  • Here’s a Peek at a Back Bay Hidden Garden

Have you ever wondered about those gardens behind the walls along the Back Bay Alleys? We were dinner guests of a friend with a charming walled, English-style garden in the rear of his home.

    IMG_7671

Penny has always been a fan of green and white gardens, especially those that are used the most in the evening. This corner is a great example of a charming use of that concept with just a pop or two of color.

    IMG_7688

Accessories are fun in a garden. As your eyes move around, you see one interesting object after another.

    IMG_7669

Comfortable seating and handy tables added ease to the hospitality.

    IMG_7667

A dining table gives options for dinner or for working in a lovely setting.

    IMG_7668

Notice the bed of herbs near the door leading to the kitchen.

    IMG_7629

We were totally enchanted with these roses that seemed to be growing in bouquets.

    IMG_7672

It was so quiet and peaceful that it was easy to forget we were in the heart of the city – until we looked up!

  • Where to Pick Up Take-Out for Summer Events Like Shakespeare on the Common

Tonight is opening night for Shakespeare on the Common, so it seems like the perfect day to update great places for take-out food for events or a picnic.

    10547387_10152274488011238_8067952550106488889_o

    Back Bay

Marlboro Market (map & reviews) has a deli counter where they have some of the best sandwich values in the area. Simple, hearty fare made to your specifications by the friendly crew behind the counter. Bonus – you can fill your cooler with soft drinks, chips, and anything else you need here. They even sell the coolers!

flour bakery + cafe has locations in the Back Bay, South End, Fort Point near the Waterfront and Harbor Walk, and in Central Square Cambridge. While you might be thinking about an all dessert picnic, remember they make great meals as well.

Thinking Cup at 85 Newbury Street is between the Arlington and Dartmouth Street footbridges to the Esplanade and just a couple of blocks from the Public Garden. They offer a great selection of take-out. They also have locations across from the Boston Common at 165 Tremont Street and in the North End at 236 Hanover Street.

Bacco's Wine and Cheese is on St. James right off Arlington making it the perfect place to pick up a meal for either the Esplanade or The Boston Common. Above is their ready-to-go Bento Box. Each day they offer a selection of cheese, bread, meat, and condiments in a box.

Next door at Bacco's Fine Foods, you can find sandwiches, hot meals, and everything you might want for a day outside enjoying the best of a Boston event.

    Cambridge Central Square

This is becoming a true food destination and not just for all the great restaurants located there.

central bottle wine + provisions is great for those who'll be coming to the river from the North. They have a great selection of cheese, salumi, and an ever changing daily food selection.

The H-Mart in Central Square has a Food Court making it a prime spot for gathering a great picnic to take to the river.

    6a00e54fc42bb8883401b7c8741942970b-800wi

    We highly recommend Panificio's gazpacho.

    Beacon Hill

Savenor's Market built its reputation on excellent meat, but they have always offered a fine selection of other food.

Other favorite picnic pick-up locations from Charles Street are: The Paramount and Panificio. And for great, healthy snacks stop at the Fastachi shop at 83 Charles Street.

    Boston Common

There is now some good food right on the Common. You'll find trucks stationed by the newly restored Brewer Plaza for long hours each day. There is also The Frog Pond Cafe in-season with some very nice options.

Across from the Common is the Thinking Cup, as we mentioned above. This cafe has built a solid reputation on its outstanding coffee service, but it also has great sandwiches and pastry.

    6a00e54fc42bb8883401b8d1f196b3970c-800wi

We will make a special trip to the Greenway for the Jamaican Patties from Jamaica Mi Hungry.

    Waterfront & North End

Gathering food in the North End is a regular habit of ours. We love Salumeria Italiana and will often pick up a quick meal from their offerings.

We love the recent addition of good Mexican food from Tenoch at 3 Lewis Street in the North End. We found it perfect for a picnic in Christopher Columbus Park.

Along the Greenway, there is an ever-changing collection of food trucks and carts for meals and snacks. They have a schedule posted here. You can consult our food truck tab to learn more about some of the rolling restaurants.

We've given you a start and told you about the places we go and enjoy. Tell us about your favorite places to enjoy an event or a meal and where you love to go to pick up your food.

