaters who leave the bike path to speed by on the pedestrian paths. Still, there are plenty of benches and open space to spread a blanket and relax once the dogs have walked enough to be tired. And the Hatch Shell has regular concerts and other entertainment events that are dog-friendly. (Note that the July 4th concerts prohibit dogs in the secured areas.)

    Unspecified-1

    The Boston Harborwalk …

… is another perfect destination for your dog day outing. You can jump on-and-off from many spots along the way from parks in the North End to Caste Hill in Dorchester. You can find all the details on where you can go and what you can do at the new website www.bostonharbornow.org that represents the merger of The Boston Harbor Association and the Boston Harbor Island Alliance.

      6a00e54fc42bb8883401a73dee3fce970d-800wi

Summertime promises a full schedule of activities to enjoy along this walking path. Consider a stop at James Hook & Company for a lobster roll that you can take to one of the tables in front of the Intercontinental Hotel for a dog-friendly dining experience.

Over the years, we have come to appreciate the advantages of having a canine ambassador on the end of a leash. You meet more people and become more engaged in the local community. Visitors to Boston often stop to visit with Poppy and give us the opportunity to answer any questions they might have about our city.

You get more exercise and explore more aspects of a neighborhood when you share it with a dog. And you become more creative at solving the small problems that come from being in a world that is not as dog-friendly as you would like it to be.

  • Daytrip to the Lobster Pool in Rockport, MA

June was a great month for us. We took a lot of time off to play tourist in our own area. One of the things we did was take a daytrip for lobster rolls at the Lobster Pool in Rockport, MA. (map)

    PC2_3681 - Version 22014-06-18- lobster-pool-gloucester-ma-lobster-roll-beans-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Yes, those are baked beans in the cup on the side. The folks at the Lobster Pool believe in giving you choices. They were happy to make our lobster rolls with just lobster and melted butter, but they do offer a lobster salad version if you're a mayo fan. And, you can have a side of fries, onion rings, baked beans, and other choices with your sandwich.

    PC2_3671 - Version 22014-06-18- lobster-pool-gloucester-ma-lobster-roll-fries-butter-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

We did get some fries but the onion rings at the next picnic table where getting rave reviews, so we'll opt for those next time.

    PC2_3678 - Version 22014-06-18- lobster-pool-gloucester-ma-clam-chowder-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

We added a cup of clam chowder to our lunch – they do a very nice version with an abundance of clams and not too thick broth.

    PC2_3665 - Version 22014-06-18- lobster-pool-gloucester-ma-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Often, when a dining spot offers spectacular views like the one above, you don't get the high quality food that the folks at the Lobster Pool are proud to serve. Everything is freshly caught, freshly prepared, and plentiful.

    PC2_3661 - Version 22014-06-18- lobster-pool-gloucester-ma-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

What's more, they even announce on their website that they are dog friendly at their outdoor picnic tables. We brought Poppy along and she enjoyed meeting the nice people at the next table and had a picnic of her own when we finished our lunch.

The next time you're looking for a destination out of the city, point your GPS to the Lobster Pool and relax with a great meal by the rocky shore.

And, if you want to make a full day of this adventure, explore Halibut Point State Park. It's just a half mile away and offers its own spectacular views!

  • Row 34 Restaurant: Our First Look

We paid our first visit to Row 34 in the Fort Point neighborhood as a part of our current "staycation." Our lunch last week was a hit with both of us.

    IMG_0230 - Version 22014-02-25-row 34-oyster-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

That lovely oyster is one of the Row 34s from Island Creek Oyster Farm that gave the name to this place. The restaurant is from the same group that made Kenmore Square a dining destination with Island Creek Oyster Bar, Eastern Standard, and The Hawthorne.

    IMG_0148 - Version 22014-02-25-row 34-beer-cask-Tröegs-Nugget-Nectar-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

In doing my pre-visit menu research, I spotted cask beer on the menu. One of our first questions was to ask what was in the cask that day. Our fabulous bartender had one of those "I'm gonna make you very happy" smiles on his face as he told us he had just finished preparing a new cask and could offer Ed a taste of Tröegs Nugget Nectar, a hoppy imperial amber ale.

    IMG_0151 - Version 22014-02-25-row 34-beer-cask-Tröegs-Nugget-Nectar-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

One sip from the tasting portion put a smile on Ed's face that was still there when we returned home. Apparently, this is a seasonal product not usually available on draft but since Row 34 has their own system, they were able to send their container to the brewery and have it filled.

We're pretty sure the supply at Row 34 must be gone by now but something else will be coming from that special tap. We later picked up the bottled version at Bauer Wine & Spirits. This has limited availability so grab some now if it tempts you.

Ed thinks, "Nugget Nectar is the perfect name, no exaggeration."

    IMG_0260 - Version 22014-02-2524-taps-row-34-© 2011 Penny Cherubino IMG_0220 - Version 22014-02-25-row 34-oyster-bar© 2011 Penny Cherubino
    IMG_0167 - Version 22014-02-25-row 34-bar-decor-beer-sign-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

As a draft beer lover, he was also impressed with the number of taps and the selection offered. Our friend Howie Rubin from Bauer said to be sure to try the selections from Trillium Brewing Company. Their tasting room happens to be next door but he really enjoyed sampling the beer at Row 34.

