Smash & Grab: Broken Windows Cost Us All!

At one of the first crime watch meetings I attended after moving to Boston, a community policing officer told us that some thieves would break you car window to get a single quarter visible in the cup holder.

After a recent rash of broken car windows on our block, a detail police officer, who happened to be on the scene and spoke to the car owners, told me that the only thing stolen from those cars was change. I've been thinking about that ever since.

As I walked by a pile of broken glass later that week, I took a few photos with the thought of submitting one as a cover shot for the Back Bay Sun.

That cover ran this Tuesday with the headline, "Broken Windows." My caption reads, "Shattered auto safety glass is a common sight on the sidewalks of the Back Bay. Last year, more than 700 cases of “larceny from a motor vehicle” were reported in Police District D4. Officials urge drivers not to leave any property in view inside a car including change, clothing, electronics, and bags."

We All Pay

While it seems that the car owners just lost change, they also had their planned day rearranged, followed by the hassle of scheduling window replacement. Everyone who pays auto insurance chipped in to pay for that glass repair. The homeowners where the car was parked had to clean up the mess. Finally, those who walked by were reminded of the crime which can have an impact on a person's sense of security.

This led me to research the crime stats to see if this is really as common as it seems to be when you walk around the streets of Boston. Along the way, I found information on the Boston Police Department's "Don't be a Victim!" campaign that is underway in some neighborhoods with high "Larceny from Motor Vehicle" reports.

Poet’s Quill

We've received so many nice comments on Ed's "Poet's Quill" photo on the cover of the The Back Bay Sun that we decided to share it with our BostonZest readers. And, we wanted to say, "Thank You," to all our friends and neighbors who stop to say nice things about our photos. We appreciate the encouragement and support.

The caption we wrote for the newspaper was:

At the Boston Women’s Memorial, rain droplets beaded on Phillis Wheatley’s quill pen. Most feathers for quill pens were taken from the wings of geese. After writing a couple of pages, your quill would need resharpening with a penknife. [Ed Cherubino Photo]

Background on this Photo

As is the case for many of our photo assignments, we both took a number of photos of the Boston Women's Memorial right after it had its annual cleaning and waxing by conservators hired by the Friends of the Public Garden and paid for by contribution to the Henry Lee Conservation Fund.

Ed and I have different approaches to photography which makes for a nice selection of varied shots when we put all our photos on a topic into our computers to select the right one for the client. Ed loves his Nikon 35mm 1.8 fixed lens. I love my Nikon 28-300 Zoom. This day, Ed captured the feel of the raindrops on the surface of the quill.

Poet’s Quill

Does this bee from the Copley Square Farmers' Market bring a dose of sunshine to a winter week? It is here to tell you about a new BostonZest feature, "Shoot the Quote."

One of our regular assignments is to provide a front page photo for the Back Bay Sun. While these are often related to an event or have a caption that describes the people in the photo, sometimes they are simply a picture we love with a quotation. Here's an example.

“Sailing a boat calls for quick action, a blending of feeling with the wind and water as well as with the very heart and soul of the boat itself. Sailing teaches alertness and courage, and gives in return a joyousness and peace that but few sports afford.” George Matthew Adams (American newspaper columnist, 1878 – 1962)

Some week's, like in the case of the sailing photo above, we take a photo and then find a quote that fits it. Other times we have a quotation we love and we go out and, "shoot the quote." That is, we try to take a photograph that fits that quotation.

Here's an example of a quotation that we had and took a photo to express it.

“How softly summer shuts, without the creaking of a door.” Emily Dickinson (American poet 1830-1886)

Generous Gardeners Share the Wealth – Photo of the Week

This Cranesbill Geranium creates a beautiful ground cover that flowers in spring. You see the plant popping up in more than a few Back Bay gardens. This is, in part, because generous local gardeners share plants with others as they thin or redesign their own gardens.

Sometimes, on our walks along Marlborough Street, we'll see plants sitting outside a front yard with a sign that says, "free plants." Other times, a veteran gardener like Susan Juretschke will move plants from one garden to another as she tries to find the spot where they will thrive.

Gardeners are genererous people. We once lived next door to a gentleman we called the "Phantom Farmer" because we could arrive home from work to find a bag of garden fresh produce hanging on our doorknob.
