Wilbur the Geese Wrangler Is Welcome to Be Off-Leash in the Boston Public Garden

Meet Wilbur, one of the Border Collies that wrangles the Canada Geese who do so much damage to area parks.

Here he is circling the lagoon at the Boston Public Garden keeping the geese from feeling comfortable staying there.

His handler does her best to keep up with him so everyone can see the sign that explains he's doing Goose Control. (The young pup with her is watching Wilbur and learning what to do when his time comes.)

This is perfect work for this breed that needs a job to burn off all that inbred energy and need to herd.

While Wilbur is trained to obey and work off-leash, he has had problems with other dogs who are not supposed to be off-leash in this park. And, with so many dogs running wild in the park each morning, it is harder for people to accept that what Wilbur is doing is different.

Keep up the good work and chase those Geese, Wilbur. See you soon.

Spencer Is Pointing to Modern Farmer’s Guide to Farm Dogs

Spencer from Still Life Farm, wanted us to share all the excitement that has been going on this week over on the Modern Farmer site.

They have been featuring farm dogs all this week with everything from "Ruff Choice: Which Farm Dog Is Right for You?" to the official ModFarm Farm Dog Cam showing farm dogs at work.

Spencer says you should hop over and enjoy meeting some of the dogs that help bring food to the table.

Just this week, Spencer was up late a few nights protecting his hens from a wandering raccoon. Most of the time, his principal job is keeping his favorite farmer Curtis company as they put in a long day of chores on the farm.

But, Penny snapped this photo of him with that worshipful expression on his face as Halley, his favorite female farmer, walked past him. His expression went from bored to very interested in seconds!

If you have a favorite farm dog, let us know and we may feature him or her as an upcoming Sunday Dog.

This is the time of year when we enjoy meeting dogs who are visiting the city with their families. Recently, we had the chance to meet Spencer at the Copley Square Farmers' Market where he was making a quick visit with a member of his Still Life Farm family.

We enjoyed a quick chat, but this hard-working Border Collie was ready to get out of this noisy place and back to his duties on the farm!

Tips on “Being” from Sunday Dog, Ollie

To hear Ollie tell it, there’s no deep, philosophical secret to being a dog. While he admits it does take a bit of concentration, the most important thing to remember is, “Don’t over-think life. Just be yourself. And always, always be ready to PLAY!

This five year old Miniature Poodle loves everyone. Besides having energy to spare, his breed is known as “the second most intelligent” in the canine world. That’s why we felt confident asking Ollie to share his life experience with all of us.

His favorite toy? “The newest one!" Since everybody gives him toys, after they’ve been in the house for a month or so, Ollie passes them on to Buddy Dog– a shelter in Sudbury, MA.

Ollie always wears his boots this time of year. He loves the snowy, wintry weather, but not the rock salt which several veterinarians have warned him can trigger his epilepsy.

Ollie recommends an ice-melt that’s safer for paws and the dogs attached to them, and safe for the environment.

Great tips, Ollie! Thanks for sharing. You’re an amazing Sunday Dog!
