  • April Sparkler: Denny Bini, Levante 90, Malvasia dell’Emilia Frizzante

We discovered our April sparkler, Denny Bini, Levante 90, Malvasia dell’Emilia Frizzante, at Eastern Standard in Kenmore Square. (In case you’ve just tuned in, for years we’ve kept our sparkling resolution to start each month with a toast over a glass of sparkling wine and we’d love to have you join us. More about that here.)

    IMG_1660 - Version 22015-03-04-Levante-90-Malvasia-Dell-Emilia-Eatern Standard© 2014 Penny Cherubino

We nearly missed out on this appealing wine because Eastern Standard pours one of my favorite sparklers and I was ready to enjoy that once again. I did ask about the new addition on the sparkling menu, but frowned at the words “slight sweetness” when our bartender described it.

Ed encouraged me to have a taste before I fell back on an old favorite. The young man behind the bar concurred and Ed and I both quickly learned that the frizzante hid whatever sweet notes others found in this wine.

What’s more, it opened up in the glass after a couple of swirls and seemed perfect for the food we had ordered. This is not a wine for everyone and it is very much a wine that you will enjoy more with food.

    IMG_1647 - Version 22015-03-04-salmon-Eatern-Standard-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

Ed’s salmon was a match since a sip of this Malvasia cleared the palate of the lush fattiness of the salmon.

    Frizzante Style

Rather than a full sparkler, this wine is frizzante. What’s that? Here’s a definition and an interesting article from the wiseGEEK site.

“… Italians refer to slightly sparkling wines as frizzante wines. In Spain, however, these wines are known as Vino de Aguja. The French term for them is Petillant, while the German term is Perlwein.”

Tip for wine seekers: Photograph the back of the bottle so you’ll have the information you’ll need to find wines in retail shops.

    Orange-ish

We located this Malvasia for sale at the Wine Bottega in the North End. (Call before you run over there. The selection in a small, focused wine shop like this is constantly changing.) Here’s their description of the wine.

“Slightly effervescent, bottle fermented, orange-ish, aromatic, dry malvasia from the Fizz Belt of Italy?  Need we say more?  Denny Bini is a very small scale, cult followed producer in Emilia-Romagna.  His wines are a reference point for the locals there and they are finally available (in very limited quantities) here in the US.”

Here’s an article from Wine Enthusiast about Orange wines. As they say, these are not for everyone, they are enjoying a cult following right now, and they are wonderful at matching multiple courses or a table of different choices at a restaurant.

    IMG_1644 - Version 22015-03-04-chicken-potpie-Eatern Standard© 2014 Penny Cherubino

I had chicken pot pie with this Malvasia and it works as well with this typical white wine dish as it did with the salmon.

  • Greeting March with Bailly Lapierre Crémant Rosé, a Worthy Sparkler!

What’s so great about March? Well, besides spring, St. Joseph’s Day zeppole, and a return to Daylight Saving Time, we get to raise a sparkling glass of Bailly Lapierre Crémont Rosé to welcome the new month.

    Rose_verres_2011

As part of Our Sparkling Resolution, we’re featuring this worthy sparkler because it has the spirit to face the next 31 days – whatever they may bring.

    Tasting Notes:

    Ed …

If you like Pinot Noir, this will please you. (90% Pinot Noir, 10% Gamay)

    • Not overpowering
    • Fruit just right for me
    • Very drinkable (with food & solo)
    • Impressive Mousse
    • Do Not Over-Chill

While this crémant is fine right from the chiller, it really caresses you as its temperature rises – becoming fruitier, softer, and friendlier.

    Penny …

Some reviewers have called it a picnic wine, maybe that’s why we went out to buy more during this cold spell. We needed the hope of spring.

We’ve also tried their Pinot Noir Brut and Reserve. Of the two, we like the Pinot better.

