Financial Services: As the British would say, this is a Bank Holiday with both banks and the stock markets in the United State closed. International markets are open.

City, Town, State, and Federal offices and facilities are closed: This includes schools, libraries, and the Postal Service. Only emergency services are available.

Parking & Street Sweeping

Boston Parking: You don't have to feed the meters. Other parking rules apply.

Street Sweeping: The city says, "Daytime street sweeping is suspended on city holidays, but nighttime sweeping schedules remain in effect. Constituents are advised to call 617-635-4500 for exact details."

Trash Collection & Recycling

Boston Trash Collection for Thanksgiving week – The city has changed the way it publishes the schedule for holidays so that you now have to go to the city site and look up your specific address in order to get information.

UPDATE 11/20/15: Check your trash pick up schedule. There are changes. For example, the city sent out a neighborhood notice that there will be no pick up in the Back Bay on Thanksgiving. This is a new reduction in service.

MBTA Schedule Changes Updated 11/20/15

The MBTA has published their Thanksgiving schedule. Here is the link to the MBTA schedule changes for holidays. This link will change sometime before and after the holiday. We have created a PDF version of the page for the weekend that you can download if you wish.

Here's a quick summary, of the highlights.
- Wednesday November 25th will have normal Wednesday subway, bus, and Commuter Rail schedules with extra Silver Line service to and from Logan Airport.
- Thanksgiving November 26th will have subways including the Silver Line on a Sunday schedule. Buses will run on a Sunday schedule with some routes not operating. Commuter Rail will run on a Sunday Schedule so some routes will not operate.
- Friday November 27th will have the Red, Orange, and Blue lines on a Friday Schedule and the Green Line on a Saturday Schedule. The Silver line will have extra service. Commuter Rail will run on a Friday schedule.

Veterans Day 2015 What’s Open or Closed in Boston Plus MBTA, Trash & Parking Info

Here's a rundown of what's open in Boston on Veterans Day, information on Boston trash collection, parking meters, and MBTA schedules for Wednesday, November 11, 2015.

This page is out of date. We have created an ongoing resource page for the Veteran's Day holiday at this link. We update that one each year with any new information that becomes available.

This year, November 11th falls on a Wednesday, giving a few lucky folks a break in the middle of the week.

We publish these reminders before each holiday to help you make the most of your time off!

Restaurants, bars: Open

Convenience stores: Open

Supermarkets: Open

Retail stores: Are allowed to open if the owners choose

Liquor stores: Open

City, Town, State and Federal offices and facilities are closed: This includes schools, libraries, and the Postal Service (express mail will be delivered). Only emergency services are available.

Financial Services: As the British would say, this is a Bank Holiday with most Banks closed. But, we are noticing that some banks are keeping some branches open, so check with your own institution.

Stock market: Open, as are international markets.

Boston Parking: The City says, "City of Boston parking meters are free on Sundays and legal holidays and no time limit is enforced. All other parking regulations, including rush hour restrictions at meters, remain in effect."

Street Sweeping: City says, "Daytime street sweeping is suspended on city holidays, but nighttime sweeping schedules remain in effect. Constituents are advised to call 617-635-4500 for exact details."

Boston Trash Collection:

The city has changed the way it publishes the schedule for holidays so that you now have to go to the city site and look up your specific address in order to get information.

The MBTA has posted its Veterans Day Schedule.

The system will operate on a weekday schedule. You will find Complete Details Here. (But, only for a few days before and after the holiday.)

For additional information on routes, schedules, and fares, "please call the MBTA Customer Service Center at 617-222-3200 or 1-800-392-6100 (hearing impaired TDD 617-222-5146)" or contact them at www.mbta.com.

And, if you have to work: Holiday Pay Information for Retail Establishments from the Secretary of State.

"Retail establishments which operate on New Year's Day, Columbus Day after 12 noon, or on November 11th after 1:00 p.m. are required to pay their employees time and one-half regardless of the number of employees on their payroll."

What’s Open & Closed in Boston on Columbus Day 2017 Plus Trash, Parking, MBTA Schedules & More.
Here's an updated (on 09/18/17) rundown of what's open and closed in Boston on Columbus Day and changes to MBTA schedules for October 9, 2017. Should additional information become available, we'll also update you on parking, street sweeping, traffic alerts, road closures, parades, and trash collection.

Boston Public Market: Old Friends in a New Place

Our first visit to the new Boston Public Market was highlighted by hugs and visits with old friends, both people and products.

