  • Doin’ the Pothole Dance!

After our dreadful winter season, Public Works has a lot of potholes, like these in Copley Square, ready for filling.

It takes choreographed teamwork to get the job done. These guys know how to do the pothole dance. A runner on her way by joined in.

And, between patches, there's time to sing the pothole song.

The tamper adds the rhythm track.

On a more serious note, you can report potholes on the Citizens Connect app. "Pothole" is a quick choice on the current selection of topics. These change from season to season. This week's array reflects the problems we're all seeing around the city.

  • Where to Dine in Boston on Easter, April 5, 2015

Those in the know already have reservations for Easter brunch and dinner. This is one of the big days for dining out, and popular restaurants will fill their tables for Sunday, April 5, 2015 quickly.

    6a00e54fc42bb8883401310f8e20ba970c-800wi

First up, the list of places that organize information about Easter reservations and special offerings.

Open Table seems to have the most complete information, and you can click right through to make reservations. They also give you some idea of prices and special menus. And, you'll find a few places that are offering their regular menus as well.

Boston Chefs has a list of offerings from their member chefs and restaurants.

Gayot lists favorite Easter brunches at places like Henrietta's Table in Cambridge.

Next, places we picked from these lists (we'll add more as we learn about particular offerings)

Bistro du Midi recently added brunch to their weekly offering but that menu will not be available on Easter. However, you may want to try some other weekend. For Easter they have a three course Prix Fixe menu. And, you can plan a walk through the Public Garden after your meal.

Craigie on Main is offering both an Easter Prix Fixe menus and special additions to their regular menu for Passover.

To meet up with family who don't want to come into the city, consider AKA Bistro in Lincoln. We're happy to see that they're offering their regular brunch menu in addition to some Easter specials. The nearby deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum is the perfect place to walk off your brunch and take Easter photos.

    Update: 03/17/15

Dante Restaurant is one of those delightful places offering their regular a la carte menu with special additions for Easter according to their listing on Boston Chefs.

    Update: 03/22/15

One of our favorite spots in Boston, Coppa Enoteca has announced that they will provide an a la cart option as well. Boston Chefs says, "Spend Easter with Coppa in the South End and their menu of shareable Italian dishes. Reservations are recommended. Seatings from: 11:00am-8:00pm.s

    6a00e54fc42bb888340163026d8474970d-800wi

Don't be surprised if some places require a credit card to secure the reservation. This is the type of holiday when some people would try to book multiple restaurants and decide where to go at the last moment. That can cause the restaurant to turn away other potential customers and makes the venues require a deposit to hold a place.

One thing we would look for, if we were dining out on a holiday, is a place that is offering its regular menu for the day. That's always a plus for us. We're not fans of special menus.

If you know of places where the regular menu will be served, let us know. If it's a place we can recommend, we'll add it to our list. And, we'll add updates and links to this post as we find them. Check back here or follow us on Twitter to learn about updates!

    Opting Out of Easter

If this holiday stuff is really not part of your life, this is a great day to go ethnic. Chinatown will be wide open and filled with great menu options. Your neighborhood Indian, Korean, Chinese, or Persian restaurant will be happy to feed you. And, most BBQ and Pizza places do not have Easter menus.

Sign-up for the comment feed or follow us on Twitter for a notice, if we add updates to this page.

  • Do You Have a Question for BostonZest?

We're making BostonZest readers our Friday Link today. BostonZest began in 2004 because so many of our friends and neighbors had been asking us questions about Boston. We started this website with some of those answers and a decade later we're still adding to it. We love questions from readers and today we're reminding you to send them our way.

Screen Shot 2015-03-06 at Friday, March 6, 20157.29.52 AM

    Sharing Readers' Favorites

The current version of BostonZest has more than 2,500 posts on dozens of topics. When we look at our readers' favorites, we find that many of the ones read over and over answer specific questions. What's going on in March? How do I deal with crystallized honey?  Where can I find a Winter Farmers' Market Schedule?

