Sunday Dog, “Sandy” Loves Boston!

… and, Boston loves her right back! Who wouldn’t? Sandy has the sweetest face with a personality to match. Although she only arrived a couple of weeks ago, this 10-year-old Beagle beauty told us she feels right at home.

A North Shore transplant, Sandy is very calm and loving with a quiet confidence that makes her a hit with everyone she meets– including her new housemate, a meow named Dunhill.

Even though Sandy doesn’t play favorites and thoroughly enjoys meeting other dogs and people, we have to believe that she has a slight preference for friends with leashes.

Although in the country Sandy had the beach and a big yard, she’s quickly learning that the entire city is her new playpen with exciting, new places to explore!

We can tell by the look on that face that Sandy is happy in her new, loving home and obviously enjoys savoring the moment. Welcome to Boston, Sandy! You’re now an official, “city girl.”

Poppy Says, “Thank You!”

Poppy is popping back into the Sunday Dog spotlight to say, "Thanks!" to everyone who held off on patting her, cuddling her, and introducing her to their dogs while she was waiting to have immunity from diseases that could make her very sick.

We explained this danger period for puppies back in 2009 in this post:

Welcome Puppy Reggie to the Neighborhood

First steps on the ground in Boston.

On Friday, Poppy was 16 weeks old and finally her little paws could hit the sidewalks of Boston. At last, she could interact with some of the people who had been waiting to hold her and pat her, and with some of the dogs who'd been waiting to sniff her butt!

And after a long walk, she had a long sleep.

Also, while we're passing out the thanks, we really appreciated the kind words from Lisa DeCanio over at BostInno. She not only included BostonZest in her 21 Local Must-Read Food Blogs, but also liked our Sunday Dog collection!

In Memory of Our Sweet Maggie Mae

Maggie Mae (August 20, 1996 to January 29, 2012)

She was our Sunday Dog, our Monday dog, our summer dog, our winter dog.

Oh, how she loved the snow!

And, walking on the beach.

And, sitting on a bench in the park or on a deck overlooking the sea.

She loved other dogs and people and spent her life making humans smile just by trotting down a Boston sidewalk with her little tail wagging away.

She was that kind of dog.

Her unconditional love for us was a most precious gift and each day she brought laughter and joy into our lives.

Last Sunday, we held her close as we gave her our final gift, a peaceful end.

Maggie introduced us to so many wonderful people and dogs over the years. She captured the hearts of people near and far. We know we are not going to be the only ones missing our little elf.

Because some of you have asked, donations may be sent in her name to your choice of the following places or to your own special animal charity if you have a favorite. And, please give your own companions an extra hug or some special time together in her memory.

Tips on Caring for a Sick Dog
Taking care of a sick dog is not easy. We know because Miss Maggie Mae has been giving her devoted nursing staff a workout recently.

In the photo above, she was suffering from an upset tummy at a rental apartment in Provincetown. Fortunately, we had her little kit bag with all of her medications and a supply of Puppy Piddle Pads with us.

We were able to reduce the stress, for all three of us, by using a few strategies we've learned over the years.
1. Piddle pads can be used to prevent stains on furniture, floors, or carpets. We always use our own blankets and towels to protect rental home surfaces, but this time we added a layer of absorbent, disposable piddle pads. They made clean up quick and easy. And, by stacking them, we were able to quickly remove the soiled one and keep Maggie cleaner and more comfortable.
2. We also had a few washable moistureproof pads with us that we use on the seat of rental cars, Zipcars, and inside her dog crate. Whatever happens on the ride, from spilled water to wet feet, the car is protected. At home, they make good protection on sofas or our bed when Maggie isn't feeling well, and we want to keep her close.
3. Vomiting or diarrhea can cause dehydration. And, here's a link that shows you how to tell if your dog is dehydrated. Remember, dyhydration is always an emergency, but it's a situation that can be remedied quickly at an animal hospital.
4. Keeping a pet hydrated when she doesn't want to drink is always an issue, but you can buy unflavored Pedialyte at almost any grocery or drug store. We used a baby's medicine doser to put liquids into Maggie's mouth. Once there, she'd swallow them.
5. Tempting a finicky appetite can be hard. In recovery mode, most vets recommend a bland diet. We used poached chicken and rice. When our little girl refused even that tasty treat, we managed to get her eating with some baby food that contained just chicken and chicken broth.
