  • Where to Dine on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Around Boston 2017

    Where can you dine on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in the Boston area?

    There are a few great choices! But, if you're planning to dine at one of Boston's fine restaurants over the holidays, make a reservation! More than ever, family and friends are gathering in area restaurants on holidays like this, which means spots at your favorites may be gone if you wait too long.

    Don't be surprised if a deposit is required to hold your reservation or if there are special menus and seatings for these special holiday meals. Unfortunately, restaurants have been forced to do this because of people who make multiple reservations so they can decide at the last minute where to go. This leaves other diners without choices and the restaurants with empty tables.

    What's Open on Christmas Eve?

    There are more choices on Christmas Eve than on Christmas Day. Some of our favorite, special places have wonderful holiday meals planned for those who reserve for the 24th.

    At the early date of this posting, some places have not announced their traditional Feast of the Seven Fishes events for Christmas Eve. Check back or follow us on Twitter for updates on this fun, holiday dining option. 

    • Coppa Enoteca is one of our favorites and is offering their version of this tradition.
    • Dante in Cambridge will present Chef Dante de Magistris' version of the feast with other menu items available.
    • Grotto was one of the first to present this holiday tradition. They tell us that it will be a nightly special every night in December! 

    Which Boston Area Restaurants Are Open on Christmas?

    Hotel restaurants, since they must serve the hotel's guests, are normally open on holidays.

    In Boston, hotel restaurants open both the 24th and 25th.

    • The Bristol at the Four Seasons Hotel
    • Meritage at the Boston Harbor Hotel 
    • Eastern Standard: They will normally open Christmas Day for breakfast and then for a special 3-course prix fixe meal. 

    Other places open on holidays would include chain restaurants and some places in Chinatown. We once asked a longtime Boston cabbie where we could get something we needed on Christmas, and he said Chinatown was the place to go.

    As we included above, the reservation site Open Table has a feature list of its member restaurants with Christmas Eve Specials and Christmas Day Dining. 

    But you can also input information on the reservation you want on Open Table and come up with a list of restaurants open at that hour. Change the hour and the list will change and some are not on the featured lists. It's a good place to start.

    The Boston Chefs site has posted a list of its participating member restaurants with special features for the holidays. Here's the Christmas Eve List & the Christmas Day list.

  • Townsman for the Win at Lunch

    We love going out to lunch and have added Townsman to our list of great lunch spots. (map)

    We admit to having a soft spot for alumni from Rhode Island where we first met Chef Matt Jennings at his cheese shop, Farmstead, when we were in Providence visiting family. He introduced us to a favorite cheese for which we have been grateful over the years.

    Now he's joined the Boston scene and is serving up great lunchtime options like this outstanding Vermont Pork Cubano with light, airy, housemade chips, and tangy bread & butter pickles. Ed is a Cubano fan and this one made him very happy.

    Maine mussels with herbed cottage fries was Penny's choice. If you order this, it will come with a bit of aioli (not shown above, since they honored her request to avoid the raw egg in that addition). Happily, she dipped her frites in the rosé sauce.

    We would have skipped dessert but our bartender sensed our hesitation and let us know that at lunch the desserts are smaller than the evening selections. Three wee ice cream sandwiches were the perfect conclusion to our meal.

    This is a bright, sunny room with comfortable bar seating in addition to indoor and outdoor dining areas.

    If you find yourself in the Financial District, the Greenway near South Station, or Downtown, add Townsman to your list of places to lunch.

  • Then & Now: Snow Shoveling in Boston

    With the first storm of the current series, Ed took this photo of a team of men clearing a sidewalk in the Back Bay. Those signs should read "Don't Stop!"– shoveling that is.

    It made me remember some photos I once saw in the Boston Public Library's Leslie Jones Collection.

    This one is titled Men shoveling snow into trucks. It's from 1939 and shows a much larger team of shovelers who seem to be clearing both the street and the sidewalk on Tremont Street across from the Boston Common.

    Some horses were added to this team in February of 1936. Jones titled this Workmen shovel snow.

    Downtown, Summer St., coffee break is a good reminder for everyone out there working in the cold and exerting themselves in the storm. Take it easy, take some breaks, get inside, warm up, and don't do more than you are able. Those shovels look heavy. (1934 – 1956 approximate)

    Be a Good Neighbor!

    Over on Universal Hub, one of the UH crew posted information and links to an organized effort for neighbors to help neighbors. Lend a hand to those who are not able to shovel. 

    And, if you are fortunate and don't have to shovel out your home, consider adopting a hydrant or catch basin to make you and your neighbors safer in case of fire or local flooding.

This year Kitchen will be open offering the regular menu for those who prefer an al la carte choice. At Grotto and Marliave will continue the feasting on fish.

    • Meritage at the Boston Harbor Hotel gives you a choice of a Christmas Day Buffet Brunch in the Atlantic Room from 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., or their 4-course prix-fixe dinner in Meritage Restaurant from 5-9 p.m.
    • Brasserie JO at the Colonnade Hotel

  • Rumanian Pastrami from Sam LaGrassa’s

    Walking back from City Hall on Friday afternoon, I was considering my options for a lunch to take home. Sam LaGrassa's came to mind. So often when I'm craving a great sandwich from this legendary downtown lunch spot, they're close. So, the first lesson in getting your hands on a great pastrami sandwich is to go at the right time.

    Sam LaGrassa's is open Monday through Friday from 11:00 am to 3:30 pm. Etch that fact into your mind so you will take the opportunity to indulge whenever you're in their area during those golden hours.

    I'm usually a corned beef lover, but the crew over at Boston Chowhound has consistantly named the pastrami at this place among the best in town. And, I remembered seeing it made on a food show. So this time I grabbed one corned beef and one pastrami to take home and share with Ed.

    Moving in for a close up!

    After posing for a quick photo shoot, the pastrami sandwich was ready for my first bite. It was instant regret. Why didn't I buy two pastramis? I mean, I like their corned beef but with this pastrami, it was love at first bite.

    It is soft, melting, spicy, and full-bodied all at the same time. It's a Cote du Rhone of the sandwich world.

    P.S. The pickles are so good, that I don't get to have Ed's share. He likes these!