We've begun to feature some of our readers' favorite posts like Boston Area Commencement Dates, Spring 2015. You'll often see these on Wednesdays. We'll keep a popular post at the top of our page for a day and send a link to our followers on Twitter. (By the way, our list of colleges grew as readers provided information on their schools.)

    6a00e54fc42bb8883401bb07a1c77e970d-800wi

    Answering Your Questions

We love to answer questions sent to us by readers. Sometimes they are follow-up questions on something we have posted – like a conversation we had about artichokes last summer. In our first post on the topic, reader Mich Connors commented on the difficulty in pairing wine with artichokes and asked a question about the seasonality of the crop.

That gave us the opportunity to do a second interview with the farmer in the article and share how they grew a fall crop of artichokes in a follow-up post.

So, ask your questions or share an answer. You can send us an email, add a comment or question on any post or follow us on Twitter. (Just put @BostonZest in your tweet and we'll get it.)

  • Colorful, Bright, New Community Workspace at the Boston Public Library

What a difference a renovation makes. The second floor of the Johnson Building at the Boston Public Library (BPL) in Copley Square has been transformed in spectacular before-and-after fashion.

    CHE_5945 - Version 22015-02-19-Boston-public-library-2nd-floor-renovation-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

Last week, I took a tour of the changes with Michael Colford, Director of Library Services. He is understandably proud of the look, convenience, and user friendliness of this renovation.

    CHE_5958 - Version 22015-02-19-Boston-public-library-2nd-floor-renovation-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

I choose these bar seats along the arched window overlooking Boylston Street as my favorite spot.

Michael pointed out that the library’s circulating nonfiction collection is located here. Amid the book stacks holding 200,000 books is a community reading area and places for individual and group work. This will be a lively section of the building where conversations will take place. The McKim building will provide quiet space for those who prefer a place to work without distractions.

    CHE_5967 - Version 22015-02-19-Boston-public-library-2nd-floor-renovation-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

Lower book shelves open up the area allowing the light from the windows and from many new fixtures to provide a bright and welcoming workspace. I was also happy to see some of the materials like the lovely Windsor chairs reconditioned, recycled, and fitting beautifully into the new setting.

    CHE_5965 - Version 22015-02-19-Boston-public-library-2nd-floor-renovation-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

And still, there are spots where you can get off by yourself for a bit of quiet texting.

    IMG_8066 - Version 22015-02-24-renovation-Boylston-street-library-public-back-bay-boston© 2014 Penny Cherubino

Lots of new electrical outlets also give you a place to charge up your phone, laptop or tablet.

    CHE_5976 - Version 22015-02-19-Boston-public-library-2nd-floor-renovation-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

There are new airport-style restrooms on the floor and multi-function water fountains with a separate station to fill your water bottle. And, yes, water bottles are allowed in this section of the library.

    CHE_5987 - Version 22015-02-19-Boston-public-library-2nd-floor-renovation-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

Along with the new look, you will also find some changes in the way the library and librarians communicate with patrons. The bookshelves will be marked not only in traditional Library of Congress Classification fashion, but also with signs and banners that let you know, for example, that this section houses books on Politics and Law.

When the flow of traffic at the information desk allows, librarians will move around the floor to answer questions and assist patrons as they search for materials. The openness of the new design will allow staff members to see when they are needed back at the desk.

    IMG_8067 - Version 22015-02-24-renovation-Boylston-street-library-public-back-bay-boston© 2014 Penny Cherubino

Digital displays around the floor will highlight items from the BPL's renowned Collections of Distinction. This will remind patrons of all the resources, beyond the books on the shelves, that are available to them within the walls of this building.

    CHE_5977 - Version 22015-02-19-Boston-public-library-2nd-floor-renovation-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

A press release from the BPL explained that service kiosks like this one (now found in other parts of the library and branches as well), "are part of the library’s upgraded pay for print system and have several features, including the introduction of paying for printing via standard credit and debit cards. Boston Public Library cards will now store up to $21 for use on the system."

