  • Thanks to All the Sunday Dog People Who Did it Right & Shame on Scofflaws

Congratulations and thanks to all of you who made it through this winter and only left footprints and paw prints behind in the snow.

    IMG_8111 - Version 22015-03-08-poppy-westie-bench-coat-boots-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

The record snowfall this winter was hard on people with dogs. First, there was the task of getting yourself dressed for each outing. Next, came adding a dog coat and boots if your pup is one who needs them.

Once outside, you had to find a spot where your dog would complete the task at hand. (Some dogs are fussy about things like that.)

Even if your dog was quick and would have been happy to return inside, you had to trudge the extra distance to find a waste receptacle for your pick up bag. And, in many cases, you found the trash bucket overflowing.

Back inside, you had to undress yourself and your dog, wash dirty paws, and attempt to dry wet fur. Plus, you had to do this 3 to 5 times a day depending on the age, size, breed, and overall health of your companion.

    Sm IMG_8134 - Version 22015-03-15-boston-cigarette-litter-commonwealth-avenue-© 2014 Penny Cherubino copy

Just as it only took one smoker to create this pile of cigarette litter (almost all the same brand) outside a Back Bay residence, it only takes one scofflaw with a dog to mess up an entire block over the course of a few weeks.

    It Only Takes One …

Shame on those who decided that since they were out there alone with no one in view, they didn’t have to pick up after their dog.

As with many social problems, a small number of people are at the core of the issue. As I used to say to one particularly nasty dog hater who expressed her displeasure with dogs to everyone who passed with leash in hand, “If the vast majority of us didn’t pick up after our dogs, you'd be knee deep in it.”

    April Stools Day

If dog haters and people without dogs in their lives are upset over this issue, you can only imagine how maddening it is to those of us who do it right. What’s more, many of us with bag already in hand have been trying to clean up after those who give the dog community this black eye.

Portland, Maine has addressed this winter scofflaw problem with humor since the year 2000. Each April, responsible members of the dog community declare an “April Stools Day,” when dog lovers come out in force to clean up the parks. Portland’s day is official and includes event extras. But, around here, anyone with a bag can add goodness to the next day of sunshine with a visit to their favorite dog walking area to pick up a few extra droppings.

April is a busy month with the Boston Marathon and other events making hotel rooms expensive and restaurant reservations scarce.

Easter Sunday April 4th & Passover April 4th-11th

On Easter Sunday, you'll find special menus in many restaurants. If you have suggestions for places not doing this or alternative dining suggestions for Easter, please add them. And, Passover is a great time to enjoy some of the special kosher foods that are easier to find at this time.

Patriots Day Weekend/Boston Marathon & other BAA races 18th to the 20th

The Boston Athletic Association is expecting 30,000 runners and half a million spectators for the Marathon on April 20th. There are other races and marathon related events all weekend.

There will be road closures and changes in MBTA routes surrounding the Marathon course. Here are some links to information on those aspects of the race.

If you need to get somewhere on Marathon Monday – before the roads close – try to place yourself on the side of the course that will allow you to get where you're going.

    • April 1st – New Food Truck Schedules go into effect with a few new trucks and new spots for some of your old favorites.
    • April 3-5 is the Anime Boston event at the Hynes Convention Center. This is a fun time to walk the area and take photos of the people dressed as their favorite characters. Most of them love to pose. If you're in town for some other reason, this is just a short lived event, not how Bostonians dress.
    • April 18 – Greenway Spring Food Festival: Noon to 4:00 p.m. Some of our favorite food trucks will be on hand.

  • Boston’s Number One Taxi

    IMG_1692 - Version 22015-03-10- boston-taxi-number-1-© 2015 Penny Cherubino

Driving down Mass Ave, we spotted Boston taxi medallion number 1 and Massachusetts taxi license plate number 1.

Someone has to be number 1, but this is just a happenstance. What would make a taxi number 1 (meaning the best) in your opinion?

