  • Built In Crane??? Now That’s an Amenity!

    From this angle, it looks like this building on St. James Avenue has a built in crane. Ed captured this photo of new trees being planted along the sidewalk. He was equally attracted by the wonderful layers of architecture from this spot outside Bacco's Wine & Cheese and the new Bacco's Fine Foods.

    In reality, the crane or cherry picker was tucked into an alley alongside the building. Some buildings, like the Hancock Tower, do have built in trollies to lower window washers.

  • Snow Scenes from This Week’s Storm

    Our photos of the week are from this week's snow storm in Boston.

    The archtecture in the Back Bay was made for snowy scenes. The crisp, white snow brings out the colors that are actually there but not always seen.

    Not all the brick in the Back Bay Historic District is red in tone. This building had a new facade added and the brick of choice was a bright yellowish beige.

    As I stood in the middle of two rows of trees on the outbound side of the Commonwealth Avenue Mall, I remembered hearing Commonwealth Avenue Mall expert Margaret Pokorney explain that, at one time, a group was advocating for and actually succeeded in having a third row of trees planted up the center of this space. 

    Seeing the branches intertwined and loving the view down the open space makes me glad more intelligent minds prevailed.

    Everyone seemed to be out taking photos. I hope that the other photographers joined me in taking a few moments to lower their cameras or phones and simply enjoyed the scene. The photos you etch into your heart and mind can be just as lasting as those in film, print, or digital form.

  • Picking Your Point of View on the Tower

    As you walk through historic neighborhoods, look at buildings from many vantage points. Ed took this photo of the First Church in Boston tower from a different point of view than most of our photos of this building. 

    I like the way his shot highlights the colors of the stonework and the softly curving angles of the corners.
