Crystal Brook Farm offers a delightful goat cheese picnic lunch. The day we took this photo each bag included a container of their goat cheese with olive oil and herbs de Provence, french bread, trail mix, a plate, napkin, knife, and a dollar-off coupon for the next purchase.

    In season right now!

This is the height of the harvest season. The stone fruit selection is glorious, the vegetables overflow their bins, and you enjoy each bite knowing this-or-that will soon be gone.

    Get Some before it's gone!

Berries, stone fruit, heirloom tomatoes, and local honey – we've begun stockpiling our favorite from Foppema's Farm for winter.

    Coming Soon!

Mums for fall planting, herbs for window sills, pumpkins, winter squash, late season apples.

Each season seems to bring new varieties of fruit and vegetables like these lemon cucumbers.

Pickling cucumbers are now a staple at most farms.

Eggplants are appearing in many sizes, shapes, and colors, even the original egg-shaped white ones that gave this vegetable its name. I would say it's the English language name but the British call them aubergine.

And, peppers are showing up in all degrees of heat, ripeness, and flavor.

Local garlic is now available. Remember, this is so much fresher and hotter than what we get in stores the rest of the year that you should add it in steps. It's packed with zinging flavor. You might make your favorite 40 clove chicken with 30 cloves.

The Word from the Farms & Markets

Peter Ward, Central Square Cambridge, Farmers' Market Manager says, "Now with the extreme heat gone, you can boil water again and plop in some fresh-made vegetable- or meat-filled ravioli from Valicenti Organico, or grill delicious grass-fed beef and pork from  or broil fresh-butchered chicken from Copicut Farms or enjoy Chris Manning's Massachusetts coast lobsters, live or already steam-cooked."

Ben Sommer, Copley Square Farmers' Market Manager has a challenge for his customers. "I was pleasantly surprised this past week to spy some cantaloupe and red watermelon at Atlas' stand. Seed spitting contest anyone?"

  • Boston Local Food Festival Photos From Over the Weekend

Last year we heard great reviews on the Boston Local Food Festival. That put it on our calendar for this past weekend. We made our way to the Greenway, checked in with a few old friends, and got to know some local food folks who were new to us.

Jeff Barry explains Boston Organics to a visitor. We've been a customer of his for years and were able to tell this woman what a great service he operates!

We've seen Shady Oaks Organics' mushrooms at the Copley Farmers' Market but at the festival we met and interviewed the cultivator, Leif Johnson.

We'd love to see this great opportunity for local food businesses to show off their wares grow and prosper so we also have a couple of suggestions for the organizers. We would have stayed a lot longer and visited many more vendors but shortened our stay.

The music was disruptive and way, way too loud. We found ourselves skipping all the booths that were near the musicians.

It was too crowded to really see everything. Using the whole Greenway with vendors on one side of the path and seating and eating areas on the other side would have been a great service to both vendors and visitors.
