We think there is model potential in this little dog. When we asked for a photo, Little Sky graciously sat perfectly still next to Lucy Stone on the Boston Women's Memorial and showed us what she feels is the best side of her pretty face.

For the third time in 6 months, I’ve been part of three different groups that have managed to capture a loose dog on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall. In two cases, no one was with the dog. In the third, the dog had broken free from a prong collar.
Despite the number of dogs I see off leash in our parks, I still look around to see if I can determine if there is a scofflaw with the dog or if the dog is an escapee.
In the case of a pretty Bichon Frise, a group effort caught her and this mesh water bottle holder and its strap became a temporary leash. A call to the phone number on her tag revealed that her person did not know she was missing. He surmised she must have slipped out when a guest left the house.
My most recent stray was a small, mixed breed. A gentleman called the dog to him and gained control of the collar. The pooch had a license but no owner ID, so a call was placed to Animal Control. I managed to get a length of cable from a passing landscaper and quickly attached it as a makeshift leash.
A neighbor said he would wait with the dog. I went on my way and alerted dog walkers of the pup’s location in case they saw someone searching for a lost animal. When I saw the man again, he reported that the family came to claim the pup.
In the third instance, another neighbor was trying to catch a rather aggressive, large, mixed breed. This dog had broken free from a prong collar. I took control of the dog that belonged to my neighbor so he would have two hands to work with and so his dog would be safe from the growling, snapping escapee.
With no hope of getting the pinch collar back on the pooch, we turned the dog's leash into a noose and tried to lasso the animal. We offered treats to tempt the dog, but nothing was working. I had an appointment and had to leave before animal control arrived. Later I learned a young man had joined the fray and was able to hold the dog by its ruff long enough to get the leash around its neck.
None of us is a perfect guardian and we’ve all had scary near-escape moments. But there are things you can do to help prevent these situations and to be prepared when you encounter one.
With an anxious dog like our Poppy, extra safety is a priority when we're outside. In addition to her Freedom No-Pull Dog Training Harness (in the photo above) we have a strap connecting her collar to a leash.
With the vast number of off leash dogs I see each day, I now carry an inexpensive slip leash with the pickup bags that are always in my pocket.
Leash or confine your dog when people are coming and going from your home. Especially if a door leading to outdoors is available.
Training is essential. I've been watching puppy Howie (above) grow up and seen how training is paying off. See how nicely he sits and waits when asked. And notice the gentle foot on his leash helping him obey and earn, "Good Boy" praise.
A British coalition headed by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has called for an end to the sale and use of both shock collars and pinch or prong collars. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve seen someone trying to get one of the latter back on a dog after the dog has broken free.
Finally, keep your dog on a short, strong leash with a secure collar or harness. If you have a dog with aggression or fear issues, add a second safety connection.

With Halloween approaching, cats come to mind. Not just because they are symbols of the holiday, but also because this can be a dangerous time for cats and dogs.

Tempted by Treats
Having extra candy and treats around for your family, holiday party, or trick-or-treaters can pose a danger to your pets. Chocolate in all forms, but especially the darkest chocolate, can cause symptoms ranging from gastrointestinal upset to seizures.
The ASPCA reminds us that, “Candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can be poisonous to dogs. Even small amounts of xylitol sweetener can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar which leads to depression, lack of coordination, and seizures.”
Even holiday decorations, like pumpkins and dried corn, can give your pet an upset tummy, if they try to dine on them. And, large pieces of these items, ribbons, and wrappers that are part of the decor can be hazards for choking or intestinal blockages.

Stressed Out Playing Dress Up
There are a few pets who are total hams and will love wearing a Halloween costume. For many others it can be stressful. Choose costumes with care and give your dog or cat time to adjust before the big party. If your pet shows signs of stress, consider a t-shirt or jacket style costume that leaves the head and ears free. Or, if your beast has stage fright, you wear the costume and let your dog or cat be an accessory.

Another ASPCA reminder concerns the design and fit of holiday finery. “Take a closer look at your pet’s costume and make sure it does not have small, dangling or easily chewed-off pieces that he could choke on. Also, ill-fitting outfits can get twisted on external objects or your pet, leading to injury.”

Trick-or-treaters in costume can frighten an otherwise well-mannered pet. If you love to dress up to answer the call of trick-or-treaters, you could scare your pet. And, when a pet is frightened, it can and will do the unexpected.
With doors opening and closing to admit partygoers or to hand out treats, there are many opportunities for a gentle homebody – let alone the veteran escape artist – to make a break for it.
Consider tucking your dog or cat away in a separate room with a favorite bed or blanket while you host Halloween visitors.
If you don’t normally keep ID on your dog or cat when they are indoors, this next week might be a good time to add that extra precaution to your Halloween safety checklist.

Horror stories of animal cruelty to cats crop up every Halloween season. There are dozens of reasons cats should be kept indoors any time of the year. City cats are in danger from other animals, poisons like antifreeze, and bait set for rodents. Wandering the streets they can be hit by cars, become trapped in odd spaces, and be exposed to diseases and parasites from feral cats.
Some of the saddest signs around the neighborhood are the ones posted for lost cats. When you see one, you look around and worry about where that tiny creature may be hiding – alone and afraid.
Poison Control
Finally, if you think your dog or cat has eaten something that may have poisoned it, call the Animal Poison Control Hotline at 1-888-426-4435. This is a 24/7 poison hotline. A fee is required to use this service, but fast action could save the life of the pet you love.