    IMG_0154 - Version 22014-02-25-row 34-condiments-cava-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

I tried a lovely crisp cava from Pere Mata. And, I had a caddy of flavors to play with as the meal proceeded. (I think they should sell these caddies at both ICOB and Row 34. They would probably be expensive, but I think they'd make a delightful addition to any kitchen counter.)

    IMG_0179 - Version 22014-02-25-row 34-lobster-roll-chips-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Since I'm a warm buttery lobster roll lover, my order was easy. The usual cole slaw is missing from my order because I can't have mayo. Perhaps that led to an abundance of chips, both regular and sweet potato. Those were one of the lovely, "aren't these wonderful," side notes of the day. Between the two of us, not a chip crumb remained as our plates were removed.

The lobster was sweet and warm with just enough butter. The roll was so perfect I had to ask if they were making their own. I was told it was Iggy's. It was slightly larger than most hot dog rolls and took the grilling like a pro. Not too sweet and not at all gummy which are common lobster roll problems.

    IMG_0196 - Version 22014-02-25-row 34-lobster-roll-chips-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Ed was in an oyster mood and did rounds of Island Creeks and Row 34s. Down the center are three saucing options: traditional mignonette, a zingy cocktail sauce, and an Asian influenced version with chilies and cilantro.

Once more, deep knowledge on the part of our server gave us a detailed background on the growing of Island Creeks vs Row 34s. Island Creeks grow on the ocean floor while Row 34s are suspended in racks for the maturing process.

    IMG_0204 - Version 22014-02-25-row 34-island-creek-oysters© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Island Creeks (above) have long been Ed's favorite oyster. But, he was up for a taste test. "I tried a half dozen (3 and 3) and honestly couldn’t tell the difference," he said. "Never one to give up easily, I repeated the order hoping to detect any subtle variations. Same results … outstanding oysters … my kind of experiment."

    IMG_0174 - Version 22014-02-25-row 34-lobster-tacos-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

We also had the lobster tacos which were an old favorite of mine from Chef Jeremy Sewall's Brookline restaurant Lineage. Crisp housemade tacos contain a smear of avocado plus big pieces of cold lobster topped with a bright mango salsa.

And, yes, these do come three to an order but I was more interested in eating them than taking photos. Ed managed to get this shot while there were still two on the plate.

I scooped up the remaining salsa with the wonderful potato chips that came with my lobster roll.

    Dessert

    IMG_0257 - Version 22014-02-25-row 34-butterscotch-pudding-dessert=rice-crispies-© 2011 Penny Cherubino  IMG_0247 - Version 22014-02-25-row 34-candy-bar-dessert-peanuts-brittle-nougart-chocolate-peanuts-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

We finished with a butterscotch pudding – another old love from the time when Chef Sewall was at Great Bay which once resided in the space where Island Creek Oyster Bar is today. We also had a candy bar dessert that was our server's favorite. We took half of that home because we were both stuffed.

    Feeling At Home

In the car on the way home, we both had the same feeling about the hospitality at Row 34. I said, "There is something about walking into a new place and feeling at home within minutes." While Ed noted, "I expected the same service and quality as their Kenmore Square eateries and was not disappointed. I felt at home from the moment I stepped into the space."

We told our Uber driver to note the location because this was going to be a popular run from all around the area. (BTW, you can get a discount on your first Uber ride at this link and we'll be rewarded with a matching credit to our account.)

    IMG_0170 - Version 22014-02-25-row 34-menu-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Row 34 will go into our regular rotation despite the fact that we seldom find ourselves in that part of the city. As we said, this is a destination spot. We both look forward to outdoor seating should warm days ever return to Boston.

Row 34 will go into our regular rotation despite the fact that we seldom find ourselves in that part of the city. As we said, this is a destination spot. We both look forward to outdoor seating should warm days ever return to Boston.

  • Row 34 Restaurant: Our First Look

We paid our first visit to Row 34 in the Fort Point neighborhood as a part of our current "staycation." Our lunch last week was a hit with both of us.

That lovely oyster is one of the Row 34s from Island Creek Oyster Farm that gave the name to this place. The restaurant is from the same group that made Kenmore Square a dining destination with Island Creek Oyster Bar, Eastern Standard, and The Hawthorne.

As a draft beer lover, he was also impressed with the number of taps and the selection offered. Our friend Howie Rubin from Bauer said to be sure to try the selections from Trillium Brewing Company. Their tasting room happens to be next door but he really enjoyed sampling the beer at Row 34.

I tried a lovely crisp cava from Pere Mata. And, I had a caddy of flavors to play with as the meal proceeded. (I think they should sell these caddies at both ICOB and Row 34. They would probably be expensive, but I think they'd make a delightful addition to any kitchen counter.)

    Dessert

  • No Mayo Lobster Roll from James Hook & Company

    CHE_6668 - Version 22013-05-04-lobster-roll-no-mayo-james-hook-Boston-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

The lines at the Food Truck Throwdown today were way too long so we stopped by James Hook & Co. to grab a cup of chowder. I was looking longingly at the lobster rolls when one of the crew came up and asked if he could get something for me.

I said, "I'd love a lobster roll but I can't have mayo." He said, "Tell me how you'd like it and I'll make what you want." And, he did!

Ed and I each had a toasted bun filled with fresh, chilled lobster topped with just a drizzle of melted butter. Perfection!

This adds one more place where you can get a lobster roll without mayo. What you have is pure lobster pleasure. We'll continue the lobster roll hunt and keep reporting back to you.
