Sunday Dog, Maddox – Making New Friends!

Maddox has only just landed in Boston and is already making new friends! Our Poppy introduced us after these two did their get-to-know-you sniffs! Click on Photos to Enlarge!

Although both 11-months-old, Poppy has most likely had a bit more experience adapting to all the cold, white stuff than her Atlanta pal. But, it didn’t take Maddox long to begin exploring all those frozen flakes.

So This Is Snow!

The idea is to stay as close to the ground as possible, that way you can make a split-second decision to roll, romp, or chomp!

Well, it’s obvious to us that our new neighbor has found a fun, new toy – and it’s free! Too bad spring will spoil all the fun (uh-h-h … eventually).

Maddox, you’re gonna love Boston and make lots of new friends. Thanks for being our Sunday Dog!

Ollie Says, Time to Get a New Dog License
Here's our pal Olivier – better known to the local dog pack as Sir Ollie. Today, he's here to remind you to get a shiny, new dog license to add to that collection of tags on your collar.

It's the Law

The law says that by April 1st of each year, all dogs in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts must obtain a new license from the city or town where they reside.

Ollie says, since most dogs can’t write out a check or fill out forms, responsibility for following this law falls to the people who love them and choose to have a dog in their life.

A Few Tips & Links
- Applications for the 2013 Boston Dog Licenses arrived in homes earlier this month.
- You can also download the forms on the city's website.
- Those who mail in their applications should be certain to include copies of the requested neutering and rabies vaccination certificates, a check payable to animal control, and a stamped self-addressed envelope.
- That envelope will be used to return your dog’s license and tag to you.
- Once your dog is registered with the city, Animal Control will provide a business reply envelope for you to mail in your application and you will only have to pay the postage one way.
- Boston has a two-tiered price structure for dog licenses.
  - It costs $6.00 per year to license a neutered male or spayed female dog.
  - That fee jumps to $17.00 if the animal is intact.
  - The ordinance that set a separate price for pit bulls was voided by a new state law that went into effect on November 1, 2012.
- If you happen to be near city hall, you can bring everything you need with you and pick up the forms and obtain a dog license in room 811.
- Only checks are accepted for payment, in person or by mail – no cash or credit cards.
Don't worry, Ollie did get a little reward for helping us with this message. And, he said to tell you that it's really important to let the city know how many dogs live here and should be considered when the politicians do their planning and spend our money. Getting everyone to license will send a message.

So, stand up and be counted!

Sunday Dog “Baloo” Is a Little Bear!

Say hello to Baloo, an 8-month old Chow Chow who’s named after the bear in Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. This curious little guy seemed to be as interested in us as we were in him! Just look at that face!

When we first noticed Baloo walking through a Kenmore Square park, we thought he had just stepped out of the show ring.

The magnificent Chow Chow is often described as regal, very intelligent, beautiful, aloof, loyal, affectionate with family members, dignified, independent, and sometimes stubborn.

Baloo Doing His Best Bear-Like Pose

You may have first come to know the name Baloo from the Disney version of The Jungle Book,
where the fun-loving, laid-back singing bear became the movie’s most
popular character. And, since the Chow Chow has roots in China where
the breed is sometimes referred to as Hsiung Kou or bear dog, we think
the name is genius!

Sunday Dog Baloo is not capable of singing (as far as we know), but he does possess extraordinary “healing powers.” This furry funnyman managed to rouse his person from a deep funk by trotting up to her with an enormous branch, 3-times his size, as she describes experiencing “the purest joy!”

Baloo, you are amazing!

Sunday Dog “Baloo” Is a Little Bear!

Spread the Word on The Yellow Dog Project & DINOS!

We recently learned about The Yellow Dog Project thanks to our friend David Ziegler. (Thanks David!) This is an attempt to give an easy to recognize signal that a particular dog needs a bit of space.

The project asks that those of us who have a dog who needs a bit of space for whatever reason (health issues, training, rehab, behavior) put a yellow ribbon or marker on our leash. Then, those of us who see this signal can keep ourselves and our dogs away.

A second group with the same goal and some good resources on their website is DINOS or Dogs In Need Of Space.

Even dogs you know well may occasionally need a bit of space and can't play with your pup. They may have a GI upset that is going around the neighborhood and a considerate guardian who doesn't want to spread it to your dog. They may have an injury that means they can only have a quiet walk and have to avoid the movement and excitement of greeting pals. The may be out as a part of a training exercise and should not be distracted.

We used to walk with a dog that was perfectly happy strolling with her usual pack but would turn growly and fierce if a strange dog approached. You can imagine how we all reacted every time a dog, often off-leash, came bounding our way with a guardian trailing behind yelling, "He's friendly!" Yes, your dog may be friendly, but the one on a leash may not be. One more reason why no dog should be off-leash outside of dog recreation spaces.

Spread the word to your dog loving friends. Ask your veterinarian, groomer, pet supply shop, and dog group to sign on as a supporter of both sites and make this universal signal a reality!
