  • This Wine Chiller Works for Both Champagne & Skinny Bottles

We love this wine chiller! We found it when we were searching for a larger chiller for our beloved sparkling wine bottles. It's called a Rapid Ice Champagne Cooler.

    DSC_3728 - Version 22014-08-27wine-chiller-for-champagne-or-thin-bottles-© 2011 Penny Cherubino (1)

We were delighted when we realized it was also the perfect chiller for oddly shaped and skinny wine bottles like the rosé shown in the photo above. That little drawstring with a button lock lets you snug the chiller tightly around the neck of any bottle. That means you can lift and pour without removing the bottle from the sleeve.

We like it so much, we've bought a second one. That means it can make a wonderful gift for a host or hostess or a thank you gift for a wine lover. Even if someone has one, they can use another!

  • Thanks to the Flower People

We walk a lot, miles and miles each week. And, as we walk, we enjoy the work of all the people who bring brilliant color to Boston neighborhoods with their flower power. Walking and enjoying the gardens is free fun for many Boston residents and visitors.

    IMG_7564 - Version 22014-08-07morning-glory-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

This glorious morning glory is in a friend's front yard. I remember one year when she was so disappointed because her morning glory vines didn't bloom. They made up for it this year with an explosion of velvety purple trumpets.

The pale pink of these geraniums popped against the brick of a South End townhouse where someone had a great sense of floral design.

    IMG_7568 - Version 22014-08-07Hydrangea- boston-back bay-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

It was a hard year for hydrangeas. Some didn't bloom at all after the winter deep freeze. It makes me wonder about the special care this one had at the hands of a dedicated gardener. This bloom on the shady side of Commonweatlh Aveune was the size of a large cabbage.

Thanks to all who labor in gardens and add to the scene as neighbors and vistors enjoy walking the residential streets of Boston.

    CHE_3824 - Version 22014-07-24-fenders-seawall-hull-ma-harbor-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

I love the look of these bulbous fenders on the seawall at Steamboat Wharf Marina in Hull. The area around Hull and Nantasket Beach is a great photography destination.

From 1818 to 1929, steamboats brought Bostonians to the beach at Nantasket for the day or for a stay in one of the hotels that lined the waterfront.

There is summer ferry service today but the landing is not as close as these boats land about two miles from the beach. This ferry is managed by the town of Hull and was out of service for repairs through August 10th. It should be back in service now. You can get updates on the town's website.

  • Finding Pros for Your Dog in Boston: Veterinarians and Groomers

As we meet new neighbors with dogs, the first questions people ask are about groomers and veterinarians. We recommend that you do exactly the same thing. Chat with dog families about their experiences with the professionals they have used and make your decisions based on the raves and boos you hear.

      DSC_8069 - Version 22013-09-05poppy-well-groomed-westie-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

    Well Groomed

Whenever Poppy is out and about and recently groomed, we're always happy when someone says she looks beautiful and asks where we take her. Unfortunately, her team at Pawsh Dog Boutique and Salon has a waiting list for new clients. For this reason, we do ask other people about the groomers they use, so that we might be able to direct folks to other high quality places.

When you interview a groomer ask to see the entire facility. You should see where your dog will be washed, trimmed, and held until you are reunited. Make certain you communicate what you are expecting from the shop. Westies are often hand stripped instead of clipped. There are not many people aside from show dog groomers who do this and many shops will clip a Westie into a standard terrier trim or even give it a spaniel skirt.

This is Bear who happens to live with his veterinarian!

    Veterinary Services

Today, there are more choices to consider when deciding on a primary care veterinarian for your animals. You can opt for one of the larger animal hospitals with a full range of services like Angell Animal Medical Center. We like knowing that while our own vet may not always be on duty, the team that works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week will take care of us in any emergency.

You can choose a smaller, local veterinary practice in your neighborhood. It can be nice to walk by and stop in occasionally just to get a treat or weigh your dog.

You can select a traveling vet who makes home visits and will come to you when you need care. This can be wonderful for cats and for frail elder dogs.

And, today, you can seek out a wholistic veterinarian who combines a full traditional veterinary education with an openess to and additional training in alternative medical practices.

Ask your friends and neighbors for a recommendation. Inquire about the philosophy of the practice and ask about the prices. You might decide to use some specialized services like dental cleanings at a place that can offer a lower price by setting up a dedicated team.

Finding the right veterinarian and groomer may take some time and effort, but you and your pup are worth it.

  • Tidbits About William Lloyd Garrison & His Statue on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall

William Lloyd Garrison (1805–1879) was a man of strong words, and strong words are used to describe him – reformer, activist, abolitionist.

    DSC_3647 - Version 22014-08-23-William-lloyd-garrison-statue-boston-commonwealth-avenue-mall© 2011 Penny Cherubino (1)

His statue, on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall near Dartmouth Street, is inscribed with one of his powerful statements. “I am in earnest – I will not equivocate – I will not excuse – I will not retreat a single inch- and I will be heard!”