What's on your Food Lover's shopping list?

  • Danger of Xylitol for Dogs Update: More Products That Contain It

This article from the Pet Poison Helpline with even more information on products containing the chemical Xylitol, that can be deadly to our precious dogs, came across my desk this week.

Screen Shot 2016-07-11 at Monday, July 11, 20161.20.23 PM

Last summer I wrote one of my City Paws newspaper columns on this topic and republished it here on BostonZest. Here's a link to that article.

Dogs in Danger from the Xylitol Around Your Home

The update from Pet Poison Helpline includes a long list of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, supplements, and foods that contain this toxin for dogs. Ahna Brutlag, DVM, MS, DABT, DABVT, Associate Director of Veterinary Services, Pet Poison Helpline, wrote the article. She has also stressed how low the toxic levels can be and what you should do if your dogs might have ingested any of these products.

     6a00e54fc42bb8883401a3fd433b24970b-500wi

Review these items in both articles and if you have any of them, be sure to put them in dog safe containers and out of reach. You might want to make your own or buy poison stickers to attach to any item that could be harmful.

One action we have taken is extra care when disposing of sugarless chewing gum. It is only put in trash receptacles that our Poppy has absolutely no way of exploring. And our gum is placed in screw-top glass jars just to be extra sure it doesn't attract her attention.

Get to know all of our Sunday Dogs at Boston Dogs.

Thanks to everyone who Hops over to Amazon from here to do their shopping. We appreciate your support.

  • Safe Drug Disposal in Boston Updated for 2017

Walking through the lobby of Massachusetts General Hospital last week, I was reminded of this post and this container for the disposal of prescription drugs. We have updated the links to help our readers who would like to clean out drugs from their own medicine cabinet or help an older relative or neighbor deal with the medications they no longer use.

    IMG_8112

This particular site is just for prescription drugs. But when I did a bit of research on the topic, I found some sites for other classes of drugs.

Screen Shot 2016-07-11 at Monday, July 11, 201610.22.24 AM

The Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) has a page with locations of other Drug Take Back Kiosks.

These take human and pet medication and over-the-counter meds. They don't take needles, aerosols, or a few other categories, so read the list before you pack that bag from your medicine cabinet cleanout.

    Sharps_disposal

For safe needle and syringe disposal, the BPHC offers these locations.

    M1_01

As long as we have your attention on this important topic, here is a great resource for the safe use, storage, and disposal of meds.

  • Set Up A “Ripe & Ready” Fruit Bowl To Prevent Wasted Food

In our home, we have reduced wasted food by setting up a “Ripe and Ready” fruit bowl. When we began doing this, we added the ripe & ready sign to remind us to empty the bowl and then refill it. While we are scoping out the fruit supply, one of us will grab a colander and wash a supply of berries for the day.

    IMG_7570

The first one of us who checks out the fruit supply in the morning sets those pieces that are ready to eat that day in a bowl on the kitchen counter.

    IMG_7567

We eat a lot of fruit around here. Our breakfast oatmeal may have pears, bananas, and blueberries added. Our afternoon snack plate might be a bowl of cherries and a sliced apple. A suppertime cheese tray could have a pear or some berries as an accompaniment.

    IMG_7569

We have our main supply on the baker’s rack in our dining area. In stone fruit season, we may have an auxiliary bowl on the dining table just for ripening pieces. (The apple was added to remind us to use up the supply in the refrigerator.)

This time of year, we are all tempted to buy more of the delicious local fruit and berries than we can use between market visits. The ripe and ready fruit bowl keeps us from discovering a moldy peach or mushy plum because they are usually eaten before it’s too late.

    6a00e54fc42bb8883401bb09033620970d-800wi

And if you do discover that too many pieces of fruit have arrived in your kitchen or that for some reason they have all decided to ripen together, make a Crostata, like the one featured in our post,

Rhubarb, Ginger Crostata Recipe from Leite’s Culinaria.

You can substitute almost any fruit or combo of fruits for the rhubarb. You can also fold fruit into a bread pudding or cut up a selection, add a bit of your favorite liqueur, and refrigerate for a cooling dessert.
