Restaurants, Bars: Open

Convenience Stores: Open

Supermarkets: Open

Retail Stores: Are allowed to open, if the owners choose

Liquor Stores: Open

City, Town, State and Federal offices and facilities are closed: This includes Schools, Libraries, and the Postal Service (express mail will be delivered). Only emergency services are available.

Financial Services: As the British would say, this is a Bank Holiday with both Banks and the Stock Markets in the United States closed. International markets are open.

Boston Parking: You don't have to feed the meters. Other parking rules apply.

Update from the city site 01.18.13: "Tow Lot: The Tow Lot will be closed from 12PM on Saturday to 7AM on Tuesday."

The City website says,

"Martin Luther King Day, Monday January 21, 2013

No Delay of trash or recycling collection in Back Bay, Bay Village, Beacon Hill, Charlestown, Chinatown, Fenway, Leather District, Mission Hill, North End, Roxbury, South Boston, and the South End.

Delay trash and recycling collection 1 day if you live in Allston, Brighton, Dorchester, East Boston, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain*, Mattapan, Roslindale, or West Roxbury.
*If you live in Jamaica Plain and your trash is picked up 2 times per week, do not delay."

Street Cleaning: The city says, "Daytime street sweeping is suspended on city holidays, but nighttime sweeping schedules remain in effect. Constituents are advised to call 617-635-4500 for exact details."

MBTA Schedule for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 21, 3013

Subway: Blue, Orange, Red, Green line and Silver lines will operate on a Saturday schedule.
Buses and Trackless Trolleys will operate on a Saturday schedule with a list of routes posted here that will not operate.
Commuter rail trains will operate on a regular weekday schedule.
Commuter boat services from Hingham, Hull, and Quincy will operate on regular weekday schedules.
Inner Harbor Ferry Service from Charlestown to Long Wharf will operate on a regular weekday schedule.
The RIDE will operate on a Saturday schedule.

City, Town, State and Federal offices and facilities are closed: This includes Schools, Libraries, and the Postal Service (express mail will be delivered). Only emergency services are available.

Financial Services: As the British would say, this is a Bank Holiday with both Banks and the Stock Markets in the United States closed. International markets are open.

Boston Parking: You don't have to feed the meters. Other parking rules apply.

Update from the city site 01.18.13: "Tow Lot: The Tow Lot will be closed from 12PM on Saturday to 7AM on Tuesday."

We Recommend Drinking Boston (The Book!)

Boston journalist Stephanie Schorow obviously did a lot of research for her new book, Drinking Boston: A History of the City and Its Spirits. But, we bet she had fun doing it!

But, seriously, she really did collect a lot of information in preparing to write this book. As perpetual students of Boston's rich history, we loved learning so many new aspects and seeing how alcohol, the places where drinking took place, and social reformer movements fit into what we already know.

The book takes you on a time travel trek from inside Boston’s first colonial taverns, through the saloon era, on to Prohibition, stopping at the 1930s and 1940s nightclub scene, and bringing you right up to the current craft cocktail movement. Did you know that early taverns sometimes served as courtrooms?

Along the way Schorow delves into the issues of class, social reform, and reminds you of the breweries, neighborhood bars, and some of the people who were an important part of what she calls a “…drinking town.”

When Saint Patrick's Day (March 17, 2013) Falls on a Sunday

This year, Saint Patrick's Day falls on a Saturday so I was curious, would city and state workers in Suffolk County get Friday off or Monday? And will parking, trash, and liquor sales change for the day. You'll find those answers below.

I do know that a lot of people will be taking advantage of the weekend date to come to Boston. About your holiday questions…

According to the Secretary of State's website,

"All holidays falling on Sunday must be observed on Monday, under state law. Saturday holidays are observed on Saturday." That means this year, no deal. Next year, they get Monday off!

The day is not listed on Boston's list of holidays that change parking regulations or trash pick up, so feed those meters and stick to your trash schedule.

Basically, everything is open. But, in the past the city has asked South Boston liquor stores and bars to cut off sales early. Here's a Boston.com story on that from last year.

What’s Open in Boston & MBTA Schedules Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2012

Here's a run-down of what's open in Boston, plus Boston trash collection, and MBTA schedules for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day– January 16, 2012. We try to publish this information ahead of the holiday so you can make your plans.

Restaurants, Bars: Open

Convenience Stores: Open

Supermarkets: Open

Retail Stores: Are allowed to open, if the owners choose

Liquor Stores: Open

City, Town, State and Federal offices and facilities are closed: This includes Schools, Libraries, and the Postal Service (express mail will be delivered). Only emergency services are available.

Financial Services: As the British would say, this is a Bank Holiday with both Banks and the Stock Markets in the United States closed. International markets are open.

Boston Parking: You don't have to feed the meters. Other parking rules apply.

Boston Trash and Recycling:

The City website says,

"Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Monday, January 16, 7am – Saturday, January 21, 2012, 5pm - Delay trash and recycling pickup 1 day only if you live in Allston, Brighton, Dorcheser, East Boston, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain*, Mattapan, Roslindale, or West Roxbury. *If you live in Jamaica Plain and your trash is picked up 2 times per week, do not delay."

"Street Cleaning: No MONDAY Cleaning (resumes 12:01AM Tuesday)"

"Tow Lot: CLOSED from 1PM SAT. 1/14/12 to 7AM TUES. 1/17/12"

The press release says:

"The MBTA today announced its service schedule for Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday, Monday, January 16, 2012.

Blue, Orange, and Red line trains, and Green line streetcars and trackless trolleys will operate on a Saturday schedule.
Buses will operate on a Saturday schedule.
Commuter rail trains will operate on its regular weekday schedule.
Commuter boat services from Hingham, Hull, and Quincy will operate on regular weekday schedules.
Inner Harbor Ferry Service from Charlestown to Long Wharf will operate on a regular weekday schedule.
The RIDE will operate on a Saturday schedule.
