  • At The Market: Central Boston Farmers’ Markets Closing Dates

    DSC_8027 - Version 22013-09-03-artistan-food-farmers-markets-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Every year, I’m surprised when I see fewer shoppers at area farmers’ markets after Labor Day. Many farmers’ markets run well into autumn, with a few open until Thanksgiving. So, make time in your week to support these good people who bring fresh food to the city.

"Where is human nature so weak as in the bookstore?"

    Henry Ward Beecher – US abolitionist & clergyman (1813 – 1887)

This customer brought his own seat. He didn't realize that he could have stacked up a pile of books as a seat or a table.

Henry Ward Beecher also said: "Books are not made for furniture, but there is nothing else that so beautifully furnishes a house."

If books are one of your weaknesses, you should make regular trips to the Brattle Book Shop on West Street (map) near the Boston Common. These photos were taken in their outdoor bargain book annex.

  • A Stir Fry with an Eastern European Twist: Kielbasa, Cabbage, and Apple

Once you master the technique of making a stir fry, you can take that cooking method out of Asian cuisine and apply it to another culture.

    Kielbasa-cabbage-apple-onion-

    Kielbasa, cabbage, and apple stir-fry.

One of my favorite cool weather stir fries is this one with cabbage, kielbasa, apple, and onion. A bit of apple cider creates a broth. Some garlic, juniper, and mustard seeds add some spice.

Where will you take your stir fry skills? Do you toss together a dish that is basically a stir fry but is inspired by a culture other than Asian? Please, share your ideas with us.

The pan in this photo has become the work horse of my kitchen during the past year. It just fits our cooking-for-two lifestyle. It's the All-Clad Stainless Steel 4 Quart Essential Pan with Lid. It works for stir fries, soups, and stews.
