A Sunday Dog Alert: Careful with Those Dog Paws, There Are Bees in Them There Blossoms!
Blossoms from Linden trees are drifting down and blanketing walkways and grassy areas where we walk our dogs.

If you look closely, you may see bees and other stinging critters buzzing among the blooms.

When you see a tree in bloom, dropping blossoms along your path, be sure to check for possible dangers to those precious paws.

When the three of us are out walking, one of us walks ahead of our dog Poppy to gently scatter the insects. This avoids having her step on and anger one of the busy pollen gatherers. Since she's a small dog, if she's walking with just one of us, we carry her through the blossoms.

The Lawn Is Brown and the River Is Green!

On a walk this week, we passed the Muddy River and saw this contrast in colors.

The lawn in the small park at Charlesgate East is dry and brown, while the surface of the Muddy River running alongside is emerald green.

What the specific growth on the river's surface is, we don't know. But this page from the Charles River Watershed Association does give some alerts for some types of blooms. In the past, there have been potentially toxic blooms on the Muddy.

The Back Bay Magnolias Are Slowly Blooming

With last week's return to cooler temperatures, the opening of the magnolia buds along Commonwealth Avenue slowed, but it is happening! And, if we get a sunny day or two, we think the spectacular display should peak this week.

Right now, there are a few early bloomers ready for their closeups. The white magnolias, like those above and below, are the first to bloom and a few have already begun to drop their petals.

There is the slightest tinge of pink even in the whitest of the white blossoms. It's fun to notice things like that when you move in for a close view.

The next bloomers are the Magnolia stellata, or star magnolia with many small petals per bud.

Finally, the big show stoppers will be the thousands of Magnolia × soulangeana or saucer magnolia.

And, an encore will be performed by the deep purple variety that's still showing tightly, closed buds on the few trees we can identify.
