The Esplanade: A View from the Charles River with Linda Cox, July 23rd

Spend an evening on the river aboard The Charles Riverboat Company's beautiful tour boat, the Henry Longfellow, and learn about the Esplanade from one of the most respected of the park's advocates, Linda Cox.

This event is sponsored by the Boston Preservation Alliance. And, Linda's talks about the Esplanade always receive rave reviews.

"Join the Boston Preservation Alliance and Linda Cox, Esplanade advocate and historian, for a historical overview of the Charles River Esplanade and its changing landscape. Enjoy an up-close look at this designated Boston Landmark as we cruise aboard the Henry Longfellow, a custom designed riverboat from the Charles Riverboat Company fleet.

This event is $30 for Alliance members; $40 for non-members and includes light refreshments and a cash bar.

Boarding occurs at the Charles Riverboat Company dock located outside of the food court at the CambridgeSide Galleria. Parking is available in the CambridgeSide Galleria parking garage.

Getting Ready for July 4th Fireworks on the Charles River

This year, the main fireworks barge is lined up across the river. The small boat in the foreground is a State Police patrol keeping everyone away from the workers preparing the show. The photo above was taken on Tuesday, July 2, 2013.

The photo below is from last year.

In past years, the main barge was stationed parallel to the shore with a T-shaped extension on the Cambridge side.

On Thin Ice…

After our up and down temperatures and snow storms, this guy actually thought the Charles River Basin was frozen solidly enough for a walk on the river.

Just as I was about to call 9-1-1 to save first responders from having to do a water rescue, he turned and walked to shore. There he seemed surprized to see that the river freezes differently in different spots. By this outflow pipe, the water was moving and the ice was gone.

And, a few feet from where he turned, I spotted this crack.

Each year the Department of Conservation issues Ice Safety Tips and just last week they tweeted to a woman snowshoeing along the Esplanade, " … be careful and stay off the ice!"

And, if you've heard stories of people skating on the Charles or Colonel Henry Knox dragging cannons across the frozen river during the American Revolution, remember, that was in a colder time and across a much narrower river.

And even back in 1935, as you can see from this Leslie Jones photo from the Boston Public Library Collection, they had issues with thin ice.

The Charles River Basin is a relatively new, man-made body of water. It has a strong current and lots of inflows from other bodies of water.
