Provincetown “Frenchie” with a Stand-in!

On every Provincetown visit we make a point of checking out some of our favorite gardens. This one, on Commercial Street, had a new addition– a Frenchie sculpture.

Suddenly, the real star emerged from the house, and granted a brief, private photo op!

And, just as abruptly, returned to seclusion, leaving the stand-in to deal with the next admirers!

Thanks for coming out to see us, little Frenchie!

Sunday Dog, Ginger Has a New Home!

Ginger is a very lucky Sheltie, she’s found a new home in Boston. Actually, this four year old beauty told us that the finding part was done by her new person with the help of New England Sheltie Rescue. Ginger admitted, “I never made it to the available page [of the website] … I had a perfect applicant waiting for me!”

As soon as we saw this pair, it was obvious they were a match that was meant to be.

Ginger had only been in town for a week (when these photos were taken), but already seemed comfortable with the neighborhood. She came right up to us to say hello and get pats. Her new pal told us, “She goes up to every dog, no matter how big, and they don’t growl at her. She’s not afraid. She’s so friendly.”

More formally known as a Shetland Sheepdog this Scottish breed is extremely loyal, loves to please, and is very good at taking direction. In fact, when it comes to brain power, Shelties are ranked sixth in Stanley Coren’s “The Intelligence of Dogs.”

After spending some quality time together, we left Ginger to keep an eye out for more new friends. She’ll undoubtedly develop a big following. I wonder if she has a facebook page, yet? See ya, girl.

Samantha Golden– One Sweet Sunday Dog

While “sweet” may be an overused term, it is without a doubt the best way to describe Sunday Dog, Samantha. Wait, I take that back. By adding her breed name, it would be: Sweet Samantha Golden, perfect!

In the end, though, I fully realize that if you were to meet this lovely canine, you might use another superlative– I’m sure she wouldn’t mind.

At a year-and-half old, Samantha was plucked from an Alabama kill shelter with the help of petfinder .

When she first arrived home, her people described her as really friendly with people, but afraid of all dogs. Since moving to the city, this beauty has adjusted very well and now has many furry, four-legged friends.

Samantha never fetched or played with a ball until two months ago, when suddenly, at seven-and-a-half, she began running and chasing balls! While no one seems to know why, she told us privately, that she simply has acquired a taste for them…

Favorite Toy? Stuffed Animals– she has about 20. If someone pets her and has a scarf on, she’ll grab it and try to walk away with the prize.

She sleeps with her people every night, no matter how hot it is. And, like so many of her friends, is not a fan of thunder.

However, this gentle, loving girl is a big fan of pats, and lots of them! They’re just part of the perks of being Sweet Samantha Golden.

Sunday Dog, Odis “Loves Everyone!”

We always look forward to seeing Odis– this Sunday Dog loves everyone! He always has a way of making you feel special, as if you’re the only one in the room.

Odis was catching some spring rays in the park, the other day, and didn’t see us approach. As soon as he realized he had company, this spunky little guy grabbed his toy and rushed over to greet us.

While Odis loves toys, his favorite is “anything new.” His person explained that he gets a new toy every couple of weeks. Like so many of us, he loves presents, and even knows the word!

Did somebody say, "Present?"

Odis also loves cheese, doesn’t like skateboards, treasures walks, and always wants the bed to himself, “He’s a Dachshund, so he likes to burrow.” And, “he messes up the bed pretty well.”

Odis will turn six in June, so we’re guessing that’ll mean another present…

Uh-h-h, sorry boy… But, June isn’t all that far away. Happy Birthday, Odis!

Sunday Dogs, Stark and Izzy– Hunters and Homebodies

Stark and Izzy are Small Munsterlanders– a much loved breed as both hunters and homebodies. We chose these two not only to discover more about their heritage, but also because they're obviously a couple of characters with energy to burn!

Eleven-year-old Stark shows off those well-known retrieving skills. Small Munsterlanders are natural athletes that like to be in motion– on land and in the water, as four-year-old Izzy so expertly demonstrates.

Besides a love of the water, the American Kennel Club praises to the breed for its great stamina and speed.

Other characteristics, including high intelligence and a strong will, often mean training is best accomplished by a knowledgeable and skilled owner.

Training? As for Stark and Izzy, their person does field trials with them, and we’re sure they’re very good.

