Poppy Is Six Years Old!

Poppy, our little Westie, had a birthday this week and now she is six. She had a great walk on Harbor Beach in Provincetown to start her birthday celebration.

Now that she's back in Boston, we have given her a few extra days to reign as Duchess Poppy Whitehead, birthday girl. Yesterday she had a lovely time sitting on a park bench and some extra playtime with Ed.

Here's Poppy, with love in her eyes, as she watched Ed as he walked by us.

David Ryan from the Boston Globe spotted us on a walk and asked if he could take a few shots of Boston's famous dog model. She was not as cooperative with him as she is with her own pair of photographers. Nonetheless she made the paper. She was not impressed since she appears in papers all the time as a part of our City Paws column and we never call her a he.

On Patriots' Day, on the waterfront in Provincetown, the waves pounded, the wind howled, and the building shook, but Poppy was snug inside so she ignored it all and snoozed away.

She loves beach walks. Each day, in Provincetown, she pulls us to the gate and must see for herself if the stairs lead to ocean water or beach. At high tide the water is more than half way up the stairway.

It has been a year of upgrades so we've spent some time at the Apple Store where Poppy is not only welcome, but also gets lots of attention from the geniuses and patrons.

This little dog is best known as the snuggler. Sit still for a bit and you may soon find you have a snuggle buddy.

She has even started requesting that Penny sit in her favorite chair more often so snuggling can commence!

What Better Way to Welcome May then with a Paul Chollet Crémant Brut Rosé!

Get a jump on all the May celebrations and join us to toast the arrival of one of our favorite months!

On a recent visit to Provincetown, we spied a bottle of Crémant Brut Rosé and wondered if it just might have the poise and finesse to help us enjoy keeping "Our Sparkling Resolution."

I wouldn’t say, “we’ve never met a crémant we didn’t like,” but almost! It’s a nice value bottle of bubbles that’s often just as satisfying, and perhaps not as intimidating, as Champagne.

Paul Chollet Crémant De Bourgogne Brut Rosé is described by its winemaker as having fine bubbles with a creamy and persistent mousse. The delicacy of the Rosé can be seen in “the very beautiful robe of a shiny and delicate pink” – sounds like poise to me.

The characteristics of the Pinot Noir are “marked by notes of red fruits, raspberry and ripe[ness].”

The cuvée of Pinot Noir, “gives us the balance, the generosity and the power of the Pinot Noir Bourguignons” – anyone for finesse?

“This ideal aperitif wine is very popular with a chocolate or fruit dessert or a tatin tart.”

Can’t wait to hear that cork pop!

We purchased our bottle of Paul Chollet Crémant De Bourgogne Brut Rosé at Glass Half Full in Provincetown for around $20.

Meet Alice “Tajad” Glera: Our October Sparkling Wine

Our recommended sparkling wine for October 1st is Alice "Tajad" Glera. We met this delightful prosecco at Coppa Enoteca in the South End. It's been on the menu for a while and we've enjoyed it on our past few visits. Please join us as we toast a Happy New Month!

It is the perfect sip for a lazy afternoon on the patio. And, it's a great selection to match the Coppa menu.

We enjoyed it with a variety of dishes from a plate of mixed crostini to the semolina pasta with Ligurian veal ragu and salsa verde.

A beautiful glass of bubbles adds a touch of festive to any meal.

If you are joining our Sparkling Resolution and have decided to start each month with a glass of sparkling wine, we highly recommend a trip to Coppa. You can toast the new month with a glass of Alice and some wonderful small plates. It's one of our favorite ways to spend any afternoon!

"Tajad means “blend” in local Veneto dialect, and this kind of blend of local varieties used to be the daily drinker in the Veneto. Tasting it makes one question the wisdom of abandoning those antique varieties for a single-minded, conformist focus on Glera. (Wine now must be at least 85% Glera to be labeled Prosecco.) Tajad shows a little spiciness, a touch of rusticity, and a lot of character. It makes you wish you could be standing at Nonna Alice’s bar, asking her for another glass."

Meet Alice “Tajad” Glera: Our October Sparkling Wine

Consult Our Wine Collection Before You Shop for Bottles of Bubbles!

Our Sparkling Resolution gives us an advantage when it comes to choosing a bottle of bubbles for New Year's Eve. We start each month with a glass of sparkling wine.

We share those wine selections with you in our wine collection.

You'll find Champagne, Cava, Prosecco, Crémant, plus bubbles from places including Portugal, California, Oregon, and Massachusetts on our wine list.

We find something to toast each time the 1st comes around. Maybe it's a good thing that happened in the past month or something we're looking forward to in the month ahead. Or, perhaps the 1st of the month finds us in a special place where we've discovered a special bottle.

Most of the time, our choice is a great value we've bought on sale or a moderately priced treat.

Occasionally, we'll indulge in a special wine for a special occasion or celebration.

If you're looking for something to serve to a crowd or a special bottle to share with a special person, we have made our list and you can check it twice, three times, or as often as you'd like.

As you toast 2015, consider joining the Sparkling Resolution we made back in 2007 and begin each month with a glass of lively bubbles.

Lions Will Dance in Chinatown!

It has been a few years since we've attended a Lion Dance Celebration in Boston's Chinatown. It's on our schedule for this year. This year's event will be held on Sunday, February 17th, 2013 from 10AM to 5PM.

Update: 02/17/13 from @BostonChinatown: "Event is still going We are delaying about an hour so 11:30am stage will be moved to Beach and harrison ave. http://bit.ly/WQi4fC "
