  • Opening 2020 with Roses de Jeanne by Cedric Bouchard

We're celebrating a new decade with Roses de Jeanne Champagne from a groundbreaking winemaker. Cedric Bouchard has some unusual views on the wine he is making in the Champagne region. We've enjoyed his wines before. In fact, he has made our New Year's choice twice. We opened 2013 with his Inflorescence Blanc de Noirs.

We're looking forward to this bottle and have the glasses and decanter ready to fill. Yes, we did say decanter. Cedric Bouchard suggests decanting his Champagne, so we're eager to give it a try. Polaner Selections in writing about this wine added, "One serving note: While you can enjoy Bouchard's Champagnes like other Champagnes, he recommends gently decanting them and serving them in regular wine glasses instead of flutes." We totally agree with the large wine glasses and we will try decanting a portion of our bottle.

Polaner Selections also noted the importance of terroir to this winemaker, "Bouchard’s wines are characterized by uniquely soil-driven personalities, with the underlying terroir of each parcel jumping from the glass with a purity of expression that is extremely rare in Champagne. These are brilliant wines made from a young, perfectionist vigneron who is likely to completely revolutionize the landscape of Champagne before he writes the last chapter on his career."

With this wine leading the way, in 2020 we will toast each new month with sparkling wines from different places. It will be our "Year of Terroir!" Trying wines made with different grapes, and produced by different methods adds spice to our monthly ritual. Since 2007 we have raised a glass of sparkling wine to greet each new month!

We purchased our bottle at Federal Wine & Spirits.

  • Philipponnat Royale Réserve Brut Champagne with Great Stories for Toasting March 2019

Happy New Month! This time we are raising a glass of Philipponnat Royale Réserve Brut Champagne to salute the month of March.

    IMG_3149

Today we will also toast two wonderful gentlemen, Tom Fielding and Scott O’Connor, who provided us with fabulous wine selections at Perry's in Provincetown for years.

Here's to the two of you! We hope you'll have many happy years in your new home in San Miguel de Allende. This is the last bottle we have that was one of their selections. And what a selection it is! We can't wait to taste it.

    IMG_3162

    Philipponnat has its own story!

In case you didn't notice the 1522 in the top photo, we took a close up of it on the neck of the bottle. The Philipponnat family have been on this land for nearly 500 years. They provided wine to French King Louis 14th, other royals, magistrates and mayors, even to those in the Champagne region.

We have read that the current family member managing the vineyard is Charles Philipponnat who's responsible for bringing it back to greatness by paying close attention to details from vine to bottle.

    IMG_3160

No flutes for this wine. We'll be enjoying it in large wine glasses to capture every nuance of the blend.

    The winemakers say:

"The Blend: 65% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, 5% Pinot Meunier. First press juice of mainly Grand and Premier Crus grapes from the heart of the Champagne wine-growing area. 20 to 30% of reserve wines are aged in wooden barrels using the solera system to incorporate older wines without losing freshness."

    "TASTING

To the eye: Deep gold in colour with amber glints. Delicate froth, lively and lingering.

With the nose: The first nose reveals vine blossom, linden and fresh, lightly toasted bread. After breathing, aromas of summer berries, citrus fruit and honey develop.

With the mouth: Fine vinous attack on the palate, fruity (red currant, raspberry, ripe grape) and full- bodied, generous and long. Light notes of biscuit and freshly baked bread on the finish."

Tip: When you want to find a wine, take a photo of the back label. This gives you the information your wine shop will need to order it for you.

We purchased our bottle at Perry's in Provincetown ~$60.00

(03.01.19) 4p – Update: Be sure to drink this wine through the temperatures because it is spectacular at 55º in a large glass!

  • Toasting June with Summer Sparklers, Like Nino Franco, on the Beach

Join us as we lift a glass of a favorite sparkling wine to toast our new month of June 2016. We'll be toasting with an old favorite, Nino Franco Rustico.

    CHE_0501

This is a great summer wine and will add some fizzy fun to any day or any event. It is extremely food friendly, light in alcohol (11% ABV), and refreshing. This wine makes you understand why a glass of Prosecco is the start of so many meals in Italy. And it will make believers of people who have been put off my lesser quality, semi-dry Proseccos.

    CHE_0509

It is a wine to enjoy in any summer location or at home to remind you of days at that beachside getaway. (Frankly, remembering our recent stay in Provincetown is one of our reasons for choosing to begin June with a glass of Rustico.)

    CHE_0499

    Our Tips for Summer Sparklers!

    • Consider serving one wonderful sparkling wine at your next party. Living in a tiny home, the only wine glasses we own in quantity are flutes. When we entertain, we serve sparkling wine!
    • Summer heat calls for lower alcohol, check the labels to find crisp, refreshing sparklers under 12% ABV.
    • As you fill a bucket with bottles of fun fizz, add an equal number of bottles of sparkling water. As you walk around refilling glasses, offer your guests a choice of water or wine. If you drink one full glass of water for each glass of wine, you'll stay hydrated and cut calories.
    • You don't need a wine cork for most sparkling wines, but you can use a champagne stopper and a champagne chiller
    • Ask your wine merchant to guide you to sparkling wines made from different grape varieties and from countries and wine regions beyond the usual sources of Champagne, Prosecco, Cava, Cremant, etc.

    CHE_0560

Cin Cin to June! May your month be filled with good things. We plan to enjoy the quiet time in Boston and toast our life in the city, often, with a glass of bubbles.