    Essential for us is:

    • A clean cab: especially no odor of smoke or sickening air fresheners.
    • A driver who is not on the phone or eating while driving.
    • Seat belts that are easy to use without part of it tucked under the seat.
    • Radio not shared with back seat passengers.
    • Credit card use available even if we don't intend to use it.
    • A driver who knows where he or she is going.
    • A driver who avoids or at least doesn't drive into a traffic jam. And, when driving around a jam, explain what you are doing.

What would you like to see added to Boston's Taxi rules.

    • An available light on the top of the cab the way it's done in NYC.
    • A Boston Hackney Unit app that would let you rate cabs by medallion number the way UBER lets you rate drivers and would let you report bad behavior in a quick efficient manner.
    • A tracking app for taxis like the one for UBER so you know your cab is on the way. (Note: clicking on this UBER link to join will give you and us a bonus.)
    • A serious fine for sitting outside a building blowing the taxi's horn to notify a passenger that you have arrived. Your passenger may not be near the front of the building, so you are only annoying people who do live near the door.

What's on your list? What would take you back to using cabs again?

  • Collateral Damage as the Snow Melts

All over Boston, we are seeing collateral damage as the snow melts. Everyone is complaining about the litter left behind by irresponsible people and the trash that was never picked up by the city. But, in some cases, the damage was done as the city cleared the snow.

    IMG_8144 - Version 22015-03-23-buried-bench-commonwealth-avenue-mall-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

You may be surprised to see a shorter bench on the Hereford to Gloucester block of the Commonwealth Avenue Mall.

    DSC_5216 - Version 22015-03-12-brokens-bench-commonwealth-avenue-mall-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

The other two sections of it were destroyed by a plow cleaning a path in the park. The driver decided to push the excess snow off to the side and took out the bench as that was done.

    IMG_8147 - Version 22015-03-23-shredded-signs-commonwealth-avenue-mall-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

And, as the big snow harvester cleared the parking lanes along Commonwealth Avenue in the latter days of the snow removal, the machine shredded the No Parking for Snow Removal signs that were placed in the snowbanks. Now, they are chewed up splinters of wood and cardboard that will remain scattered on the grass as it emerges.

With that in mind, be careful as you walk your dogs on the Mall. We are spreading the word among park regulars and will try to pick up as many of the dangerous slivers as we can in the days ahead. Earlier this week, we met a new neighbor and her dog while she was filling a shopping bag with litter.

So, as the warm up comes, put on your work gloves, grab a bag, and a pair of long tongs (kept for this purpose) and do the "Duke Walk." If you don't know about that, it is named after former Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis who walks the walk instead of just talking the talk. More on that here.

Where are the Leaders & Crowd Favorites?

For a rough idea of where the race leaders are, in relation to your viewing position, watch the sky for the helicopters that hover above them.

For favorites, you must rely on the roar of the crowd as they approach. Or, you can track your favorite by using the mobile alert system.

This Canon PowerShot G15 camera will give you what you need to take stills and video at the event. Canon's G series is our all-time favorite for everyday cameras. We own the G10 and G11. They are a little bigger than the compacts most people use, but let you shoot with automatic settings or easy-to-use manual controls that please the many pros who use them as second cameras. And, if you are ready to turn pro, follow our lead. Ed shoots with the Nikon D7000 Digital SLR too and we've added the Nikon D600 to our camera fleet and are extremely happy with the performance it has delivered.

  • What’s on Your Spring Dog Adventure List?

In my mind, I've been thinking about the places I've missed and want to visit once the snow clears and the temperatures become more inviting for long outside adventures.

    6a00e54fc42bb8883401a3fcc4011b970b-800wi

I was looking through past Sunday Dog posts for ideas when I came across these photos of our pal Greer from last March. She loves a good roll in the snow.

    6a00e54fc42bb8883401a51173cf92970c-800wi

These were taken just after she and Poppy joined four of us for a lunch on the Common. While there was snow on the ground, it was warm enough for dining outside. I look forward to meeting up with some of our regular dog walking pals and having a bench picnic or taking a table at a place that accommodates dogs near their patio.

