  • We’ll Raise a Glass of Guidobono Extra Brut Segretevigne to Toast October

Later today we will get together with some of our favorite people and raise a glass of Guidobono Extra Brut Segretevigne. Trying wines from different places, made with different grapes, and produced by different methods adds spice to our monthly ritual. This Italian sparkler from Piemonte is made with 100% Nebbiolo grapes. This happens to be one of Ed's favorite varietals.

    IMG_0254

Here's what we have learned about Guidobono Extra Brut Segretevigne

    • A retailer writes, "100% Nebbiolo (the name means secret vines because the wine laws in Italy for now do not allow for the name of the varietal to appear on the label for sparkling wines vinified with classic champenois method). Early harvest, 36 month on the yeasts, zero dosage. Bone dry, but rich and zesty. Fine mousse and long finish."

    • The importer notes, "Guidobono is the creation of the Faccenda family, and reflects their obsession with terroir. They make a range of wines from the Roero and Langhe hills, all of them outstanding value. Their vineyards are scattered through the area, with Castellinaldo in the Roero and Monforte in Barolo being particularly prized. The family has a knack of outperforming in almost every vintage."

    • One CellarTracker member – RICHARDP wrote: 90 Points
"This is something unique: A sparkling white Nebbiolo. Yeast on the nose; on the palate, yellow apple cider and notes of flowers, yeast, and minerals on the medium finish, with strong acidity and a fine bubble. It would be interesting to put this up against a bottle of cheap Champagne to compare and contrast; this is better than most Champagnes at the same price point. Good value for a bit under $30."

We found our bottle at City Liquors in Cambridge.

    What's your favorite sparkler?

One of our favorite assignments is finding a sparkling wine to toast the upcoming month. We have a few favorite places to look for sparklers that we have not tried before and reliable retailers we count on to know what we like, especially grower Champagnes and biodynamic bubbles. But, we are always open to suggestions. Do you have a favorite sparkling wine to suggest? Let us know in the comments below!

    IMG_0437

UPDATE: (10.01.17) While Ed’s fondness for the full, rich body and substantial fruit of a Nebbiolo influenced our choice of Guidobono Extra Brut Segretevigne, we didn’t expect this white, sparkling version of the varietal to be quite so un-Nebbiolo like.

We think the review above is most accurate, describing this wine as “Bone dry, but rich and zesty,” with a “fine mousse and long finish."

It’s a good sparkler for our friends who like extremely dry, Blanc de Blancs. If that’s you, drink it chilled to around 55º F. If you prefer a fuller-bodied wine, let it warm into the 60s.

We found Guidobono Extra Brut Segretevigne to be a particularly good match with our Vietnamese lemongrass chicken Saigon salad – a big pop of flavor followed by a sip of wine to cleanse the palate … a nice balance.

And, most importantly, guard against pre-judging this impressive sparkler. Take your time and enjoy!

  • September’s Toast with Champagne Robert Barbichon Blanc De Noirs

This month we are chilling a bottle of Robert Barbichon Blanc De Noirs. It's an organic, biodynamic, grower Champagne from a small producer. You may have noticed that we toast with a lot of wines similar to this one. Like many of you, there are flavor profiles, business philosophies, importers, and regional terroirs that we prefer over others. This wine checks a lot of boxes on our preference list.

    IMG_3047 copy

Humboldt Importers describe this wine maker well, "Located in the Cote des Bar in the Aube region to the southeast of the Marne, the Barbichon family have been growing Champagne grapes for 4 generations. Today Robert Barbichon produces a range of elegant, stylish Champagnes with bright mineral-driven fruit and just a hint of toast."

And (here's the part we especially like) Humboldt Importers characterize the Blanc de Noirs Brut NV as, "Crafted of pure Pinot Noir, it exhibits a creamy nose filled with bright white fruit, chalk/mineral notes and a crisp, elegant finish. 100% Pinot Noir from the Cote des Bar."

One of the fun things about this bottle is that it's a "Transatlantic Bubbles Selection." This is a new import category to us. But reading about their love of sparkling wine and the places where their selections are served makes us open to other wines from their portfolio.

    They say:

"Transatlantic Bubbles LLC. specializes in finding and importing grower-producer Champagnes that offer superior quality at a better cost to the customer. We are a trusted supplier in the growing niche market for recoltant-manipulant Champagne."

