  • Mary Chung Dun Dun Noodle Craving– Satisfied!

    IMG_4675 - Version 22012-02-16-mary-chung-dan dan-noodles-chicken-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

All you have to say is Mary Chung and Penny starts craving Dun Dun Noodles. (The noodles are hiding under all that lovely, spicy topping in the photo above.)

Last week, the crew over on Boston Chowhound began a discussion of Chinese and Chinese-American food, so of course Mary Chung was included. That was enough to put it on our lunch list. We arrived at 12:30 pm and had to wait a few minutes for a table. It's good to see an old favorite still filling the seats on a Thursday afternoon.

We're convinced that the Sichuan pepper in those Dun Dun noodles is addictive. It numbs your mouth just enough to make you receptive to the chili oil and other heat-makers in the dish. You have to make yourself stop reaching for the noodle bowl so you can try the other dishes on the table.

    IMG_4673 - Version 22012-02-16-mary-chung-aspargus-pork-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

In our case, this included one of the daily specials, this wonderful, fresh, crisp plate of aspargus and pork. While the printed menu is giant, always check the daily specials taped to the register area up front.

    IMG_4664 - Version 22012-02-16-mary-chung-stir fry-peking-ravioli-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

And, we did have to take home the leftovers because we couldn't resist starting with the pan fried Peking ravioli.

This Central Square, Cambridge institution has been delivering great Chinese food for years. Reviewers mention that it's been around since the early 1980s. And, this is a perfect place to gather a group and fill one of the big round tables with shared food.

Do you have a favorite Mary Chung menu item? Please tell us, we want to get out of our ordering rut and work our way through the menu!

    Tips:

    • Check those specials.
    • They do a type of Dim Sum on weekends.
    • You can reserve a table for a group, and if you want it on a weekend, call early.
    • Order rice if you want it.
    • They only take cash so come prepared.
    • They do serve beer and wine, but somehow the pots of tea they put on the table seem perfect with the food.

     We saw:

    • Newbury Street filled with shoppers on Sunday.
    • Happy diners eating outside at La Voile and at Tasty Burger. (Warning: There's music on La Voile's site.)
    • Students studying on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall.
    • Lots of spring plants sprouting in Back Bay gardens. The snowdrops have been up for weeks and some crocuses, pansies, and heather are already in bloom.

Sometimes the freelance life lets you stretch your long weekend by an extra day or, at least, fit in more fun around your work hours. It was that kind of weekend for us.

We began with a trip to Central Square, Cambridge for lunch on Thursday. The afternoon began at Mary Chung Restaurant for a bit of Szechuan heat. (Stay tuned! Details on that will pop up tomorrow.)

We strolled home with stops at Central Bottle to stock up on cheese, bread, beer, and wine for the weekend and Flour Bakery for two pieces of their fabulous Boston Cream Pie cake to honor a friend's birthday. (And, to tease him with another reason to miss Boston from his new home in San Francisco!)

Friday afternoon found us at Coppa enjoying a few of our favorites– including this Italian Grinder.

Saturday, we shared a tray at Sweet Cheeks Q and added a new favorite side dish that will also be featured here in the days ahead.

We ran into lots of friends in lots of places and had some down time at home with a bit of great wine and home cooking. It was a good weekend to spend in town enjoying some of the great things Boston has to offer.

Today may be the Federal holiday called Presidents' Day, but in Massachusetts today is officially Washington's Birthday.

And, this year, on Thursday the 22nd, you can tour the house in Cambridge that served as Washington's headquarters during the Siege of Boston. Details of the change are here.

The Parks Service Invites You to:

  • Sunday Cat, Sophia and Her Glass Harmonica

    DSC_0889 - Version 22012-01-22-sophia-bauer-cat-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Wine shop cat Sophia pawsing for our BostonZest cameras as she practiced her bottle-browsing technique at Bauer Wine & Spirits. This 9-month-old cutey is impossible to ignore as she seemingly grows more adventurous and entertaining by the day.

We’re not really sure whether Sophia is checking the wine inventory or learning to play the glass harmonica– an under-appreciated instrument (a version of which was) invented by Ben Franklin in 1761. As far back as the Renaissance, people were making sounds by rubbing the rim of a wine goblet with moistened fingers, so damp paws could work.

Whatever this playful feline is up to, we wanted to share her photo and hope it makes you smile. Sophia, you are one special cat!

  • Get Out and Count the Birds…

     Birds

The 15th annual Great Backyard Bird Count is our Friday link. This weekend, they invite you to join the annual check of our feathered friends.

A big thank you to The Garden Club of the Back Bay for bringing this, and so many other wonderful opportunities to have fun and learn something new, to our attention. (That makes this a double Friday Link!)

The Great Backyard Bird Count says:

"Warmer temperatures and lack of snow in parts of North America are setting the stage for what could be a most intriguing 15th annual Great Backyard Bird Count, coming up February 17-20."