    6a00e54fc42bb88834017744c4db65970d-800wi

Beach Walks are also high on our family list. Poppy, as a puppy, had a dangerous habit of eating sand. We hope that as her third birthday approaches, she will prance down the beach, head up, and tail wagging. The delivery trucks and noisy construction crews that are her fear trigger seldom appear on the sand.

So what's on your list. We'd love to feature some of your favorite dog destinations in upcoming Sunday Dog pieces.

Add your thoughts in the comments below. Tweet them to @BostonZest or send us an email and we'll expand the list.

    Spring Conditioning

As you meet friends and extend your dog walks as the weather improves, remember that both you and your dog may need to ease into the extra exercise. If your walks have been short over the winter, don’t take on a five mile stroll around the city without watching to see if your team is up to the distance.

Paws that were covered in boots for months may be tender, so check them both on the road and after walks. Sudden heat may be too much for puppies or senior dogs. Make sure you give any dog showing signs of fatigue a break. And, put a bottle of water near your leash since the season for carrying water for our dogs will soon be upon us.

  • Doin’ the Pothole Dance!

After our dreadful winter season, Public Works has a lot of potholes, like these in Copley Square, ready for filling.

    IMG_1392 - Version 22015-03-18-pot-hole-filling-boston-public-works-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

It takes choreographed teamwork to get the job done. These guys know how to do the pothole dance. A runner on her way by joined in.

    IMG_1397 - Version 22015-03-18-pot-hole-filling-boston-public-works-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

And, between patches, there's time to sing the pothole song.

    IMG_1380 - Version 22015-03-18-pot-hole-filling-boston-public-works-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

The tamper adds the rhythm track.

On a more serious note, you can report potholes on the Citizens Connect app. "Pothole" is a quick choice on the current selection of topics. These change from season to season. This week's array reflects the problems we're all seeing around the city.

  • March 19th Is Zeppole Day!

When it comes to Saints' Days, March 19th, Saint Joseph's Day has corned beef and cabbage and green beer beaten by a mile with a great Italian pastry, Zeppole or Zeppole di San Giuseppe. Some bakeries will keep selling these until Easter but check before you make a special trip.

    6a00e54fc42bb8883401a511977aba970c-800wi

Many of the delicious Zeppole we've found in Boston (like the one above from Modern Pastry in the North End) are big enough to share.

    5906312247_a185df3af4_b

Photo by Kyle Bruggeman, Nebraska News21 used under this creative commons license.

When we lived in Providence, we would buy much smaller Zeppole by the dozen like donuts (which is sort of what they are) from Federal Hill bakeries.

Here's a video that shows one way these little beauties are made. This smaller, baked version is the style that Penny, a native Rhode Islander, first knew. Today, we both enjoy the giant Boston-style and are most willing to get out and try your favorites if you'll let us know where to find them.

What is your source for Zeppole and what style do you love? Add your thoughts in the comments below. Tweet them to @BostonZest or send us an email and we'll add your suggestions to this post as an update.

And, if you want to know more about the history of this pastry, I refer you to one of my favorite food writers, Clifford Wright. I'd rather call him a food scholar. His cookbooks are amazing reference manuals.

  • Snow Drops, Crocus & Daffodils Popping Up in the Back Bay

Most years, I start looking for the first signs of spring right after Valentine's Day. This year, it was nearly Saint Patrick's Day when I spotted sprouts in the Back Bay, yesterday.

    IMG_8123 - Version 22015-03-15-boston-snow-drops-commonwealth-avenue-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

The snow drops are blooming along the edge of this garden.

    IMG_8116 - Version 22015-03-15-boston-crocus-commonwealth-avenue-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

Those grassy sprouts will be crocus in a few days.

    IMG_8118 - Version 22015-03-15-boston-daffodils-commonwealth-avenue-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

And, these green goodies will be daffodils if they are springing from the same bulbs as last year.

    IMG_8131 - Version 22015-03-15-boston-snow-drops-commonwealth-avenue-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

It's happening! The snow is melting and the bulbs are blooming. We may make it to spring yet.