We're looking forward to raising our glasses to the extension of this lovely summer that we have declared, "… will not end until October 15th, at the earliest!"

We purchased our bottle of Champagne Robert Barbichon Blanc De Noirs Brut at City Liquors in Cambridge for ~ $45.

IMG_4250UPDATE: (09.02.17) We had such high hopes for this Champagne and, well … at the risk of stooping to a cliché, "It exceeded our highest expectations!" We chilled the wine to ~ 55ºF and began tasting while enjoying some thinly sliced pork loin, pepper-flavored boursin, Jasper Hill Moses Sleeper (cows milk cheese inspired by French Brie), figs, and local cherry tomatoes – why skimp?

This combination added to the enjoyment of the Barbichon Blanc De Noirs Brut which only improved as it warmed.

Penny was haunted by a flavor she was experiencing tasted in the fruit of this wine. Then she realized it was like the charred, caramelized pineapple served with our Jamaican jerk chicken wings plate at Little Donkey. I liked the wine's yeasty character and hints of chalk.

We both agreed that the full, rich, round, "elegant finish" remained throughout our meal. And, the best news, we saved some more of this lovely bottle of bubbles for today.

We are buying another bottle the next time we find this little gem!

    Cheers!

  • No Fooling! An 8% Sparkler to Toast April, Domaine Lingot Martin Bugey-Cerdon

On the back label of our bottle of Domaine Lingot Martin Bugey-Cerdon is the great news that it has 8% alcohol by volume (ABV). We like low alcohol wines and can't wait to taste this one. It's supposed to be less dry than our usual choices, but we know that we have readers who like a fruitier wine, so why not include a few in our choices.PAR2837-2013-new-COLLAGE

Here are a few images from the vineyard. You may find this wine with a different label than the one we have.

In a recent feature about this wine region, Eater wrote, "According to French law, this sparkler must be made by the méthode ancestrale, an old process for producing bubbly wine that predates that of the Champenoise. With low alcohol (around 8 percent), a hint of sweetness, and fresh minerality, this festive drink goes down incredibly (dangerously?) easy. There is no better wine with breakfast (think pastries!), and it makes a refreshing accompaniment to dessert. Even better—it won’t break the bank. Most bottles retail around $20."

    IMG_7677

Our bottle has a bright pink label but it does contain all the information you would need to find this wine or have your favorite shop order it for you.

    IMG_7688

Here's a wine tip from us. Turn the bottle around and get to know that back label. We always check the ABV when buying wine because we want to reward those who use restraint and produce lower alcohol wines by choosing their products.

When you like a wine and want to find it again, photograph the back label as well as the front. That back label will tell your wine merchant what importer to contact to buy it. We picked up ours at City Liquors, 620 Cambridge St., Cambridge, MA. Price Range: $15 to $20.

  • A Sibling of an Old Favorite, March Comes in with Dibon Cava Brut Rosé

There are a few great stories to tell you about our choice of a sparkling wine to toast the month of March. This month we picked Dibon Cava Brut Rosé, another great value with bubbles. This one is 100% Garnacha!

    CHE_2743 copy

Its sibling, the Brut Reserve (with the orange label behind this month's choice), is a longtime favorite of ours and of a bunch of people we rely on for great wine guidance. When Penny spotted the Rosé on her monthly shopping stop on Cambridge Street, she grabbed a bottle.

DIBON BRUT ROSE NEW LABEL JULY 12 2016

This wine is brought to our area by one of our favorite importers, Oz Wine Company from Haverhill, MA. We've learned over the years that the Oz name on a wine is a pretty good indication that we are going to like it.

We've noticed one of our favorite dining spots with a noted cocktail program uses Dibon as a mixer for their sparkling wine cocktails. Smart move! And, at around $12 a bottle, one you could copy.

While she was at it, Penny grabbed a bottle of our original Dibon as a thank you gift for a great gentleman who has given us wonderful service for the past few years. He has mentioned to her that he loves sparkling wines and wants to learn more about them. What better lesson than a great wine that costs about the same as some beers.

Dibon is widely available. The Rosé is a bit harder to find. We picked up ours at City Liquors, 620 Cambridge St., Cambridge, MA, 617-945-0095, Price: ~ $12.