We took the MBTA to Haymarket Station last Wednesday for our introductory tour. It was lunchtime and the prepared food spots were hopping. It was obvious that many of the people there were like us, looking around and getting to know this new resource.

One of our first visits was with Kate Stillman at Stillman Quality Meats. Look up for the "S & Q" logo above her area. She proudly showed us the wide selection of products available at this location and reminded us that we have been her customers for ten years.

Having fresh meats of this quality available year-round is a great bonus for all of Kate's longtime customers who have followed her from farmers market to farmers market, CSA pick up sites, and her famous "Meat Meets."

Another farmers market friend, Leigh Foster from Nella Pasta was busy making orecchiette for their daily meal special. Remember, when you're looking for something to eat at the market, some vendors, like Nella Pasta, have prepared food in addition to the wonderful selection of things to take home.

And, since these recipes are freshly made with seasonal local produce, those items may change daily. This gives regulars a wider menu of options.

Some old friends were producers we've known for a long time like Daniele, Inc. We've been buying their Salame Tuscana at Market Basket and loving it. Now we have access to their New England Local Line.

These products are not only produced in Rhode Island, but are also made from hogs grown by local area farmers. In fact Daniele has been the recipient of a Good Food Award. The sponsoring organization explains that, "The Good Food Awards recognize that truly good food—the kind that brings people together and builds strong, healthy communities—contains all of these ingredients."

Davide Dukcevich, co-owner of Daniele Foods, has said, "I think it's very important that this award recognizes food producers who work with local farmers. The farmers are the ones holding firm when they could make more money by selling their land. They are the ones who work hard and are committed to the tradition of nourishing our communities."

We look forward to nibbling our way across this product line.

And, of course, we met some new friends-of-friends like American Stonecraft. Please click over and read their fascinating story of a relationship with farmers who grow stones.

We were quick to appreciate the Boston stone from our old friends at Allandale Farm. If you look at their list of more than 60 farms, you may find a number of your favorites among their partners.

Of course, there are more old friends to visit and many new friends to make at this wonderful new venue. We'll keep you updated as we visit again and again.

Boston Public Market: Old Friends in a New Place

The sponsoring organization explains that, "The Good Food Awards recognize that truly good food—the kind that brings people together and builds strong, healthy communities—contains all of these ingredients."

Davide Dukcevich, co-owner of Daniele Foods, has said, "I think it's very important that this award recognizes food producers who work with local farmers. The farmers are the ones holding firm when they could make more money by selling their land. They are the ones who work hard and are committed to the tradition of nourishing our communities."

We look forward to nibbling our way across this product line.

We were quick to appreciate the Boston stone from our old friends at Allandale Farm. If you look at their list of more than 60 farms, you may find a number of your favorites among their partners.

Market Report: 2015 Summer Farmers Markets “One Every Day of the Week”
We are so happy that the Copley Square Farmers Market is open for the season. That's the home market for the BostonZest team and where we pick up lots of news from the farms. But, we also receive press releases, newsletters, and correspond with farm friends year-round to gather news for readers like you.

Today, we'll tell you about the "One Every Day of the Week" farmers market campaign over in Cambridge.

For years, we've pointed out that if you live in the central area of Boston, you have access to a farmers market seven days a week. The City of Cambridge has made a campaign of that fact to support the fresh, local food producers. If you'd like a copy of the poster, you can download one here. If the option for a particular day is not within walking distance from your home, it will be easy to reach by public transportation. That makes for a very lively, fresh, local food scene in and around Boston.

Since we shop at many area markets, we took the idea and information from Cambridge's poster and added the other markets we frequent.
- Sunday: Charles Square, Cambridge
- Monday: Boston Public Market, Blackstone Street and Central Square, Cambridge
- Tuesday: Copley Square, South Station/Dewey Square, and Harvard University Farmers Market, Cambridge
- Wednesday: Boston Public Market, Blackstone Street; Cambridge Center (Kendall MBTA); Davis Square, Somerville; and Charlestown
- Thursday: South Station/Dewey Square, Kendall Square (500 Kendall Street), Brookline/Coolidge Corner, Mission Hill/Roxbury, Brigham Circle, and East Boston/Central Square
- Friday: Copley Square and Charles Square, Cambridge
- Saturday: Union Square, Somerville; Cambridgeport, Cambridge; Roslindale/Adams Park; and Egleston, Jamaica Plain
