Sunday Dog, Nika – A Stunningly Gorgeous Siberian!

Nika is a stunningly gorgeous Siberian Husky whom we’ve had the pleasure of knowing for years. And, while it doesn’t seem possible, at eleven, she has become even more beautiful.

But, Nika’s allure goes well beyond her ice-blue eyes. It’s a fusion of many admirable bits that sets her apart. Even as a very playful puppy, “she was able to sit and be quiet,” her person recalled. “She had this kind of regal look.” There’s a centeredness, what some might call a Zen quality, about her.

“Because she’s a Siberian Husky, I felt she needed to have a Russian name.” We agree that Nika suits her well. It’s pretty with just the right amount of mystery and calmness to it.

The American Kennel Club describes the Husky as: “agreeable and outgoing … suitable for anything from sledding to therapy work … a great all-around dog.”

Others use words like: “intelligent … affectionate … more companion than pet.” Her best friend, who writes short stories, put it best, “Nika will sit with me, just be with me. She’s wonderful company.”

No wonder we all love you so much, Nika. Thanks for being this week’s Sunday Dog!

Sunday Dog, Zoey’s New Life in Boston

Not long ago, Zoey was saved from a last stop shelter in Arkansas and given a new life in Boston. Now, at about 14 months old, this charming little Dachshund is settling into her city home with ease. And, that means exploring, sniffing, and tasting every bit of her world!

“She’s a goat,” her person told us. “Anything that falls on the floor she’ll eat … all the sticks, acorns from the squirrels – she loves to eat!” Of course, when you’re a growing puppy, it’s behavior often seen as a right of passage, a way of testing boundaries, and learning about your surroundings.

And, for Zoey, learning also means “training!” This very bright, little hound is currently attending Good Manners Class at the Animal Rescue League.

How’s she doing? We were told, that when the trainer walks her around, she is perfectly obedient, but when the leash comes back to her regular companion, Zoey steals everyone’s treats because she’s food driven. "She passes, but I fail," her friend told us.

Hmm … sounds familiar to us. We know that with our feisty little Poppy there’s a lot of 2-legged training to be done on the other end of any leash. Teamwork will win out in the end.

Sunday Dog, Meeshu Has Magical, Different Colored Eyes!

As if our Sunday Dog, Meeshu weren’t cute enough, just stare into those magical, different colored eyes! They’re so amazing that this fashionable phenomenon (not uncommon in many animals, including some humans) is celebrated every July 12th during Different Colored Eyes Day!

Poppy and I were out for a walk the other day when we noticed this energetic, little bundle of curiosity bounding straight for us. At five months old, Meeshu reminds me of puppy Poppy last July. He wants to play with every dog he sees!

We were joined by a third pup and everybody had a good play! We’ll be watching as this little guy grows up. And, from what I’ve heard, Poppy’s looking forward to a rematch.

My Dog Is Cool

Instead of featuring a specific dog this Sunday, we want to be certain everyone can say, “My Dog Is Cool.”

It’s an education program from the animal protection organization RedRover designed to draw attention to the dangers faced by dogs left in cars in warm weather.

With air conditioned vehicles, people sometimes forget just how quickly the inside of a car can heat up. The group cites a Stanford University study, “… even on comparatively cool days, such as 72 degrees, a car's internal temperature will rocket to 116 degrees within 60 minutes. And keeping the windows open a crack hardly slows the rise at all.”

Someone who just intended to run into a shop for a quick errand could come out to find their dog in trouble. Or, they could come out to find their car window broken by a police officer who was trying to save the pup. Remember, those walking by a car don’t know how long the dog has been left there or how long you will be.

What To Do
Suppose you see a dog in a hot car, what should you do? First, observe the dog. Is she showing any signs of distress such as excessive panting or drooling, stumbling, disorientation, or loss of consciousness?

Write down the car’s license plate, make, model, and specifically where it is located and call 911. See if you can get someone else to check nearby shops to locate the driver while you wait for the police.

Veterinarian in a Hot Car
Dr Ernie Ward, a veterinarian, made a video of himself sitting in a car on a warm day with all four windows cracked. He explained, as he went along, what would be happening to a dog left under those conditions as the temperature in the car reached triple digits. If you have a few minutes, it’s definitely worth a look.

And, please, spread the word to anyone who thinks they can safely leave a pet in a parked car on a warm day, even for a short time.
