  • What’s Open in Boston on Patriots’ Day + Parking, Trash & MBTA Schedule Changes & More

    Here's a rundown of what's open and what's closed in Boston on Patriots' Day and the MBTA schedules for – Monday, April 15, 2019. Plus tips and information on getting around Boston, parking, marathon issues, trash pickup, and other aspects of this day in the city.

    Update 04.09.19 – The City of Boston has posted its Patriots' Day Weekend traffic advisory with timelines for parking restrictions and street closings.

    Update 03.23.19 – The MBTA has posted its 2019 Marathon info, including: getting to the marathon, additional service & more.

    Patriots' Day is a Massachusetts State Holiday Only.

    Open:
    Restaurants, Bars, Convenience Stores, Supermarkets, Retail Stores, Liquor Stores

    Financial Services: Banks may open if they wish. All markets are open. 

    Federal Offices and Facilities are open: This includes the Postal Service.

     

    Closed:
    Massachusetts City, Town, State Operations: This includes Schools, Libraries. Only emergency services are available. 

     

    Boston Parking

     

    One of the most common questions we get is about street sweeping on Patriots' Day. Here's the page from the city website with the answer. It says: 

     

    "On City holidays, we suspend street sweeping during the day, but we still sweep streets at night. On the weekends, we sweep some streets at night. Please always check posted street sweeping signs for information. If you still have questions, please contact 311."

     

    You don't have to feed the meters. Other parking rules apply. Many more streets than in the past will be cleared of parked cars to accommodate the Boston Marathon and Patriots' Day activities.

     

    Be sure to check your car in the days leading up to the marathon to be certain it is not in a tow-away zone for the event.

    Street Closures and Parking Restrictions for Marathon Weekend

    The City of Boston a very helpful page detailing all the things you need to know about street closures and parking restrictions for this weekend. Here's a link to all that information.

    The city has changed the way it publishes the schedule for holidays so that you now have to go to the city site and look up your specific address in order to get information. 
     

    MBTA Marathon Monday Service Information, April 15, 2019

     

    Marathon Monday 2019 MBTA Quick Look …

    • Blue, Orange, Red, and Silver Lines "will operate a regular weekday schedule with rush-hour levels of service before and after the race…" (See the MBTA page for special service notes on the Green Line.) 
    • Commuter Rail trains "… will operate a regular weekday schedule with additional trains on the Framingham/Worcester Line to support additional crowds."
    • "Buses and trackless trolleys will operate a regular weekday schedule on April 15th …"
    • "… Some bus routes will be detoured to accommodate the Marathon and other festivities. (See the MBTA website for more info.)
    • "All Commuter Boat and Ferry Service … will operate a regular weekday schedule."
    • "THE RIDE service will operate a regular weekday schedule."

     

    MBTA PARKING

    "Customers planning to park in an MBTA garage or lot should allow additional travel time and note that some garages and lots may fill very quickly due to heavy parking demand. "

    The MBTA has published their Boston Marathon Guide with all sorts of helpful travel tips for spectators and runners.

     Tips Include: 

    • The MBTA advises, "Copley Station is closed for the entire day on April 15th."
    • "Bicycles are prohibited onboard MBTA subway vehicles on April 15 …"
    • Check T-Alerts for the most up-to-date service information.
    • "Spectators can access almost the entire marathon course on the MBTA."
    • "You can park at an MBTA station and take the subway or Commuter Rail in."
    • "… All subway lines and the Silver Line will run additional service before and after the marathon."

  • The Long Lost, South Boston, City Point Head House

    The photo below is the best one I could find of the long lost, South Boston, City Point Head House. Yes it is possible to grieve for something you have never seen or known. How I would have loved to have seen and photographed this building.

    When Reddit Boston put up a photo of this architectural gem, I was immediately in search mode to find it and learn more about its history.

    This 1925 Fairchild Aerial Survey photo, from the Boston Public Library's collection, shows where is was located. You see Castle Island directly across Pleasure Bay from the building that was called the City Point Head House.

    "Head house, City Point, South Boston, Mass." Library of Congress photo.

    The Head House was designed by Architect Edmond Marsh Wheelwright and built circa 1897. Wheelwright is one of the most important names in Boston's architectural history. While this gingerbread gem is gone, his work survives in landmarks throughout the area. (Some of his papers are in the BPL Fine Arts Department Haven and Hoyt Collection.)

    Very Popular in Its Day

    Histories of South Boston refer to the popularity of this beach and this building. In addition to restrooms, changing rooms, and offices, the building contained restaurants.

    This 1928 photo, "Crowds at Pleasure Bay, City Point, South Boston" is from the BPL Collection.

    A partly covered pier extended out into the bay. I've been trying to determine if ferries served this pier. 

    What Happened to the Head House?

    Both the pier and the building were damaged in the Hurricane of 1938. In the early morning of December 5, 1942, a 2-alarm fire at the building damaged it further, and what remained was torn down.

