Lucy Stone’s Wisdom for Women’s History Month

The next time you walk by the Boston Women's Memorial, think about the words of wisdom these and other women of Boston have left behind for us.

Ed took this great photo of Lucy Stone with Abigail Adams in the background at the beginning of one of last month's snowstorms. We saved it to remind our readers that March is National Women's History Month.

Here are three quotes from Lucy Stone (1818-1893):

"I expect to plead not for the slave only, but for suffering humanity everywhere. Especially do I mean to labor for the elevation of my sex."

Floral Tribute for Phillis Wheatley

Over the years, the sculpture of Phillis Wheatley on the Boston Women's Memorial has recieved gifts ranging from lottery tickets and pennies to teddy bears and sweaters. Last week someone left a bouquet of silk flowers in fall colors.

Lucy Stone and Abigail Adams also have tokens left by admireres but it is Lucy who receives the most.

Take a July 4th Revolutionary Stroll in the Heart of Boston

While you're waiting for the concert and fireworks, consider taking a stroll to visit some of the people who led the battle for independence.

In addition to George Washington, you'll also find statues honoring Revolutionary heroes Colonel Thomas Cass, and Tadeusz Kościuszko in the Boston Public Garden.

The Commonwealth Avenue Mall has three important figures from the Revolutionary War: Alexander Hamilton, General John Glover, and Abigail Adams.

And, of course, the Freedom Trail is the perfect hop-on-hop-off path that honors the people and places that played a leading role in what we celebrate today!

Visit A Patriot on Patriot’s Day

Just take a walk on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall to visit a few patriotic Americans on this day set aside to honor the men and women who have protected our freedoms.

This statue of John Glover stands between Berkeley and Clarendon Streets. But you'll also find Alexander Hamiltion, William Lloyd Garrison, Samuel Eliot Morison, Lucy Stone, and Abigail Adams along the walk.