    Bailly Lapierre …

    • Unmistakable aromas of red berry fruit
    • Possesses a delicious softness free of anything sugary
    • Entirely fresh and with real finesse
    • Its mousse displays an almost frothy, airy lightness

    Wine Spectator Score: 84 …

    • Fresh
    • Strawberry, cherry and red currant notes in a delicate style
    • Ideal for summer picnics

    kd wine.com …

Bailly Lapierre Crémant de Bourgogne Rosé has a …

    • yeasty-toasty nose reminiscent of Champagne
    • ripe red fruit aromas of Pinot Noir
    • rich round, fruity character on the palate
    • beautifully balanced finish

  • Join Us as We Toast February 2015 with Charles de Cazanove Champagne

    IMG_7882 - Version 22015-01-31-Champagine-Charles de Cazanove- snow- sparkler© 2014 Penny Cherubino

On this snowy first day of the month, we’ll pop the cork on a bottle of Charles de Cazanove Champagne and raise a glass with high hopes for the next 28 days!

We admit to being happy hedonists, proud of our achievement to date, hoping to spread the word far-and-wide. What achievement? Read on …

    Our Sparkling Resolution

As we clinked our flutes of sparkling wine at the stroke of midnight to welcome 2008 – and promised to repeat the toast at the start of each month throughout the new year – we had no idea we would actually keep that resolution to this day!

While it seemed like a frivolous pledge at the time, we found ourselves looking forward to the first of every month. Searching out a bottle of cava, prosecco, cremant, or maybe a grower champagne for repeated celebrations during that year, always made us smile. Besides being an easy and pleasurable way to keep a resolution, it gave us a fresh way to start a new month, complete with a hopeful toast to whatever might lie ahead.

Join our Sparkling Resolution and reset your mojo by raising a glass of bubbly to greet each and every month. Salut!

Now, a bit about this month’s wine …

Charles de Cazanove Brut is a nicely balanced Champagne. We think it delivers a pleasant, yeasty, toastiness that works well with or without food. This sparkler can sit proudly next to some of our favorite Champagnes, including Bollinger and Piper-Heidsieck.

    Others Say …

“The fine bubbles form a large string against a golden background. A fruity nose and delicious, persistent barley sugar and brioche flavours. A very lively wine.” (Charles de Cazanove)

This Champagne … “has a great, open nose of sweet butter and even a touch of orange peel. On the palate it is clean and refreshing.” (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

Champagne Charles de Cazanove Brut … “offers an array of flavor, including toasted brioche, Gala apple, lemon zest, graphite and ginger, with a touch of honey. Elegant … good intensity … a moderate, nut-tinged finish.” (92 points, Wine Spectator/K&L Wines)

    Specs:

    • 60% Pinot Noir, 30% Pinot Meunier, 10% Chardonnay
    • Alcohol by Vol: 12%
    • Price range: 30 to 35 dollars

  • Notes on a New Year’s Eve Toast with Bollinger Rosé

We couldn’t let New Year’s Eve get too far out of sight without some quick notes on the spectacular bottle of Bollinger Rosé Champagne that helped us ring in 2015.

Empty Bollinger rose - Version 22014-12-31Bollinger-rose-cage-empty-bottle-cork-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

This champagne was even lovelier than we’d remembered from our December tasting. Here are some thoughts:

    •  nicely balanced with just enough Pinot to accompany our pâté mousse truffée …
    •  the wine matched well with aged cheddar, each enhancing the other …
    •  even chicken parmigiana bites couldn’t trip up this sparkler …
    •  we dared to pair these blushing bubbles with a moist chocolate cupcake … yes!

    BOLLINGER & Cupcake - Version 22014-12-31Bollinger-rose-chocolate-cupcake-empty-bottle-cork-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

    • for us, this Bollinger was at its best when not over-chilled …
    • we allowed it to warm in our glasses …
    • drank it through temperatures from chilled to room and found our sweet spot …

Speaking of sweet, we loved photographing this bottle. Bollinger gave it a label redesign recently, and we’re making it an early leader for our “Most Enchanting Empty Bottle Award of 2015.”

