  • Russet May Be the Color of Autumn 2016 in Boston

When we think of autumn colors in New England, we conjure up images of reds, yellows, and brilliant oranges. But, with this year's drought, we may be seeing russets and browns. Here's a link to the drought map to give you some idea of the places where colors will be weak.

    IMG_1786 copy

As leaves are falling, they have a bit of color in some spots, but a lot of dry brown edges. The Boston Globe ran an article this week predicting less color in Massachusetts and recommending that you visit Northern New England if you want your annual color feast.

    IMG_2144

On my morning walks this week, I've only seen a few hints of bright color on trees, even in well watered gardens.

    IMG_2234

In most cases, the trees are turning a russet brown.

Obviously trees are suffering in places where no one cares for them. This week's rain will help, but making a habit of watering the trees in your area into November would help even more!

Here's a link to the city's page on Boston's trees. You can download instructions on watering, mulching, and planting around street trees. In case that page disappears as the city "improves" its website, you can download that PDF here. Download Street Tree tips.

  • Congratulations! Edible Boston Summer 2016 Issue Is Their 10th Anniversary!

The arrival of a new preview issue of Edible Boston in my mailbox always makes me smile. As I read the Ilene Bezahler's letter to her readers, my smile grew from ear-to-ear. This is their 10th Anniversary and a new publication will be added to the family. (More on that below.)

    Edible Boston Summer 2016

Celebrate with Edible Boston as they welcome a new season of food and spotlight the businesses that support fresh and local food in our community.

    20090820DSC_0012 - Version 2

Be sure to read John Lee's, "Farmers Diary: Ten with Edible Boston" for his thoughts on the progress the local food movement has made in the past decade.

(Penny profiled John over on Serious Eats a few years ago. Here's more about this intelligent, thoughtful man.)

     KnGcVifY

    That Sibling Publication: "To Market"

I'm very excited about the expansion of the Edible Boston talent bank into the regional food policy topic. As Ilene describes it, "To Market will take a regional approach to local food but with the added impact of tackling policy issues, exploring trends across state lines and how the New England states interact to form a vibrant, regional food economy." More about it in a report from Boston Business Journal.

In September, you'll find more about it on the new website, and you can follow along now on Facebook and Twitter.

Support publisher Ilene Bezahler and her talented team

First, pick up a copy of Edible Boston at one of these locations. In fact, pick up two copies and share one with a food-loving friend or leave it where someone might discover it among lesser publications and become a new fan.

May I suggest that you let their sponsors know you saw them in the magazine and grab an extra copy and get it to someone else who cares about supporting the local food movement. Also, if you have a blog, twitter account, or facebook page, write about them, link to them, follow them, retweet their tweets, like them on facebook, and, in general, spread the word about this great asset to our community.

And, to be sure you never miss an issue, you can subscribe over on their website!

  • Our Favorite May 2015 Activities and Events

May is one of those months when we like to get out and enjoy our city and perhaps schedule a few day trips or short getaways to places around the area. After this winter, we have worked to get our assignments ahead and will now take some time off to enjoy spring.

    CHE_8136 - Version 22013-06-21-back-bay-garden--© 2014 Penny Cherubino

We already gave you the lowdown on What's happening around Boston in May 2015. That post puts the month into a planning perspective for you. This one is about our faves.

When if comes to events, we tend to enjoy the quieter side of the happenings roster. Lilac Sunday at the Arnold Arboretum on May 10th is more our style. It is the only day you are allowed to picnic on the grounds and they now have a small fleet of food trucks available for the event.

    Food Truck Season

Speaking of food trucks, by May it's normally warm enough to dine al fresco and that means we can do more food truck sampling. The city seems to have lost interest in supporting this great aspect of Boston. So rather than recommend you use the city's site, we suggest you depend on Steve Leibowitz's site, Hub Food Trucks.

One of our favorite food truck spots is near the fountain at the Christian Science Plaza. It's listed as Belvidere on the schedules. In addition to more trucks and more choices, it has great seating for eating and fun people watching. Here's a link to the Hub Food Trucks schedule.

    Community Gardens

It's planting and sprucing up season at community gardens throughout the area. We always plan a walk and photo shoot in the Fenway Victory Gardens in May. Here are some scenes from a past walk. From the Boston Natural Areas Network, here's a community garden locator.

