Artisan cheese is another reason to visit farmers' markets.

Cheesemakers like Smith's Farmstead Cheese, Narragansett Creamery, Crystal Brook FarmRuggles Hill CreameryFiore di Nonno, and Foxboro Cheese are among the cheese options you can find at Boston area farmers' markets.

Crystal Brook Farm offers a delightful goat cheese picnic lunch. The day we took this photo each bag included a container of their goat cheese with olive oil and herbs de Provence, french bread, trail mix, a plate, napkin, knife, and a dollar-off coupon for the next purchase.

    In season right now!

This is the height of the harvest season. The stone fruit selection is glorious, the vegetables overflow their bins, and you enjoy each bite knowing this-or-that will soon be gone.

    Get Some before it's gone!

Berries, stone fruit, heirloom tomatoes, and local honey – we've begun stockpiling our favorite from Foppema's Farm for winter.

    Coming Soon!

Mums for fall planting, herbs for window sills, pumpkins, winter squash, late season apples.

Follow all of our Local Food/Farmers' Market  and At The Market reports.

  • Cheese Alert: Bethmale Chèvre

Last Saturday, we stopped by Bacco's Wine & Cheese to add a little something to our weekend cheese tray and discovered Bethmale Chèvre.

My first request was for something sheepy, and shop owner Bob Bacco suggested one of our all-time favorite sheep's milk cheeses, Berkswell

    IMG_6229 - Version 22013-04-06-bethmale-cherve- bacco's-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Since he seemed to have zeroed-in on our taste, I asked him to recommend a goat cheese. He handed over a slice of this semi-soft, lacy beauty that tasted like heaven. Yes, a piece of that was certainly going home with us.

Lesson: Always ask your cheesemonger for suggestions!

Do you let your cheesemonger suggest new cheeses or stick to your old favorites?

    What's your current cheese crush?

    IMG_6227 - Version 22013-04-06-bethmale-cherve- bacco's-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

This is a cheese that seems to get better with every bite. The first nibble fills your mouth with deep flavor and the second taste has you craving more. As you can see in the top photo, it slices beautifully with a cheese plane that yields lovely, long, irresistible shavings.

    IMG_6230 - Version 22013-04-06-bethmale-cherve- bacco's-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Janet Fletcher of the San Francisco Chronicle discovered this cheese long before most other cheese fans. She said, "The aroma is nutty and the flavor mellow and sweet, not remotely chalky or goaty. I have a hard time imagining anyone not liking this cheese." We agree!

And, here are other items from our Cheese Tray!

What's on your Cheese Shopping List? Here are some great books about cheese. These make wonderful gifts for a Cheese Lover. And, when you shop Amazon from here, they put some coins in our tip jar.

  • This Meatloaf Began at The Butcherie in Brookline

    DSC_2371 - Version 22013-03-01-boston-public-garden-lagoon-haysteck-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Yes, we know The Butcherie in Brookline is a kosher market. The meat in the loaf is veal and beef from their stock. The bacon on top, we already had on hand.

If Penny isn't going to grind her own meat, she's fussy about the quality and handling. The product from the Butcherie was treated with respect, formed into little crown shapes, and stocked in a single layer so that the ground meat wasn't pressed down. That makes it possible to keep the mixture from being overworked, and she thinks it helps create a lighter meatloaf.

    CHE_2188 - Version 22013-02-26-Meatloaf-bostonzest-veal-beef-buthcerie-brookline-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

When she bought this, Penny was out photographing some of her favorite places to shop for kosher, Russian, and Eastern European food for her "Fresh & Local" newspaper column. It was a good reminder to get back to some of the places that have provided good products in the past. The Butcherie is one of them.

Many of us have begun to buy kosher chicken in more mainstream markets. But, why not extend that quality control to the other meats that will be sold by kosher markets. It's also great to see items like lamb neck right in the meat case.

They also sell kosher wine, cheese, grocery, deli, and party platters. Visit the next time you're in the area. Combine it with a trip to the Brookline Winter Farmers' Market (still going on), Brookline Summer Farmers' Market, or some great pizza at Otto Pizza, all nearby.

Culture: The Word on Cheese is our Friday Link. If you're like me, you scan your twitter feed and always stop when you see certain icons. A tweet from Culture Cheese Magazine always slows me down.

They not only keep me informed about cheese, but they also have great taste in related topics and stay on top of the food scene.

When you explore the site, make sure you bookmark their "Cheese Library." It's a resource you can use anytime you come across a new cheese. And, the search option can help you find cheese by any number of criteria. I love it for locating cheese from a specific country when we're doing a themed meal.

And, just in case all of this isn't reason enough to enjoy and support this resource, they are a Massachusetts business!