    Anna-300x217

Along with opening this floor last Saturday, the Boylston Street entrance has also reopened. A corridor has been built for library visitors to move through the first floor where work on the next phase of this renovation continues. For those of us who are in the habit of using that entrance, this is most welcome.

I look forward to using this workspace, both when I need a change from my home office and when I want to collaborate with friends and associates on a project.

  • Here’s My Favorite Weather App – Dark Sky

Weather has been the topic of the month for February 2015. So, today, I'm going to share my favorite source for weather information.

    IMG_1391 copy

Here's a temperature screenshot from Dark Sky on my iPhone.

Ed, with his background in radio, still checks to see what various stations are forecasting. On the other hand, I have narrowed down my primary weather advisor to a favorite weather app.

    Dark Sky

The app that talks to me all day, sending me notifications about weather changes that I can use, is Dark Sky with Weather Radar, Hyperlocal Forecasts, and Storm Alerts. It has been very busy this month letting me know that flurries, light snow, heavy snow, or snow was coming soon. It also has simple, sensible, easy to understand visuals that let me plan my day and my week.

While alerts are often something you knew was going to happen, occasionally weather changes pop up without warning. Last summer, we were walking our dog about a mile from home when Dark Sky alerted me that heavy rain was coming, soon.

We turned for home and caught up with a neighbor and her dogs along the way. We told her it was going to rain hard and how we knew. She doubted the prediction but walked along with us. We were nearly home when the sky opened and the rain came down. Naturally, she wanted the name of the app.

Screen Shot 2015-02-19 at Thursday, February 19, 20154.15.10 PM

Dark Sky is a paid app, but you can get the same information on any computer at the Forcast.io – their web version. One thing I love about this app is the "Time Machine" option. It lets you see what the weather was any day in the past.

Screen Shot 2015-02-19 at Thursday, February 19, 20154.20.59 PM

Here's what the weather was on this day in 1971. Go ahead and look up your birthday, anniversary or this date last year.

  • What’s Happening Around Boston in February 2015

Okay team, it's time for us to share some of the pastimes and events that we're looking forward to this February.

    DSC_1721 - Version 22013-01-16-phylis statue black history month© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Abolitionist Lucy Stone gazes at slave Phillis Wheatley on the Boston Women's Memorial on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall.

    Black History Month

This month has a theme, Black History Month, that fits into Boston's historical culture. The people of Boston were an important part of the abolitionist movement. We have a wonderful Black Heritage Trail and this year the Museum of Fine arts has some exceptional offerings like the Gordon Parks exhibition. In a city with so much history, it can be good to focus on one aspect like this, from time to time.

    6a00e54fc42bb8883401b7c6d21550970b-800wi

Abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison sits two blocks away on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall.

    February Events

If you're a visitor to Boston, you should know that we have a long weekend on February 14-16 to celebrate Presidents' Day.

That weekend is also Valentine's Day so restaurant and hotel reservations may be a bit tighter. And, Valentine's Day is an event where many restaurants have special prix fixe menus offering less choice, higher prices, and often lower quality. Here's a link our post: Where to Dine Valentine's Day 2015 – Ideas for Romantic Dining in Boston.

On the other hand, some hotels will be offering special romantic packages since this is not the busiest month of the year. Locals might consider a staycation weekend tucked into a romantic hotel in the city.

    Few Conventions This Month

On the convention front, there are just two events that might impact hotel prices. One in the seaport area, where it will have much less impact on the lives of Bostonians and visitors, is projecting about 16,000 visitors from the 4th to the 6th. And, at the Hynes in the Back Bay, 5,000 conventioneers are expected on the 26th and 27th.

Penny has started  this same conversion over on the Trip Advisor Boston Forum to give some background for visitors to our fair city and for the locals who volunteer on that forum to trade ideas with one another. You'll find additional ideas at this link.