  • Ciao Febbraio! We’re Pouring Dama del Rovere – a Fresh, Light Spumante from the Veneto

February is a month that doesn’t stick around very long, so we’re not losing any time raising a glass of bubbly to welcome its arrival.

    IMG_3500

To help us maintain contact with this rapid mover, we’ve selected a fresh, light spumante from Verona in northeast Italy.

    CHE_2678

While spumante (sparkling wine) often brings to mind a very sweet holiday wine (as in Asti), the Durella (aka Durello) grape in our Dama del Rovere, Brenton Durello, Vino Spumante Brut is favored for its high level of acidity.

    IMG_3411

    Tasters describe a:

    • “Delicate and slightly fruity characteristic”
    • “The taste is dry, tangy, full-bodied”
    • “Pairs well with cheese, fish, sushi”  (italianwinelovers.it)
    • “Fresh, easy going spumante, great for aperitivo”
    • “Dry, crisp, thirst quenching”
    • “Light acidity, not too sweet”
    • “Good for mimosas”  (vivino.com)
    • Durella wines tend to be reasonably light and delicate"
    • "Floral, citrusy characters and mineral overtones”
    • “Food matches for Durella include: Tempura-battered prawns”  (wine searcher.com)

Alright! Enough with the temptation! We’re more than ready to un-cork. Here’s hoping you’ll select a bottle of bubbly and join our Sparkling Resolution as we toast February, day one. But, remember, do it soon! There are only 27 days remaining!

  • Champagne Résonance from Marie-Courtin, Special Bubbles to Ring-In the New Year!

Although we toast the beginning of every new month with a glass of bubbly to remain true to Our Sparkling Resolution, we admittedly get a little more excited about the arrival of January. After all, greeting a new year definitely holds special significance and therefore (follow me here) calls for a bottle of “special” bubbles.

    CHE_2583

We hope you'll join Our Sparkling Resolution and have fun with it. There are no rules!

For instance, if you’re someone who thinks Champagne (or any sparkler) is ONLY for special occasions, consider the advice of Master Sommelier Andrea (Immer) Robinson in her book "Great Wine Made Simple: Straight Talk from a Master Sommelier":

"Get over it. Say this to yourself: 'I deserve to open a bottle of bubbly. I do not need an excuse. I do not have to deny myself and wait until some significant event comes along.' For me, if the day dawns, that is an occasion for Champagne."

    Happy New Year!

  • Pinot Meunier Lands Lead Role in Champagne Laherte Frères!

Consider this your invitation to November’s opening of Champagne Laherte Frères Ultradition Brut. We’ve saved you a choice seat for this sparkling performance that has charmed critics around the globe.

    IMG_3713

Our BostonZest reviewers have nothing but praise for the delightful lead role so skillfully delivered by Pinot Meunier – usually offering a talented, but limited, supporting role in many a Champagne blend.

Here, the Laherte Frères Ultradition Brut blend is:

            60% Pinot Meunier

            30% Chardonnay

            10% Pinot Noir

    CHE_1903

    We were impressed by:

    • A toasty, chalky nose
    • A big pop of flavor as soon as the wine hits your palate
    • You might think it was a Rosé with that first burst of fruit – it was the Pinot Meunier taking a bow!
    • Good acidity and tiny bubbles
    • A lovely Champagne with a personality all its own
    • This wine could develop a cult following
    • We liked its flavor profile best when served at about 55º F

The winemaker points to, “… a subtle blend of our three varieties and the diversity of our Terroirs: a fine and complex blending with fruitiness and delicacy.”

    IMG_3711

    Other applause from well-known reviewers:

Wine Spectator, “Well-spiced and mouthwatering, offers a finely detailed bead and expressive flavors of black raspberry, dried apricot, orange blossom, fleur de sel and crystallized honey, minerally on the finish. 92 / 100.

    Antonio Galloni – Vinous: 90 /100

    Jancis Robinson: rating 16 / 20

      IMG_3703

It should also be said that this sparkler is imported by Oz Wine Company in Haverhill, MA. To us, seeing the Oz name on a bottle always means quality and that we’re likely to enjoy his selection.

    CHE_1899

We purchased our bottle of Champagne Laherte Frères Ultradition Brut at City Liquors in Cambridge for $45. Penny was told it has become a favorite of sommeliers in Europe.

Here’s to the very important month of November! Santé!
