  • Recent Food Truck Deliciousness

    We have been out and about trying the food on some of the new food trucks and unable to resist a few special favorites from the veterans of the scene. Here's what we've been eating!

    At City Hall Plaza, we enjoyed some slices from the Sweet Tomatoes Pizza Truck. We always like to start a pizza test with pepperoni and plain cheese. These two slices will bring us back to test more of their menu.

    Our first taste from the truck representing Biryani Park Sri Lankan/South Indian restaurant from Malden was the Chicken Biryani (shown above). It was great with the chicken cooked on the bone for full flavor and a sweet garnish of carmelized onions. We can't wait to try more of their menu items. (Click on any photo for a larger version)

    This scallop roll and clam chowder are from the Boston Shuckin' Truck! These folks offer grilled items that are a welcome change from fried seafood. The chowder was nice and thin (we are not pasty chowder fans) with an herbal undertone.

    At Captain Marden's Cod Squad Truck, we recommend one of their salads if you're in a hurry. This one had a piece of masterfully poached salmon. Update: The Boston Shuckin' Truck has disappeared from the Boston street scene.

    We continue to be attracted to their daily chowder specials. Here you see their shimp gumbo and crab and corn chowder. Both worthy of a second visit. Earlier, we reported on their Rhode Island, Rocky Point Clam Chowder and clamcakes.

    We also could not resist a visit to the new Boston Super Dog Truck (formerly Boston Speed Dog) to see how Chef Greg's grilled pastrami tastes off a new grill. It lived up to our memories and it's nice to have him within easy reach without a car to get to Newmarket Square. Bring a friend, these portions are big enough to share!

    Update: Sadly for his fans, Chef Greg died and the Boston Super Dog Truck is no more.

  • Farmers’ Markets Are Brimming with Goodness

    Just when our farmers' markets are brimming with fresh, ripe, abundant products, some customers forget about them. It's as if Labor Day and the changes we make in our schedules after that holiday take them off our agenda.

    This abundant table at the Copley Market is just a hint of what's on offer.

    We are here to tell you that that would be a big mistake. Some of the best fruit and vegetables of the year are showing up now at your local markets and farm stands. Right now, we're getting the best of the summer and the early fall crops.

    We see lots of you clicking on our spring post with the weekly market schedule. As the markets begin to close for the season, we'll prepare an update. But remember, most markets are open into October. Some markets like Copley, Dewey Square, City Hall Plaza, and Central Square Cambridge are open until Thanksgiving week.

    You can find the closing dates for your favorite market over at the MassFarmersMarkets site. Click on the Find tab, select "market" and enter your information in the boxes.

    What's your favorite fall crop? We love winter squash and new potatoes! We make big trays of roasted, root vegetables and use them as an ingredient in hash, soup, and salads. Here's more about that trick!

    Shannon Selig (photos above) opened the Prudential Center Lunchtime Concert series on Tuesday. This free concert series is part of the Berklee Summer in the City program.

    Keep your eye on Shannon and get out and see her whenever you can. She's piling up awards and we think this young singer/songwriter has a very bright future. These and few additional photos of this concert are in our Smug Mug gallery.

    Berklee Summer in the CIty 

    Berklee will be treating us to music at dozens of locations in and outside the city. If you get out to one of the concerts be sure to pick up the Berklee Summer in the City brochure. It features concerts by series, by location, by date and featured artists. You can also find the information on line here.

    Boston Public Library Courtyard

    Bacchante and Infant Faun are dancing on water in the courtyard of the Boston Public Library. Mark your calendars! The popular, free, Friday lunchtime concert series has returned to the courtyard and continues through the end of August. Here's a link to details of the full schedule.

    Hatch Shell Concert Series 2012

    In 1939, the trustees of Maria E. Hatch’s estate entered into an agreement to give the Commonwealth of Massachusetts $300,000 to build a concertorium, or music shell, on the Storrow Memorial Embankment in Boston. It would be a memorial to her bother, Boston real estate auctioneer, Edward Hatch.

    The agreement was very specific as to the use of the structure. It would be for “musical and artistic purposes… of general public interest and entertainment, except, however, that it shall not be used for sectarian, political or controversial purposes.” Here's this year's list of musical presentations!