  • Bollinger Rosé Champagne Is Our Choice for Our New Year’s Toast!

This year, our choice of a wine to welcome in 2015 is Bollinger Rosé Champagne. This lovely pinot forward wine comes from one of our favorite Champagne houses. We’ve featured the Bollinger Special Cuvee Brut many times across the years. Thanks to a tasting at Brix Wine Shop, we were able to taste three wines from the Bollinger line: The Special Cuvee (to remind ourselves why we like it), the Rosé, and the 2004 Grande Annee.

    DSC_5116 - Version 22014-12-18bollinger-rose-champagne-new-years-eve-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

While we don’t go to a lot of wine tastings, we are tempted when we can sample wines that are seldom available by the glass or when we can meet a great winemaker, importer, or another of our heros of the wine world. Thank you to Brix for the number of times they have delivered such an opportunity.

    DSC_5103 - Version 22014-12-18-Bollinger-Rose-champagne-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

We start each month with a glass of bubbly and each year we search for a very special wine for the first sip of the new year. Since we are definitely part of the stay at home on New Year’s Eve contingent, we have been known to splurge on this annual tradition.

Without tasting the line, we might have selected the Grande Annee based on the wonderful tasting notes we’ve read and its reputation as one of the truly great Champagnes. It is! And we enjoyed every sip as this wine showed what careful aging can do to add je ne sais quoi to Chardonnay forward Champagne. Making it our sparkler for a new year was tempting.

    Bol-Rose2

But, the Rosé hit our sweet spot. With more pinot in the mix and just the right note of fresh fruit and acidity, it won our hearts.

Make no mistake, we loved all three Bollingers, but sitting here on New Year’s Eve, we know that the Rosé will keep us smiling from the first pop of the cork to the final drip as we hold the bottle upside down over a glass to slide out the last drop.

We’re posting this early so that you have time to buy a bottle if you are tempted by our choice this year.

    DSC_4889 - Version 22014-11-28Tijou Chateau-de-L'Eperonniere-Cremant-de-Loire© 2014 Penny Cherubino

We’re celebrating the arrival of December with an exceptional sparkler. Chateau de l’Eperonniere, Crémant de Loire 2009 is from the vineyards of Mathieu Tijou, the latest in his family to carry on the tradition of winemaking.

    Mathieu-Tijou-2010

Mathieu Tijou (Foreground), Neal Rosenthal (background left)

As with his father, Mathieu has continued to work with importer Neal Rosenthal, a name you will know well from reading our BostonZest wine posts. Through the years, we have come to trust and rely on wines that display the Rosenthal name. And, this Crémant reinforces that claim.

    Photo - Version 22014-11-28Tijou Chateau-de-L'Eperonniere-Cremant-de-Loire© 2014 Penny Cherubino

Penny thinks, “this Cremant is addictive!”

Ed says, “very balanced, and food friendly.”

We had it with Neals Yard Dairy Berkswell (sheeps milk cheese), Landaff (cows milk cheese/aged at Jasper Hill), Parmigiano-Reggiano, and Sardinian parchment crackers.

Penny says, “when you sip, it’s sweet and tart at the same time – usually I taste one followed by other.”

    DSC_4868 - Version 22014-11-28Tijou Chateau-de-L'Eperonniere-Cremant-de-Loire© 2014 Penny Cherubino

One of our sparkling wine/champagne mottos is to “drink slowly and sip through the temperatures,” to experience all the wine has to offer. That advise certainly applies here.

If you’re a Crémant fan, we think you’ll be impressed with this wine. If you’ve never tried a Crémant, this would be a memorable introduction to the sparkler.

Here’s to December! May it be as wonderful as our bottle of Chateau de l’Eperonniere, Crémant de Loire.

