Special Toys for Special Purposes for Your Sunday Dog

Like many terriers, our Westie Poppy is a strong chewer. That means we don't leave her alone with something she might be able to destroy and chew into a choking hazard. Kong Extreme toys have been our answer.

Even as a tiny pup, Poppy could destroy a regular Kong in a sitting. Here she was in her exercise pen with her Kong Extreme chew.

To address the separation anxiety she had as a pup, we stuffed a Kong with goat cheese and put it in the crate with her when we left her alone. To this day, she only gets this toy when she’s in her crate and she loves it each time she's offered one. Even when we return, she grabs it and runs happily around the place tossing and bouncing it. Now she runs to her crate when we hold up a Kong.

Poppy also loves squeaky toys but when she was young, she only had access to those under supervision.

There are a number of comfort toys on the market to help puppies adjust to their new homes, address separation anxiety, or comfort a dog in a strange setting. Our first dog Sassy came to us with three knotted hand towels that had been slept on, played with, and generally embedded with the scent of her mother and littermates.

This worked so well that we've used the same trick over the years for both rescue dogs and our own pups.

Duchess Poppy Speaks to the People

As you may have noticed our little Westie, Duchess Poppy Whitehead, can be a bossy little bit.

In part, that's because she was named after "Duchess Poppy" a very eccentric character in E.F Benson's Mapp and Lucia novels. (She's also named for the "POP" of the cork when we open a bottle of sparkling wine.)

After discovering this wonderful podium in Pemberton Square, we couldn't resist letting Poppy have a few moments to address the people as they passed by.

Never fear, she was not up there by herself. Ed was hiding right below ready to grab her in case she forgot where she was in her excitement of her address to the masses.

While we took this photo in fun, we are doing some serious research on this piece of public art for a feature article. Watch for more about that in an upcoming post.

Let Your Sunday Dog Take the Lead

Regular readers know that Ed and I are both big proponents of leash laws and keeping your dog under your control. However, this doesn’t mean that you never let your dog do what he or she wants to do within your circle of guidance.

Off leash on a dog-friendly beach like this one in Provincetown Harbor is just one way you can let your dog lead the way. But only if your dog plays well with others and will reliably return to you when called.

Some days our Poppy doesn’t want to walk along our usual route. She wants to see and smell something new. Even as a young pup, she loved to follow her nose. Sometimes we let her lead the way. She has a change of scene, and so do we.

Ed is an extremely patient person and is much better at this than I am. Our dogs have all enjoyed long, leisurely walks where he has allowed them to decide which way to turn at every corner or which direction to take at the start of a beach walk.

Once, in Provincetown, he was following along as our first Westie Sassy took him down the beach to Truro because she just wanted to keep going. When he walks Poppy alone, I’ll often get a report of where she wanted to go and what they saw along the way.

Paying attention to what your dog is trying to communicate can be smart. As summer temperatures rise, your dog may try to turn for home as a way of telling you he’s hot, tired, and doesn’t want to be outside any longer. Or, he might pull to reach a puddle or water supply as a way of telling you he’s thirsty. Paying attention and occasionally letting the dog lead can be a good thing for both of you.

Poppy Meets a Celebrity Snowman

Poppy is unusual for a Westie because she can be somewhat shy. So meeting Boston’s latest celebrity was a bit of a challenge for her.

Ed reassured Poppy that the giant snowman on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall was friendly, but she was careful in her approach and more comfortable with his tiny friend.

If he hadn’t beem so tall, our vegetable loving pup might have sniffed out that carrot hiding under his scarf. Then, she would’ve joined small snow critter on his side and tried to climb to the prize.

This big guy and a scattering of other snow people that appeared after Mother Nature provided area artists with the perfect snow sculpting material.

This smiling, caped superhero (yes, he was wearing a cape) was surrounded by paparazzi each time we passed and quickly became the talk of twitter and other social media sites. Locals and tourists alike stopped to take a photo with him.

"Autumn is the best season in which to sniff, for this is the season of universal pungency."