    Your Turn

We hope you'll join in and make this a conversation here. Add your comments below or follow us on Twitter and send your ideas to us there. Just put @BostonZest in your message and we'll get it.

    Who's next?

What are your favorite February pastimes?

What events are you planning to attend this month?

  • Look out Below! Snow & Ice Are Falling All over Town

Walking to the market yesterday, we had to keep watch for snow sliding off buildings. Warmer temperatures, snow, and possible rain will lead to even more ice and snow falling from above.

    IMG_1357 - Version 22015-01-29-falling-snow-boston-© 2014 Penny Cherubino

Earlier in the day, Ed had captured these photos of workers shoveling off the roof of a Commonwealth Avenue building to lessen the snow load before the next storm.

Here is where the city of Boston information is posted. You can check this link for other information. We will post updates as we receive them.

    City of Boston Snow Information

Winter storms have an impact on our lives and the city has set up a "Winter in Boston" page with the latest information on things like declared snow emergencies, parking bans, trash schedules, school closings, etc.

    Before The Storm

If you haven't already done it, click over and sign-up for notifications by the City's Emergency notification system. It could save you a parking ticket or a tow.

Adopt a Hydrant – Really great neighbors will locate and note the landmarks to find their nearest fire hydrant and work with one another to dig around it and keep it clear for the entire winter season. This community action can save lives and homes. Sign up here!

If the storm drain near your home is blocked with leaves and debris, you can clear it to prevent flooding when the snow melts.

Find your winter boots, shovels, windshield scrapers, sand, salt, and ice melt. (For the sake of dogs who walk barefoot on sidewalks, please choose a "Paw Safe" option when buying de-icing products.)

And, if you have a car, you may want to park it somewhere that is not signed as a "Snow Emergency Route." Here is a list of the major arteries for the Downtown Boston area with parking restrictions.

Heavy snowfalls can increase the risk for roof collapses. Here are the city's Tips for Protecting Your Roof.

Snow Emergency Parking in Boston Neighborhoods

With a warning that Parking Regulations will be strictly enforced, the city asks of residents:

    "DO

    If Your Car Is Missing

There are off-street parking spaces available to residents during the storm.

Go to this page, choose your neighborhood, and you'll see a list of available parking lots and garages and what they charge under this program for those with designated resident stickers.

Here's the Information on a Map Page

Prices in garages range from $2 (Boston Common Garage) to $15.00 for 24 hours. In some sections of the city, municipal lots are free for those with resident stickers. All of these are on a first come, first serve basis.

    Digging Out

Once snow falls, you see how seldom some cars in Boston are moved. We walk by cars that sit, snow-covered, for weeks on end. If you do dig out your car, you are not supposed to put the snow onto the street or a cleared sidewalk. That adds to the fun of the job.

If you live in a section of the city with a tradition of space savers, the city says those must be and will be removed 48 hours after a snow emergency has been lifted. For those new to this game, "space savers" are chairs, trash cans, and other objects that are placed in cleared and empty parking spaces to save the spot for the person who shoveled it.

Once snow, slush, or ice is on the ground, someone has to remove it from sidewalks.
In the city of Boston and in most surrounding communities, that someone is you or the people you hire to do it for you.

There was a Supreme Court Ruling in the state. The Boston Globe says this means, "property owners now can be held liable for injuries that are linked to any snow and ice on their land, regardless of whether the conditions were caused by nature or a city plow." Here's a link to the full story on that ruling.

In Boston, regulations for Snow Removal from Sidewalks are available on this page.

French Toast Alert System & Best Local Coverage from Universal Hub

If you're new to the area or haven't been paying attention, you may not know this term. French Toast Alert comes from the rush to grocery stores for basic provisions (milk, bread, and eggs) when storms are predicted. Here's a link to the master page of the official French Toast Alert system for this area.

On a more serious note, we turn to Universal Hub for the best local information on what is going on around the city during breaking news events. Adam and his Universal Hub community are often far better sources of information than much of the Boston broadcast media.