  • Greeting November with a Special Treat: Champagne H. Billiot Fils Rosé

When is it time for a treat? Well, since it’s officially November and the holiday season is almost here, we were thinking … why not, now?

    CHE_4730 - Version 22014-10-01-H- Billiot Fils-champagne-rose-grand-cru-Brut-NV-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

It’s never too early to prepare for the festive times ahead. And, what better way to get in the mood than by uncorking an exceptional sparkler.

Anytime we think “special wine,” we look to recommendations from people we’ve come to trust. In this case, seeing the name Terry Theise on a bottle of Champagne at the wine shop meant this H. Billiot Fils Brut Rosé was coming home with us.

    DSC_4192 - Version 22014-10-01-H- Billiot Fils-champagne-rose-grand-cru-Brut-NV-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

It should be said that, although Theise is nothing short of a wine savant, we always advise anyone looking for helpful suggestions to make their own list of importers. And, Terry Theise is a great place to start.

He reminds us that, “Billiots are not filtered …” And that, “Billiot lifts you up on a billowing fountain of fruit. Her wines have marvelous stamina and brightness. They’re hedonistic but not sloppy.”

    CHE_4715 - Version 22014-10-01-H- Billiot Fils-champagne-rose-grand-cru-Brut-NV-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Penny found the first sniff of the Brut Rosé to be “Dry, stern on the nose, but it took a friendlier turn on the tongue.” Ed described, “Vibrant but not overpowering fruit that was balanced and (in the full British sense of the word) lovely!”

We enjoyed the Champagne with goat cheese, onion jam, and Provencal olives. It also matched well with olive oil crackers.

It was also spectacular all by itself as we lingered over every last drop.

    DSC_4288 - Version 22014-10-03-- Billiot FIls-champagne-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

We found our bottle of Champagne H. Billiot Fils Champagne Brut Rosé at Gordon’s Fine Wines & Liquors in Waltham ($54.30 after 15% case discount) – a November treat we will likely repeat for the holidays or perhaps even sooner.

  • Brix Wine Shop Makes Our Nino Franco Dreams Come True!

Last Thursday, we had the opportunity to taste five wines from Nino Franco Spumanti srl and to meet Silvia Franco.

    CHE_4753 - Version 22014-10-02Silvia-Franco-brix-wine-tasting-nino-franco-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

For years we’ve told you of our love for Nino Franco Rustico Prosecco. And, we’ve been unsuccessfully scouting sources for other wines from this vineyard.

Imagine our elation when we were invited to a tasting at Brix Wine Shop that included the opportunity to not only try more of this winery’s sparklers, but also to meet Silvia, in person, after a couple of years of internet communication about her family’s wines.

Brix Hosts Gracious and Hospitable Tastings

They provided everything from the right glassware for sniffing and sipping to an antique copper spittoon for those limiting their alcohol intake. And, this tasting attracted a charming crowd who chatted with both Silvia and among themselves. We were all assisted by a most helpful staff.

    • Nino Franco Primo Franco 2012
    • Nino Franco V. Della Riva San Floriano

Silva Franco Was as Gracious as Brix

The Brix invitation to meet “Prosecco’s Princess Silvia Franco” said, “If the bubbles don’t win you over (which they will), Silvia’s charming personality and in-depth knowledge will captivate you.” And, they were right.

She greeted guests, poured wine, talked wine, answered questions, and signed bottles upon request. Her warm personality and vivacious Italian spirit added as much sparkle to the evening as her wines. We look forward to seeing her again the next time she’s in Boston.

    30 Years of Primo Franco

We had Silvia sign one of our bottles of Primo Franco, a wine named for her father. Later this month, as she and her family celebrate the 30th Vintage of Primo Franco in Valdobbiadene, we’ll open this bottle and toast them here in Boston.

Thanks to the Brix team for making this possible. We recommend that wine lovers sign up for their email announcements of tastings. They have introduced us to other favorite winemakers and wineries over the years.