    Garrison’s Abolitionist Advocacy

In his 1913 biography of Garrison, John Jay Chapman wrote, “From the moment he founded the Liberator he was the strongest man in America. He was affected in his thought by no one. What he was thinking, all men were destined to think.”

Chapman’s book has been called “adulatory.” Later writers, like Gilbert Hobbs Barnes, questioned Garrison’s extremism, saying it had contributed to a polarization that led to the Civil War.

In 1835, sentiment in Boston was so strong that at one point a mob chased Garrison through the streets threatening to lynch him. He was rescued by then Mayor Lyman and spent the night sheltered in the Leverett Street Jail.

    DSC_3639 - Version 32014-08-23-William-lloyd-garrison-statue-boston-commonwealth-avenue-mall© 2011 Penny Cherubino

    Garrison championed causes beyond abolition.

He was a lifelong supporter of the temperance movement.

He might have enjoyed seeing Lucy Stone honored on the Boston Women’s Memorial two blocks from his statue. He is said to have been influenced by her ideas, and became her ally in the Women’s Suffrage Movement.

Today, Garrison is seen as a role model for those who embody the principles he espoused. The Museum of African American History’s “Living Legends Awards” recipients are given a replica of a silver cup that was presented to William Lloyd Garrison in 1833 by black community leaders.

    The Garrison Statue

In The City Observed: Boston, Donlyn Lyndon wrote a vivid description of the Garrison sculpture. “It’s larger than life, relaxed but attentive, with piles of loose papers and a thick book under a comfortable-looking armchair, as if he were still in his publishing office, immersed in work, just leaning back for a moment to have a word with a visitor.”

    DSC_3646 - Version 22014-08-23-William-lloyd-garrison-statue-boston-commonwealth-avenue-mall© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Olin Levi Warner created the sculpture in 1885. “Although most of his works were portraits, the superb statue of William Lloyd Garrison in Boston and the impressive doors for the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., testify to the wide range of his abilities,” says Warner’s Smithsonian American Art Museum biography.

The statue bears a true resemblance to photographs of Garrison. Warner is said to have used a life mask created by another sculptor, John Rogers, when Garrison was about age 63.

Here is a photograph of that life mask from the New York Public Library Collection.

The Boston Public Library has a Garrison Death Mask that was on exhibit during the Homefront Exhibition. The library description of this item follows:

"WILLIAM LLOYD GARRISON, Death Mask. 1879.

Death masks–plaster or wax casts made of a person’s face soon after death–saw a popular revival in the 19th century. Generally created for the wealthy or for famous artists, writers, and political figures such as Garrison, death masks were often used as models for future portraits and busts. BPL Rare Books & Manuscripts Department"

Does the Statue look like Garrison?

    Garrison portrait

Here's a portrait photograph of the man taken by "Warren's Portraits, 465 Washington St., Boston" and now in the New York Public Library Collection.

The Smithsonian’s report on this work of art says, “The statue was presented to the City by a group of Boston citizens. The group, established in 1879, included Ralph Waldo Emerson, Wendell Phillips, Samuel Cobb, and William Endicott Jr.” They note that the base was designed by John W. Wells of the McKim, Mead and White architectural firm.

    Restoration in 2005

The Garrison sculpture was restored in 2005 as part of the Friends of the Public Garden sculpture restoration and maintenance program. That same year, 150 Garrison descendants held a reunion to honor the 200th anniversary of his birth.

  • Help Solve the Mystery of This Chestnut Street Light

Do you know anything about this streetlight at the corner of Chestnut Street and Spruce Street in Beacon Hill?

    PMC_8434 - Version 22014-07-12bhr atd-chestnut sign- clue© 2011 Penny Cherubino

It has the street name on one of the glass panels. In Penny's weekly Beacon Hill Times Attention to Detail newspaper column, she gives readers a close up photo of a clue in the neighborhood. They have a week to figure out where that detail appears and the answer is in the next week's paper along with a tidbit of information about the building or item shown. She also invites readers to suggest details to use.

Recently, a Beacon Hill Times reader submitted the location of this light and asked, ”Do you have any history or know if there are/were other lamp posts with signage like this?”

Even a call to Dave Rooney, the man in City Hall who knows the most about street lights, did not solve the mystery. So, Penny tossed the question out to the newspaper readers, but so far no one has responded.

  • Latte vs Cafe Cortado: Which Is Your Perfect Drink?

    5701141058_088d979534_b

Penny discovered cafe cortados at the Wired Puppy on Newbury Street. She was trying to order a latte with less milk, but more milk than an espresso macchiato.

Update: September 2015: we don't know why this post has brought many new readers to this site but we are happy to say, "Welcome." We hope you'll explore a bit and find more topics that we have covered that you enjoy.

As she described what she wanted, the barista offered a cafe cortado as the drink that fit her description. Halfway through her first glass, she decided that her days of ordering lattes were over and the hunt for more cortado perfection was on.