    Allston/Brighton, Dorchester, East Boston, Jamaica Plain*, Mattapan, Roslindale, West Roxbury and Hyde Park, delayed a day
    *If you live in Jamaica Plain and your trash is picked up 2 times per week, do not delay."

    Here's a rundown of what's open and what's closed in Boston on Patriots' Day, and the MBTA schedules for – Monday, April 20, 2015. Plus, tips and information on getting around Boston, parking, marathon issues, trash pickup, and other aspects of this day in the city.

    Patriots' Day is a Massachusetts State Holiday Only.

    Open:
    Restaurants, Bars, Convenience Stores, Supermarkets, Retail Stores, Liquor Stores

    Financial Services: Banks may open if they wish. All markets are open. 

    Federal Offices and Facilities are open: This includes the Postal Service.

     

    Closed:
    Massachusetts City, Town, State Operations: This includes Schools, Libraries. Only emergency services are available. 

     

    Boston Parking

     

    One of the most common questions we get is about street sweeping on Patriots' Day. Here's the page from the city website with the answer. It says: 

     

    "Daytime street sweeping is suspended on city holidays, but nighttime sweeping schedules remain in effect. Constituents are advised to call 617-635-4500 for exact details."

     

    You don't have to feed the meters. Other parking rules apply. Many more streets than in the past will be cleared of parked cars to accommodate the Boston Marathon and Patriots' Day activities.

     

    Be sure to check your car in the days leading up to the marathon to be certain it is not in a tow-away zone for the event. Here's how you can sign up for parking alerts and tow alerts.

    Monday, April 20 – Saturday, April 25, 2015
     
    No Delay of trash or recycling pick up in Back Bay, Bay Village, Beacon Hill, Charlestown, Chinatown, Fenway, Leather District, Mission Hill, North End, Roxbury, South Boston, and the South End
    Allston/Brighton, Dorchester, East Boston, Jamaica Plain*, Mattapan, Roslindale, West Roxbury and Hyde Park, delayed a day
    *If you live in Jamaica Plain and your trash is picked up 2 times per week, do not delay."

     

    2015 MBTA Marathon Monday Schedule:

     Tips:

    • Buy your fares in advance with a Charlie Card or Charlie Ticket to avoid waiting in line on Monday.  
    • The MBTA advises, "For the safety of our customers, Copley Station will be closed for the entire day on April 20, 2015."
    • Due to crowds, they don't allow bikes "on any MBTA vehicles on Patriots' Day."
    • Check T-Alerts for the most up-to-date service information.

    Marathon Monday 2015 MBTA Quick Look

    Blue, Orange, Red, Green, and Silver Line service will run a "regular weekday schedule." (See the MBTA page for special service notes on the Silver and Green Lines.)

    The Green line will have, "… rush-hour levels of service before and after the race."

    Commuter rail trains "… will operate a "regular weekday schedule."

    "Buses, trackless trolleys, and express bus routes will operate a weekday schedule … Some bus routes will be detoured due to the Marathon and other race of Patriots' Day events. The approximate time for most street closures is 8:00 a.m. through 6:30 p.m." (See the MBTA page for special service notes.)

    Commuter Boats "… will operate a regular weekday schedule."

    "THE RIDE will operate a regular weekday schedule."

    MBTA PARKING

    "Customers should also note that all MBTA parking garages will be pay-on-entry and cash-only on [Patriots' Day], April 20, [2015], in order to ensure all customers exit in a timely manner. Due to heavy parking demand, some MBTA parking garages and lots may fill more quickly than normal. Customers planning to park in an MBTA garage or lot should plan accordingly."

  • Farmers’ Market Lobster Rolls: Lobster Roll Chronicles

    On our recent visit to the Central Square Farmers' Market, we were happy to meet Chris Manning of C & C Lobsters and Fish. Chris is a lobsterman from Hull who is bringing fresh seafood to Cambridge each Monday!

    We had just stuffed ourselves with dosas from the nearby Dosa Factory so something light and fresh, like a lobster roll, for dinner seemed a great idea. Chris showed us his containers of fresh lobster. He catches them and his wife Carolyn picks the meat, deveins the tails, and makes it easy to make your favorite dish with their fresh lobster meat.

    While hot dog rolls are traditional, we stopped by the Hi-Rise Bread Company table and grabbed some of their hamburger rolls. They offered lots of surface for piling on the lobster.

    The lobster included big pieces of claw and tail, so step one was cutting those into bite size bits.

    Notice that we are not mixing anything into our lobster rolls. We lightly toasted the buns, spread the tiniest bit of melted butter on the bottom half, and then piled on the lobster meat.

    With the lobster ready to fall off the sides, Penny dripped a bit of melted butter onto the meat …

    … just enough to give it a golden glow. And, as you can see in the top photo, we each had a wedge of lemon and small dish of melted butter to adjust our lobster roll to our own taste. 

    Thanks, Chris and Carolyn! You did most of the work and we had two heaping lobster rolls plus leftovers.
