William Lloyd Garrison Looks Concerned, Wouldn’t You?

As workers with respirators wait on the scaffolding for cleaning products to be passed up to them, Mr. Garrison seems a bit concerned.

Rest assured sir, they mean you no harm. This is a crew of conservators from Rika Smith McNally & Associates hired by the Friends of the Public Garden to give the statue a check-up and perform and annual cleaning and maintenance.

Earlier in the week, Rika spotted the potential for damage on the top of Mr. Garrison's head and perhaps that called for stronger cleaning materials than the mild ones this group normally uses.

Roses for Sarmiento

Those who walk by the statue of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall may not realize how important this spot is to those visiting Boston from Argentina.

This week, someone placed roses on the paving stones that The Garden Club of the Back Bay members added among the plantings around the sculpture.

These stones were put in place to make it easier for people to have photos taken of themselves or their group with the statue. Ed and I often volunteer to take these photos with visitors' cameras and we're fairly sure other neighbors do the same.

This was not among my favorite sculptures when I first encountered it, but over the years I've come to associate it with the people who take time out of their few hours in Boston to stop and pay tribute, have a photo taken for the folks back home, and, in at least one instance, stand with tears in their eyes looking up at a former President of Argentina being honored in a foreign land.

Floral Tribute for Phillis Wheatley

Over the years, the sculpture of Phillis Wheatley on the Boston Women's Memorial has recieved gifts ranging from lottery tickets and pennies to teddy bears and sweaters. Last week someone left a bouquet of silk flowers in fall colors.

Lucy Stone and Abigail Adams also have tokens left by admireres but it is Lucy who receives the most.

Provincetown “Frenchie” with a Stand-in!

On every Provincetown visit we make a point of checking out some of our favorite gardens. This one, on Commercial Street, had a new addition– a Frenchie sculpture.

Suddenly, the real star emerged from the house, and granted a brief, private photo op!

And, just as abruptly, returned to seclusion, leaving the stand-in to deal with the next admirers!

Thanks for coming out to see us, little Frenchie!

Completed and Stunning: The Provincetown Library

After watching the progress of its renewal for years, it was a great pleasure to see the Provincetown Library completed and totally beautiful on a recent visit.

It’s Spring, Mother Nature Says So…

The trees agree that it's Spring. If you love the Commonwealth Avenue Magnolias and come view them around Patriots Day each year, move that date up to this weekend.

This cherry tree was in full bloom outside the Prudential Center yesterday.

And, on Sunday, BU students made a beeline for the "BU beach" as they returned from Spring break.
