Duchess Poppy’s Shopping Spree in Provincetown

There are some requests on a girl's shopping list that call for destination shopping. Our little Duchess Poppy had her personal assistant prepare a memorandum with the goods she would be seeking on our last trip to Provincetown.

She insisted she needed a new tiara for the more formal occasions on her appointment calendar in the upcoming holiday season. And, she wanted a red feather boa made in her size and of excellent quality.

After trips up and down Commercial Street, in and out of many shops, she went into four-paw braking as a shopkeeper arranged a display of boas in front of a little shop next to the Aquarium Market Place.

She and Ed sat on the bench provided for Duchesses and their retainers while I explored the tiny shop and carried items out for her approval.

There was no question in her mind that the scarf size boa was precisely what she had in mind. She adores it! However, most of the tiaras presented were far too large and a bit too glittery for her taste.

When the shopkeeper discovered that the tiara was not for one of the humans in the family but for our tiny Duchess, she quickly went to her stock of "special products for special customers" and came out with the perfect headpiece for our little Scottish Royal.

Poppy was so pleased with the success of this shopping foray that she granted us a photo session in her new finery. As you can see by the second photo, we took a bit too long and the Most Noble Poppy: Duchess of Whitehead took on one of her Maggie Smith as Dowager Countess of Grantham "I am no longer pleased," poses.

Sunday Dog “Chewie” Is Irresistible!

Have you ever seen a dog that you just can’t take your eyes off? A pooch that, if he could talk would say, “Hi, don’t you want to pat me?”

His name is Chewie, short for Chewbacca, the fiercely loyal co-pilot of Star Wars fame.

While we can see the facial hair resemblance, no one would ever mistake this cute Lhasa Apso for a Wookiee.

We met our Chewie while out for a walk on only his third day in Boston. Although he’s just four months old, this little guy is already a charmer who loves to play.

However, at this point in his puppyhood, Chewie does tend to have irregular sleeping hours, to which his bleary-eyed family is learning to adapt.

Before we said goodbye, we promised to introduce this little bundle of energy to another young, 4-legged neighbor named Leia (really), a meeting that could help tire out both of them.

Provincetown Is a Dogtown

One of the things we love about Provincetown is that it is a dogtown. We enjoy watching and meeting the dogs that are welcomed by this small town at the end of the land.

You'll see them in packs like this band of Bulldogs.

You'll see them in pairs like these Corgis – a popular breed with the locals.

They come large enough to invite stares from passersby.

Some are moving right along as they help run errands.

Others want everyone to slow down so they can stop and smell the flowers.

Some are visiting while others hold full time jobs as greeters at local businesses.

Some like this young pup have favorite businesses they can't wait to enter. Fortunately, many shops welcome dogs, but we always ask.

And, almost every Provincetown dog loves a good beach walk.

We highly recommend this lovely place for a fall escape. Each year, more places stay open for a longer season. Here is a link to some dog friendly spots from the wonderful folks at Pilgrim Bark Park.

Provincetown Is a Dogtown

One of the things we love about Provincetown is that it is a dogtown. We enjoy watching and meeting the dogs that are welcomed by this small town at the end of the land.

Duchess Poppy Speaks to the People

As you may have noticed our little Westie, Duchess Poppy Whitehead, can be a bossy little bit.

In part, that's because she was named after "Duchess Poppy" a very eccentric character in E.F Benson's Mapp and Lucia novels. (She's also named for the "POP" of the cork when we open a bottle of sparkling wine.)

After discovering this wonderful podium in Pemberton Square, we couldn't resist letting Poppy have a few moments to address the people as they passed by.

Never fear, she was not up there by herself. Ed was hiding right below ready to grab her in case she forgot where she was in her excitement of her address to the masses.

While we took this photo in fun, we are doing some serious research on this piece of public art for a feature article. Watch for more about that in an upcoming post.

Sherlock Bones: Cafe Dog in Training

We met little Sherlock, a dashing poodle mix, at a sidewalk cafe that will remain unnamed to protect it from the dog haters.

He and the gentleman with him were about to leave an ideal table where a good dog could sit on the sidewalk while the human half of the team could dine at a table.

At six months old, Sherlock or Sherlock Bones, as some of his friends and fans call him, has already learned that the primary task of a great cafe dog is to charm all the people around you. He even offered his paws to Penny for a dance. She was completely smitten with this fellow.

He was still getting a few gentle sit reminders from the other half of the cafe team but, before long, we were sure that touch would be replaced by a hand signal to cue this poodle-smart pup to park his hind end on the bricks.

When little Prince Charming realized that we were hoping to slip into his table, he tugged his person toward a nearby park.

Thanks Sherlock! We hope you had a nice walk and perhaps a bit of puppy play while we were enjoying lunch. We look forward to running into you again.

Sherlock Bones: Cafe Dog in Training

These Vizslas Hunt Graffiti: Say Hello to Sasha & Finn!

Sasha and Finn have a mission when they go out for a walk. These proud Vizslas help their person Michael Fenter hunt down and remove graffiti from their neighborhood.

This trio work with the Neighborhood Association of the Back Bay's Graffiti Busters. Actually, the dogs offered companionship and moral support while Michael did the hard work of cleaning black paint off this utility box.

When the graffiti kit on wheels stays home, you can be sure that their 5 daily walks will result in shopping bags of litter picked up along the way. Whenever they are out and about, they take care of their own business and do their share of volunteer work.

What you can do!

If this crew makes you wish you were doing more to help your neighbors on your dog walks, here are some of the things that you can do.

Join your neighborhood association or park group and volunteer a bit of your time. There are many things you can do while walking with dogs. (We didn't find a great list of Boston's neighborhood associations and park groups so we are working on one for a future post. If you belong to one please add a link in the comments below, Tweet it to @BostonZest ,or send us an email.)

Report graffiti (and other problems the city needs to correct) with a call to the 311 line, at tweet to @bos311, or by using the 311 app. Details at that link.

Grab an extra pick-up bag and use it to pick-up litter along the your route. (Remember last week we told you about Zeus and his person who is also a litter buster!)

Learn what you need to know to keep watch for Dutch Elm Disease or Asian Longhorned Beetles.

Report damage to statues or park fixtures to the Parks Department. In the case of the Commonwealth Avenue Mall, the Public Garden, or the Boston Common, you can also report those issues to the Friends of the Public Garden.

Stop and say thank you to volunteers like these when you see them doing good work around your area.

By the time we returned from our walk, the graffiti team was gone, the area was clean, and the utility box was ready for repainting the next day. We wanted to give the tip of our Sunday Dog hat to these great neighbors.