The Small Munsterlander can be quite a skilled hunting partner, as well as a happy, loving member of the family (talk about depth). It’s a breed described as loyal, affectionate, and very social– whether their pack consists of humans or other animals.

Enough said, we’re totally impressed! That’s why Stark and Izzy are our Sunday Dogs.

Sunday Dog Wilson, the Fastest Tongue in Boston!

Wilson not only has the fastest, but also the most accurate tongue in all of Boston! Of course, you wouldn’t know it to look at this handsome little guy, but when you’re this good, there’s absolutely no need to brag.

Besides, maintaining a low profile preserves the element of surprise. A “Lightning Licker,” as they’re known in the trade, can be quite the cunning character. This extraordinarily talented actor might pretend to be following a scent, when he’s actually moving into position.

Or, as Wilson so expertly demonstrates, there’s the classic “Staring Off into the Distance” pose– often employed just before the final set-up. This crafty canine appears to be in a trance-like state, but it’s a sure sign that he’s about to strike!

A blur of pink extends toward his target as Wilson lunges in for a landing. Notice the body extension and fluid form that propels him toward his destination. You can tell, it’s not his first time.

And, we have Touchdown! What precision! What grace! (Your Applause, Here)

Mr. Beagle Taking His Friend for a Walk

We were waiting to go for a stroll with our Greyhound friend Greer when we spotted this busy Beagle boy taking a favorite toy for a walk.

He didn't have time to stop and chat, so we didn't even get his name. As you can see, he was really busy showing this cuddly critter a bit of the outside world. His walker told us she didn't know which toy it was– he had grabbed it on the way out the door.

Have fun, Mr Beagle. Hope your little pal made it all the way back to the toy box.

Catching Up with a Favorite Sunday Dog, Riley!

It’s no secret (at least not anymore) that one of our favorite Sunday Dogs is a sweetheart named Riley. We hadn’t seen her in quite a while until a chance meeting the other day gave us all some much needed time to do a bit of catching up.

Riley was so happy to see us, that she was willing to give up a tasty stick to say hello. We were honored.

I’ll never forget the first time we saw this gorgeous Golden. She was quite little and hard at play with a Doberman puppy friend named Lola. They were both trying to dig their way to China– and probably would have made it, if we hadn’t distracted them.

At 2 ½, Riley has grown into a beautiful and loving companion with an incredibly gentle soul. Her person told us how she’d lucked out with Riley. But, we think they lucked out with each other.

Meet Hudson, He Doesn’t Need a Dog License!

That's because this adorable Chihuahua puppy is only four months old. He has settled into the Back Bay with his special person and is filling her heart with joy. He will need a license once he reaches six months.

For the rest of the pups, applications for the 2012 Boston Dog Licenses have been arriving in area homes. If your dog is currently licensed, you should receive the application in the mail. Under state law, all dogs over the age of six months must be licensed by April 1st of each year.

If you didn't get a Boston Dog license application in the mail, you can download one here.

The list of 2012 Boston Low-Cost Rabies Vaccination Clinics around the state is now posted. This includes the clinics in Boston and those where you can get your license at the same time.

If you get to meet Mr Hudson, you'll quickly learn that he's a charmer who probably should be given a special license for stealing hearts– because he's gonna do that anyway! I'm sure you'll be seeing more of this little guy in our Sunday Dog files.

Sunday Dog, Ruby– the Muse of Newbury Street

The ledgendary muse– long credited with stimulating creative inspiration in the art world– is alive and well on Newbury Street. She goes by the name of Ruby! One look into her big, beautiful eyes could awaken anyone’s artistic talent.

It’s fitting that Ruby comes to work every day at The Society of Arts and Crafts, where she enjoys greeting many of the shop’s visitors, sometimes even pointing out some of her favorite pieces of art.

Ruby is very fond of her toy octopus, but always has time to glance over to see if you have a treat. Penny brought some liver chunks to reward her patience during our photo session. We tried to get some shots of her amazing jumping ability, but this 4 year old was way too fast for our lenses.

Ruby, a rescue from Adopt A Lab.org (they help place other breeds, but labs are their focus) is a sweetheart. She’s very intelligent, loves attention, and adds special character to the shop– everything you’d expect of a 21st century “muse.”
