  • Painting the Town: Fresh Paint Event from the Copley Society

    Once a year, the Copley Society sends its artist members across the city to capture Boston at that moment in time. The event is called Fresh Paint. The works produced are sold a week later at a gala auction to benefit the organization.

    They say: "The Copley Society of Art, Co|So, is the oldest non-profit art association in the United States, with a history dating back to 1879. We currently represent over 500 living artist members, ranging in experience from students to nationally-recognized artists and in style from traditional and academic realists to contemporary and abstract painters, photographers, and sculptors."

    We Say: This is one of our favorite walks of the year. It's free, you pick your route, you get to meet and chat with talented people, and you can even take your dog along. And, the Co|So gallery on Newbury Street is always worth a visit. Drop by before the weekend, pick up a map, gather some friends, and enjoy this uniquely Boston experience.

    In the photo above from last year, artist Hilary Baldwin had a perfect day to paint a scene of the Public Garden and the Back Bay beyond.

  • Toast April with Nino Franco Prosecco – an 11% Sparkler!

    Another month means another sparkling toast from us to the future. This time, we raise a glass of Nino Franco Rustico Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG. Not only does this wonderful Italian sparkler add light and life to our day, but it also does it with a low 11% alcohol so that we can have a glass for lunch and then go back to work.

    (Note: We're not recommending that you drink and drive or do critical tasks after a glass of wine. We walk to our home office and only operate keyboards and cameras.)

    This wine is 100% Glera, the traditional grape for Prosecco. In fact, the grape was called Prosecco for most of its history until recently. According to Wikipedia, the book "Il roccolo Ditirambo," written by Aureliano Acanti in 1754 says, "And now I would like to wet my mouth with that Prosecco with its apple bouquet."

    This sparkler is also a great value when you can find it around the $15.99 price at retail. We bought ours at Bauer Wine & Spirits on Newbury Street.

    It is straw colored with persistent bubbles and a crisp, pleasant flavor and, yes, an apple note that makes you understand how a host in the Veneto or Friuli regions of Italy might greet evey guest with a glass of this as a sparkling welcome.

    You'll also find it on wine lists across the area. While it is about to rotate off the list at Island Creek Oyster Bar in Kenmore Square, we did enjoy a glass for lunch last week and could return to work and accomplish something post Nino! (Island Creek also has a reserve offering from Nino Franco on the current list that you may want to try.)

  • Sunday Dog New Year’s Resolutions for 2013

    Our puppy Poppy has been frantically picking up her P-mail on every corner in the neighborhood and she tells us a few of this year's Sunday Dogs have made New Year's Resolutions. (And if they haven't, she's making some for them.)

    Now & Future Sunday Dog, King! is growing up to be a big, strong German Shepherd. He has resolved to stay as sweet as he was as a pup and to always remember that he and Poppy are no longer the same size and so to play gently with her.

    We told you that Chiquita Loves to Dance! Poppy tells us that Chiquita has resolved to open her own dance studio in 2013 and teach you and your dog how to cha cha, foxtrot, and jitterbug together!

    Not only is it true that, Odis “Loves Everyone!” but everyone loves and misses him too. Poppy has sent him a message that he has to get back to his old neighborhood more often. She says we have a great selection of places to get presents!

    Not only can Sunday Dog Ollie give Tips on “Being,” but he's also going to spend 2013 writing a book on how to respond like a mature and sensible gentleman when a young neighbor girl has an enormous crush on you.

    It should be a best seller among dark and handsome guys like Ollie who have to deal with problems like this from girls like Duchess Poppy.

    When you first met Hudson, He didn't need a dog license because he was too young. But, now that he's grown, he has a fan club and people who come to visit him in his shop, Q Optical on Newbury Street. His goal for 2013 is to move up the corporate ladder, become the top dog, and have everyone at Q Optical working for him. And, he intends to win his way with sweetness and love. Good Boy!

    Finally, in a species by herself is Sophia Cat, last seen playing "Her Glass Harmonica". She also works on Newbury Street at Bauer Wine & Spirits.

    She has resolved to form an association to represent the Newbury Street shop cats and dogs and make sure their rights as workers are protected.

    At the moment, Sophia would like to organize a protest against the holiday window display that's keeping her from sunning herself in her favorite spot. And, if you want to join her picket line, she won't even care if you are of the canine persuasion.

    Happy New Year to all our Sunday Dogs and Cats!

    May you all have a happy and healthy new year and may you succeed with all your resolutions.

  • Sunday Dog, Lucas Has a Nose for Fashion!

    We all excel at something, especially Sunday Dogs like Lucas, who has a nose for fashion! This two year old Cavapoo (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel/Poodle) first showed an aptitude for the business while working part-time last summer at a clothing shop on Nantucket.

    Besides attracting customers to the store, Lucas loved the attention from everyone who stopped by. This little one did such a great job, he was promoted to the company’s Boston location – Skirtin Around on Newbury Street – where he can often be seen peering out at passersby.

    When we stopped in to say hello last week, Lucas was on a break in one of his favorite out-of-the-way spots. He hadn’t quite finished stringing all the holiday lights, but found time to mix it up with our Poppy – he loves it when other dogs come in.

    We also discovered that Lucas likes to sit on the counter in the shop. He’s found that people pet him longer because they don’t have to bend down – this guy will be running the company before long!

    Before coming to work, Lucas enjoys visiting his nearby dog park most mornings to get a good workout. And, occasionally, this spunky little CavaPoo can be found next door at Fish & Bone, looking for cookies from one of his favorite employees there.

    Apparently, Lucas not only has a nose for fashion, but also can appreciate the aroma of a good cookie?

    Besides attracting customers to the store, Lucas loved the attention from everyone who stopped by. This little one did such a great job, he was promoted to the company’s Boston location – Skirtin Around on Newbury Street – where he can often be seen peering out at passersby.

    When we stopped in to say hello last week, Lucas was on a break in one of his favorite out-of-the-way spots. He hadn’t quite finished stringing all the holiday lights, but found time to mix it up with our Poppy – he loves it when other dogs come in.

    We also discovered that Lucas likes to sit on the counter in the shop. He’s found that people pet him longer because they don’t have to bend down – this guy will be running the company before long!

    Before coming to work, Lucas enjoys visiting his nearby dog park most mornings to get a good workout. And, occasionally, this spunky little CavaPoo can be found next door at Fish & Bone, looking for cookies from one of his favorite employees there.

    Apparently, Lucas not only has a nose for fashion, but also can appreciate the aroma of a good cookie?
