Tai Chi at MGH’s Benson-Henry Institute

This summer I've been taking tai chi training at MGH's Benson-Henry Institute. It is one more move forward in my healthy living program. Friends will tell you that I'm recommending Tai Chi, and especially this particular program, for anyone who has thought about exploring ways to reduce stress, improve balance, and strengthen their bodies.

Why Tai Chi?

My fascination with this form of mind/body exercise began years ago when I would walk in the Boston Public Garden and watch Asian men and women, young and old, practice this ancient art.

In September I added a morning walk to my daily routine. Most days the highlight of that walk is the time I spend in the Public Garden.

Each morning, in the warmer weather, this group of women gather at the Swan Boat landing and work out together.

Why the Benson-Henry Institute?

I've been a long, longtime follower of Herbert Benson, MD, and his research into mind body medicine. I took a Relaxation Response class with him many years ago and have kept up with his work at Harvard and MGH and read a number of his books and audio books.

When I decided to take tai chi training, I felt assured the staff there would be of the highest caliber and the training would be focused on goals that would fit my needs.

The next set of classes will not be scheduled until fall, but there are resources available online for meditation and to learn more about the other programs they offer.

I recommend that you contact them now by email and tell them what program you would like to join. I did and they let me know when registration opened for the classes.

Encore Presentation: Show Dog “Harvard” Insists He’s Just a Regular Guy

Bon Chon Chicken: Add a Favorite to the List

Our friend Mick was the first one to recommend Bon Chon chicken in Allston. With his descripiton, we added it to the "must try list." Then, praise for this spicy version of fried chicken began popping up over on Chowhound's Boston Board and Bon Chon moved to the top of our minds.

During a recent hot spell, we decided to try and make a Packard's Corner triple play. Lunch at Bon Chon, then a quick move to the Super 88 to resupply our Asian staples, and finally a slow stroll to Clear Flour to satisfy our bread lovers' souls. And, the Green Line home.

We began with a basic order: a bit of each style of chicken with sides of pickled radish, fries, rice, and coleslaw. We have since refined our orders, especially for take-out or delivery, to the chicken and radishes. The fries are very good if you're eating in, but they distract from the chicken and are not great take out.

Tiny bottles of a good cava were perfect with the chicken. Beer is highly recommended.

We should warn you that Bon Chon Chicken is an addictive substance. Two days after a visit to Allston, you'll find yourself ordering a big box of spicy hot wings and drumsticks delivered to your hungry hands!

It would also make perfect party food the next time you want to have friends over without the work. The folks at Bon Chon are ready for that with 5, 10, 20, 30, and 40 piece selections of wings or drumsticks all prepriced on their site.

A second franchise has opened in Harvard Square. We haven't tried this one yet, but we'll update when we do.

Don’t Wait for Lilac Sunday, Plan an Arboretum Visit This Week

Walking around the city last weekend, we noticed the scent of lilacs in the air. We enjoyed seeing some wonderful, old bushes at Titus Sparrow Park. And, a recent post by A Proper Bostonian also featured lilacs.

If you look forward to Lilac Sunday at the Arnold Arboretum each year, we suggest you schedule two visits this spring. One this week or weekend to see the lilacs, and one on May 13th to enjoy the events planned for Lilac Sunday– also the only day of the year when you can have a picnic at the Arboretum.