    We Say:

This is the perfect excuse to get outside and enjoy nature.

If you enter your zip code, the site will prepare a checklist of the birds you might see in your area. That can be fun to have anytime and a great start on the peaceful pastime of birdwatching. We're saving our list and will continue looking all year to see how many birds we find by this time next year.

  • 21st Century Lamplighters Arrive in Historic Boston

    Lamplighter

While Boston’s historic gas-powered street lamps still need to be lit, the 21st century lamplighter looks a lot different then our friend pictured above.

    DSC_1310 - Version 22012-02-09-solar-assisted-gas-streetlights- boston-back-bay-marlborough-street-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Last week, Michael Doyle and his colleagues from the Boston Public Works Street Lighting Division installed 12 new solar-assisted gas light fixtures on Marlborough Street. This is a test of a new technology designed to save money by having gas street lights turn on when needed, rather than remain on 24 hours a day.

    PMC_7202 - Version 22012-02-09-solar-assisted-gas-streetlights- boston-back-bay-marlborough-street-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Here’s a closer look at the system as it was being installed. The solar panel charges a battery. A photo sensor tells the system when light is needed, and a control opens the gas valve and lights the lamp. In daylight, the control turns off the gas.

    PMC_7213 - Version 22012-02-09-solar-assisted-gas-streetlights- boston-back-bay-marlborough-street-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

This crew had just come from Thompson Square in Charlestown where they’d installed 8 similar units. According to the Charlestown Patriot-Bridge, the plan to give a solar assist to hundreds of gas lamps throughout the city of Boston is expected to save hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

    DSC_1325 - Version 22012-02-09-solar-assisted-gas-streetlights- boston-back-bay-marlborough-street-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Officials claim the lamp’s battery can last almost 3 weeks without sunlight and won’t need replacing for at least 5 years. Now, that's a Lamplighter!

  • 7 Things We Learned at the BPL Conservation Lab!

     DSC_0971 - Version 22012-01-25-boston-public-lilbrary-conservation-lab-rebinding-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

After a rebinding, this Liber Chronicarum (Nuremberg Chronicle) from 1493 now opens completely.

Penny and I recently had the chance to go behind the scenes at the Boston Public Library’s (BPL) Conservation Lab to meet the talented experts who are preserving history one piece at a time! These specialists repair and stabilize rare books and documents to ensure that these items remain available to all of us.

    DSC_0957 - Version 32012-01-25-boston-public-lilbrary-conservation-lab-rebinding-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Keeper of Special Collections at the BPL, Susan L. Glover (above) put it best, “They are wonderfully skilled, they are passionate, they are dedicated, and what they do looks like magic.”

We were so impressed, here are:

7 Things We Learned at the BPL Conservation Lab!

    • The lab is only able to get to about 1% of the work that is needed.
    • Some items can deteriorate just sitting on a shelf due to material content.

    DSC_0964 - Version 22012-01-25-boston-public-lilbrary-conservation-lab-rebinding-medieval-manuscript-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Conservation Assistant, Chris Letizia tests leather to bind a 12th Century illuminated manuscript.

And, here are their recommendations for your own items.

    • Keep your valued pieces out of direct sunlight, away from acidic paper.
    • Don’t store personal treasures (clipping, letters, etc) in basements (too humid) or attics (too hot).
    • Handle them little, keep them unfolded in folders or archival albums.
    • Never use any kind of household tape to make repairs.
    • If you discover what might be an important item, contact the BPL Conservation Lab for advice and recommendations.  (617-536-5400)

  • Thai Chili from The Dining Car Food Truck

    DSC_1298 - Version 22012-02-07-thai-chili-rice-crackers-dining-car-food-truck-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

On a mild winter day there is nothing like a bowl of Thai Chili from The Dining Car food truck to warm you inside and out. This is my current favorite nosh from one of the best of the street food vendors. And, the bonus item is that this totally brilliant team serves it with shrimp chips. You can dip or do what I do– spoon a pile of chili on a shrimp chip and nibble away.

Insider Tip: If you're carrying this back home or to the office, keep it level or ask the team to put your shrimp chips in a separate bag. You don't want any chili to get on those lovely crisp, delicate chips and make them soggy.

Ed & I usually catch up with The Dining Car outside the Boston Public Library, where we happen to spend a lot of time researching stuff for our freelance work.

    IMG_4641 - Version 22012-02-07-dining-car-menu-board-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

This is one recipe that I'm going to use as a base for a chili of my own. The menu board says it has ground pork, simmered with red chilies, ginger, lemongrass, and coconut milk. That's a good starting point for me to develop my own Thai Chili.

Of course, I'll still have to enjoy this one while it's available. But, food trucks do change up the menu frequently, so I'll have to have a backup plan for seasons when they're putting the emphasis on warmer weather fare.