    For Other Tastes

Over on TripAdvisor's Boston Forum, Penny starts a monthly conversation on what's happening in Boston. The local volunteers who answer questions for visitors and share information among themselves add their favorites to that discussion. If you prefer big organized events, sports, and celebrity events to our quieter tastes, you may find great ideas at this link.

What's your favorite pastime or event in May?

Add your thoughts in the comments below. Tweet them to @BostonZest or send us an email and we'll add your suggestions to this post as an update.

  • Lobster Rolls vs Lobster Salad Rolls

Those of us who love lobster rolls have more options these day. When we first moved to Boston, we quickly learned that if you saw the words "lobster roll" on a menu, it was most likely a "lobster salad roll" with mayonnaise and perhaps fillers.

    3280006229_e78b988102_z

Here's a photo of a lobster salad roll from Mark H. Anbinder's Flickr photostream. (Used under this creative commons license.)

This looks like a good version with crisp lettuce and little filler. For those who love mayo and don't mind the fillers, there are dozens of great versions of this around the area. But, it is a "lobster salad roll" not a "lobster roll" to those of us who grew up around the Southern Rhode Island or Connecticut seacoast.

Think for a moment. If a menu reads "chicken sandwich," would you expect it to be a "chicken salad sandwich?"

    Where to Find Lobster Rolls!

The question of where to get a Hot Buttered Lobster Roll came up on the Boston Trip Advisor Forum recently. That will give you some recommendations from other Boston sources.

Here's where we enjoy lobster rolls – hot or cold but all with no mayo or fillers. (We do welcome a nicely buttered and grilled roll and a bit of drawn butter on the side.)

    6a00e54fc42bb888340120a80c02ae970b-800wi

Neptune Oyster's Hot Buttered Lobster Roll broke the mold for Bostonians. Suddenly, we had a place to go for a great lobster roll. Other places caught on and today we have many great options.

    6a00e54fc42bb88834013489000d59970c-800wi

Jake's Seafood in Hull has always given us the same lobster roll we knew and loved from Rhode Island seafood shacks. Jake's menu reads, "Our classic! A full 1/4lb. of freshly picked lobster meat on a traditional hotdog bun (toasted with butter upon request), served with mayo on the side."

    6a00e54fc42bb888340192acc03c1d970d-800wi

Belle Isle Seafood in Winthrop is another place where we can ask for our lobster roll our way. You can also order it with mixed lobster meat or lobster tail meat.

    6a00e54fc42bb8883401a511d80074970c-800wi

The Lobster Pool in Rockport provides a great lobster roll or lobster salad roll, your choice, with a fantastic view of the Atlantic Ocean crashing on the rocky shore.

    6a00e54fc42bb88834019101cad713970c-800wi

James Hook & Company has lobster salad rolls ready to go in their case on busy days. But, they will be happy to make a lobster roll for you if you ask. They'll even toast the roll on request and provide a side of butter. We love to take their lobster rolls to a table on the harbor walk along the Fort Point channel.

    6a00e54fc42bb8883401a511795976970c-800wi

Row 34, over in Fort Point, serves their lobster roll with slaw and homemade chips. (We opted out of the slaw.)

As more places add lobster rolls to their menus, we'll check them out. Let us know if you have a place you think we should try.

We can't recommend any lobster roll or lobster salad roll that uses frozen lobster in whole or in part. Some places who serve lobster salad rolls have said they could make a lobster roll and when it arrives, it is made with frozen lobster. Why would a seaside shop have frozen lobster on hand? It may be that they use all or a percentage of frozen lobster in their lobster salad.

Fillers like celery or a bed of lettuce in the roll are another way to cut the cost of the roll and perhaps offer it at a low price.

Summer is a great time to enjoy a trip to the shore and this New England specialty. Let us know your favorite lobster rolls and lobster salad rolls.

We have full posts on each of these places. Here are the links.

We just returned from a two week escape to Provincetown, MA. Early spring gave us a new perspective on the town and another time when we know we can enjoy this lovely place.

This was the view from our new favorite deck. The moorings were empty, the sea was stormy, there was a mist in the air, but it was a beautiful, restful, and peaceful day.

In the next couple of weeks, we'll drop in more photos and give you more reasons why you might want to enjoy Provincetown now as locals and visitors return, shops and restaurants begin to open, and the quiet is deeply soothing.

Here's a link to all our Provincetown posts.