Whether your furry pals are traveling with you or staying with friends for the holidays, make whatever reservations you will need as soon as possible.
Pet sitter and boarding kennel schedules can fill up fast for the holiday season. Airlines limit the number of pets in the cabin and pet-friendly lodgings might have no vacancies, if you wait too long.
Poppy usually travels with us and is packed and ready to go at a moments notice when we find a vacancy at one of our favorite vacation spots that welcome our whole family of three.
Friends & Family Deserve Notice Too
Even informal agreements with family, friends, and other pet lovers for care while you travel should be arranged well in advance to ensure a visitor will fit with their holiday plans. If you’re counting on Mom or Dad to take Fluffy while you are away, check now to see if that feline visitor is welcome this year.
We often meet dogs in the parks who are “grandpups” visiting their “grandparents.” If you have a family member or friend who shares your pet care values and is willing to take your place while you travel, you’re fortunate.

During a routine checkup, does your veterinarian ask about behavioral issues your animal may be having? If they don’t ask, you should tell.
This is one of our Poppy's worried looks. She tends to be a bit of a nervous Nellie and this is always a topic of conversation with her vet.
Some things that we, as animal guardians, may think of as behavioral issues can be symptoms of a physical problem. Other concerns may be ones that your veterinarian may be ready, able, and willing to help you correct with expert guidance or, in some cases, medications.
Poppy has just had a checkup with a clean bill of health so we know her anxious looks are not from pain or illness.
Just as you may be a bit grumpy if you are in pain, your dog or cat may misbehave because something is hurting. Since some animals try to hide signs of weakness, such as pain, this can be an important lead that you should investigate.
Any sudden change in behavior is worth noting and if it continues, see a professional. Jumpiness in an animal could be a sign they are losing eyesight or hearing and that your approach is startling them.
Other medical causes of unusual behavior are arthritis, hip dysplasia, luxating patella, sore teeth, thyroid problems, epilepsy/seizures, ear infections, digestive issues, skin or environmental allergies, yeast infections, and cancer. Kidney or liver disease can result in toxins in the bloodstream. And, sadly, the aging process sometimes results in cognitive decline which can change your animal’s personality.
We keep log books on all aspects of Poppy's life.
Your description of the behavior should be comprehensive. Keep a log before you speak with the medical team. Note what the animal is doing, how often, any possible changes in your home that might be impacting the dog or cat, and what you have tried to do to correct the behavior.
Once any medical causes are ruled out and any medical treatment is completed, you may still have to address some residual issues. Ask for options starting with the simplest changes before moving on to more serious remedies. Whenever possible, begin with training that you can try at home.
Should the veterinarian suggest medication, ask for the mildest option first. Finally, before you resort to stronger methods, ask for a referral to a veterinary behaviorist. This would be either a veterinarian with advanced training who is diplomate certified by the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists (DACVB) or a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA.)

Every year around this time, I find myself "sniffing-up" with a lot of new members of my Boston Canine Court. So every year I try to let them, and the rest of the dogs who are new to Boston, know what they should put on the to-do list of their human servants.
Just like you have to make sure your chauffeur has a valid driver's license, you have to be sure one of your human staff members gets you a Boston dog license (if Boston is your main residence and you are more than six months old).
You can sit them down at a computer and send them to the Animal Care and Control page for more information. Here is the link for your secretary to get your license done on line.
Please don't come running up to me on one of those long, thin, dangerous strings with a pulley. I'm a bit shy and I don't trust those things. You'll make me stamp my little paw down!
Boston's leash law is clearly stated on the city’s site, “When your dog is off your property, it must be on a leash.” City ordinance calls for a leash of 10-feet or less. That makes most retractable leashes technically illegal in Boston. If a person tries to attach one to you, growl at them.
One more interesting aspect of Boston’s dog rules is that while out with you, your retainers, if asked, must be able to show that they are carrying something to pick up dog waste. This makes city dog walks a prime reason to attach a roll of pick-up bags
Even if your people use recycled bags to do the majority of clean ups, the roll will give them a back up supply if you are stopped after your business is done, but the walk isn’t.

I must admit, I'm not much of a dog park dog. I prefer a nice chat on a park bench or a picnic lunch under a shady tree.
But, for those who like to romp, the legal exceptions to the leash law are: the “official off-leash hours” on the Boston Common, and inside the fences at dog parks like Peter’s Park in the South End, DeFilippo Park in the North End, and Ronan Park in Dorchester.
The one bit of guidance you must be sure your humans note is that Angell Animal Medical Center Emergency Services are available, as they say, “… every day of the year, 24 hours each day.” My people have their number on all our cell phones in case of an emergency. And it can't hurt to have your chauffeur practice a drive to the location so he or she will know where you are going in a stressful time. You don't want to be giving the driver directions if you have an upset tummy.