According to Wikipedia, "The word cortado is the past participle of the Spanish verb cortar (to cut)." In the case of the espresso drink, it is espresso cut with an equal amount of steamed milk.

    IMG_7582 - Version 22014-08-23cortado-espresso-drink-thinking-cup-boston-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

When two cortados to go were ordered at Thinking Cup on Tremont, the person at the register said, "those are the best!" And the barista gave a nod and a smile when he saw them come up on his order screen.

Penny braved one attempt to order the drink at Starbucks. The order taker decided it was a wet cafe macchiato. (Apparently, the chain has no way to request half steamed milk and half expresso although the barista was within reach of the cashier and might have taken oral instructions.) The result was dreadful and Penny dumped it after a couple of sips. She should have known better.

    PC2_0520 - Version 22013-09-26-cafe-cortado-thinking-cup-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

This is a drink to order at an independent coffee shop with well-trained baristas. Having excellent coffee beans as a starting point, like the Stumptown at Thinking Cup or the carefully selected Organic Direct Trade Specialty Coffees at Wired Puppy, is essential in a drink with less milk to mask lesser beans.

Do you try different espresso drinks? What's your favorite?

What's on your food lover's shopping list?

  • Welcome to Boston Dog Lovers: What You Need to Know…

Each year around this time, we welcome a pack of new pups to the city. We have checked the links and updated this post for 2017.

Now that most of the families with dogs have settled into their Boston homes, we want to say hello and help them find out what they need to know about having a dog in Boston.

    6a00e54fc42bb8883401a73dcd37c8970d-800wi

Miss Maudie was less then 6-months-old when she posed for this photo.

    Legal Matters

Massachusetts state law requires that any dog more than 6-months-old must be licensed. In Boston, you can pick up a license at City Hall or download an application online from the Animal Care and Control page on the city website.

Boston's leash law is clearly stated on the city’s site, “When your dog is off your property, it must be on a leash.” City ordinance calls for a leash of 10-feet or less. That makes most retractable leashes technically illegal in Boston.

    6a00e54fc42bb88834019102df04cf970c-800wi

Felix prefers a leather leash or halter for his walks around the Back Bay.

Legal exceptions to the leash law are the “official off-leash hours” on the Boston Common, and inside the fences at dog parks like Peter’s Park in the South End and Ronan Park in Dorchester.

One more interesting aspect of Boston’s dog rules is that while out with your pup, if asked, you must be able to show that you are carrying something to pick up dog waste. This makes city dog walks a prime reason to attach a roll of pick-up bags to your leash.

Even if you use recycled bags to do the majority of your clean ups, the roll will give you back up supplies if you are stopped after your dog’s business is done, but the walk isn’t.

    Emercency Services

The one bit of guidance we do give to any dog family is that Angell Animal Medical Center Emergency Services are available, as they say, “…every day of the year, 24 hours each day.” We keep their number on our cell phones in case of an emergency. And, it can't hurt to take a ride to the location so you will know where you are going in a stressful time.

On upcoming Sundays, we'll fill you in on a few more things you might like to know about taking care of, and having fun with, your dog in Boston. And, if you have a great Sunday Dog you'd like us to feature, let us know in the comments below.

  • Discussion on Teaching Life Skills, Like Cooking – Our Friday Link

I had already clicked over to National Geographic to read their post, Bring Back Home Economics: Three Food Writers on Teaching People to Cook, when I saw that one of the food writers taking part in this brainstorming session was Boston's own maven of many things food, Jacqueline Church. That gave the discussion great credibility.

    6279527347_2e4e00ccae_z

Once upon a time, students at Boston schools learned life skills like cooking. The photo above, from the Boston Public Library Collection, is of girls at the Everett School in th 1890s. (I loved the old home economics photos in the National Georgraphic piece, so I went hunting for some local versions.)

Today, we have many adults who don't know how to feed themselves and resort to buying highly processed food and fast food that damages their health.

    6280047836_c934fd1d8a_z

With each successive generation, fewer people have the skills these eight young women were gaining in the Boston Public Schools. (Photo from the Boston Public Library Collection.)

    13765364583_6515b69d98_z

Or, this group of boys identified as being part of "An experiment of Miss Fuller's: boys' cooking class." (This is from the City of Boston Archives and is circa 1898-1899.)

    Image

Here's Jacqueline Church, a modern woman with a modern approach to teaching cooking skills.

If you cook, how did you learn? Are you a confident shopper? Are you feeding yourself in a way that is keeping you healthy or that addresses the health issues that concern you?

If cooking and feeding yourself is a goal you'd like to set for yourself, consider consulting with a professional like Jacqueline. Here is a link to her site where she explains how you can gain Kitchen Confidence.

Just as you might want to consult with a personal trainer to learn proper exercise techniques to achieve your fitness goals, you can turn to a cooking coach to "learn the skills you'll use for a lifetime," as Jacqueline says.

By the way, here is Jacqueline's own follow up post to the National Geographic conversation with a cooking lesson!
