Irish Setter Theo Is a Typical Puppy

Play for 20 minutes and sleep for 20 minutes. That's how life goes for puppies like this 13-week-old Irish Setter pup Theo.

As we walked East, Theo was alert and enjoying some bench time with his puppy sitter. He had an assortment of toys and was interested in everything going on around him.

On our westward walk home, Theo was sound asleep on the bench and never twitched a muscle when Penny took this photo. That's life with a wee dog – 20 minutes of non-stop play and then 20 minutes of deep sleep.

We're looking forward to watching Theo grow. Next time we meet, he should have all his puppy shots and we'll be able to let him and Poppy move in for a close up sniff.

Meet Coco the Cafe Yogi

Meet Coco Chanel, a lovely Whippet who entertained us while we dined recently. With Poppy tucked under our table, we ordered and then began to notice the poses assumed by this graceful canine. (The location of this unnamed cafe in an unnamed town must be kept secret to avoid interference by the dog haters. But, if you see us in person, ask and we'll share.)

Front paws tucked beneath her, Coco sat still as a statue and meditated while we sipped our wine. Then she rose, stared ahead, lifted one paw, and held that pose for a long count. That paw came down and she transitioned into a full stretch with paws out in front. This was also held for at least a minute in good yoga fashion.

While Coco seemed unaware of the people around her, we suspect she realized Penny had begun taking photos of her poses with the phone pointed her way. That's when she assumed her avoid-the-paparazzi pose with her back to us and her tail curled.

On the way out, we couldn't resist stopping by Coco's table to praise her grace, both as a yogi and a cafe dog. We learned her name and that when she's not moving from slow-pose to slow-pose she, like other Whippets, can take off and run at a speed of 35 miles an hour.

We also think her name is fabulous. As her namesake Coco Chanel said, "Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance."

Coco, you are an elegant yogi. Thanks for adding your delicious self to our day.

My Little Sunday Dog …

A Sunday Beach Dog Playing on the Tidal Flats

Most of the time, we meet our Sunday dogs up close and get to know a bit about them. Today's dog is one we watched from afar from a deck high above Provincetown Harbor. This beach dog was having a great time running around the tidal flats and leading her people on a merry chase.

There was such sheer pleasure in the long runs the pup was making across the water and sand.

I can almost hear the dog saying, "Yes, I hear you calling me but …"

"Why don't you come over here and we can all watch the clouds and sea together?"

"Hey, you knew I'd come back to you eventually. Is it time for dinner?"

We say, thank you to this dog and all the Ptown beach dogs who walk or gallop by and entertain us with their beach explorations and antics.

A Sunday Beach Dog Playing on the Tidal Flats

Wolfgang: Tiny Dog with a Big Name

One of our favorite pastimes this summer will be watching Wolfgang grow up. In our neighborhood, word of a new puppy spreads like wildfire and everyone shares the latest cuteness they've witnessed with other dog fans.

So you know that this little Maltipoo with the big name of Wolfgang is going to be the talk of the town.

At four months old, he is sticking close to his human companion but watching and learning all the time.

Last Sunday, we told you how Leo put on a demonstration of great behavior in the park so little Wolfie could learn from his example. You can see how intently the tiny pup followed along.

We look forward to seeing this little guy grow up and are happy to add him to our list of great park pals.

Wolfgang: Tiny Dog with a Big Name

Leo Models for Us and Tutors a Tiny Pal at the Same Time

We met Leo on a walk, recently, and asked if this charming and well-behaved Havanese would serve as our model for an article Penny was writing on Urban Canine Good Citizenship. He and his personal manager agreed.

Here he is in one of his prettiest, most well-mannered sits.

You can see that Leo has mastered the art of paying attention.

He will lean in and follow any hand holding a treat. Such a smart boy!

He is one of those rare models that will follow the camera and offer the photographer many angles of his beautiful face.

And, as he put on this show of excellent canine behavior, he had an audience. We had all just met the little Maltipoo Wolfgang. With Leo for a tutor, Wolfie (as I think many of his friends will call him) will soon be showing off his own brand of outstanding urban puppyhood.

Canine Travel Alert for Our Sunday Dog Lovers

Those traveling to the Midwest, meeting up with or hosting dogs from that area, should be aware of a serious epidemic of canine influenza that began in the Chicago area and has spread to Wisconsin, Ohio, and Indiana.

According to researchers at Cornell University, “… results from additional testing indicate that the outbreak is being caused by a virus closely related to Asian strains of influenza A H3N2 viruses, currently in wide circulation in southern Chinese and South Korean dog populations since being identified in 2006. There is no evidence that it can be transmitted to humans.”

These scientists add that this strain can also cause infection and respiratory illness in cats. Like our lovely friend Sophia.

They don’t know if the current canine influenza vaccine will protect your dog from this strain. If you are traveling to the Midwest or will be in close contact with dogs from this area, you should discuss prevention with your veterinarian. Be aware that vaccination for this disease is a two step process done a couple of weeks apart. So, if you are considering a vaccination, plan accordingly.

You should also know the flu symptoms. Cornell outlined what to look for, “Both Influenza strains can cause high fever, loss of appetite, coughing, nasal discharge, and lethargy. Symptoms may be more severe in cases caused by the H3N2 virus. Some infected dogs may not show symptoms at all.”

The last note about lack of symptoms is important because a dog without symptoms can still be shedding the virus and infecting others. So be careful about those sniffy greetings if you are in a zone with a canine flu outbreak.
