  • Final Outdoor Markets of the Season

    BZcmnCNCcAADBni

Today and tomorrow are the final days for the outdoor markets around Boston. We'll be stopping by Copley Square to say, "au revoir" to many old friends.

We'll be stocking up on a few more jars of Maine Homestead's sassy, Sweet & Spicy Pickles among other things. (Yes, the folks at Maine Homestead jumped through all the Boston bureaucratic hoops and the pickles are back!)

Take a walk to your favorite market, one more time, and be sure to ask your special vendors where you can get their products during the winter. Some have found a few, new options.

    Order Your Turkey

Meet Kasey Fechtor from Stillman’s at the Turkey Farm! She's ready to take your order for a holiday turkey at the Copley Square Farmers' Market. That's one thing you can check off your Thanksgiving planning list. (You can also order, right now, online.)

    Reserve Those Pies!

You can also reserve your holiday pies or, if you're undecided which pie to feature, you can buy some small ones and have a taste-off this week. It's hard work but exploring all the options is a cook's responsibility. If you have to peel the rutabagas, you should get to taste-test the pies. The ones above are from Cook's Farm and Bakery.

    Bring Home the Keepers

To keep those last market shopping bags from bursting at the seams, stock up on some of those supplies this week and next. Winter squash, pumpkins, onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes, cranberries, apples, and carrots will keep until you’re ready to add them to your holiday meal.

Gifts for A Host or Hostess

If your role is as guest rather than chef, add a local touch with a gift from one of the artisan vendors at our local farmers' markets. One example is this selection of spreadable fruit from Deborah's Kitchen.

Or, a jar of wondeful local honey.

What's on your Thanksgiving shopping list? Will you shop for some of the meal at your local farmers' market?

  • The Pretzel at Clear Flour Bakery Is a Best Bite!

    DSC_9670 - Version 22013-11-02-clear-flour-pretzel-brookline-ma-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

A recently revitalized soft pretzel conversation on the Boston Chowhound board had me adding a pretzel to my order at Clear Flour Bakery, last week. I wish I had added a couple more. This bakery excels in delivering high quality products in the European baking tradition. Their pretzel is no exception.

    DSC_9673 - Version 32013-11-02-clear-flour-pretzel-brookline-ma-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

It has a lovely chew; a rich, brown, caramelized crust; and a lighter, airy center. You get bready bits where the pretzel is thick, and chewy bits where the stretching and knotting have created thinner areas. And, I can't say which I like best.

The flavor was so nice that Ed and I never got to try it with mustard. It was gone before we had that thought. Next time, we'll buy more and report back on our favorite accompaniments.

Here's a Boston Magazine feature about this pretzel from last year with a wonderful photo by David Arky.

If the cooler days bring out the baker in you, check out this soft pretzel recipe from the Boston Globe.

Here are a few more of our favorite items from Clear Flour:

Cherry Tart Season at Clear Flour Bakery: A Best Bite

Clear Flour Pain Meunier or Miller's Bread

Ancienne French Baguette from Clear Flour: A Best Bite

Clear Flour Bread– Clearly Artisan, Clearly Charming…

  • At The Market: Seta’s Cafe from Market to Brick and Mortar

Seta's Mediterranean Foods has quickly become a favorite with many farmers' market customers during the past few years. Now, she has opened Seta's Cafe at 271 Belmont Street in Belmont (map), and we want to wish her great success!

    1240141_584197008293728_222170497_n

In a recent update on her facebook page, she announced, "If you happen to drive by and the mums are out- we are open for business." She has some lovely pots of mums she's placing outside the door when the cafe is open.

    20100727IMG_4447 - Version 2

The menu will include the favorite items fans have taken home from the markets and those items will also be available for take out at the cafe. And, with the cafe it will be easier for Chef Seta to make a new batch when she sells out!

    6a00e54fc42bb88834017744b526f3970d-800wi

We were happy to see her Spinach Boreg better known around here as fabulous Seta Spinach Pie.

The cafe will also let her spread her wings and expand the options she can offer for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or brunch.

If you would like to learn more about this talented woman and add reasons why you should get to Belmont soon, read Edible Boston's article about her, Seta's Rules to Cook By. They cover it in greater depth, but on her about page Seta explains:

    • "Use no more than five ingredients to make a dish
    • Buy from local farmers
    • Eat/cook within season"

Sounds like a woman who grew her business at farmers' markets to us!

Seta, may all our readers find your new place and enjoy your food as much as we do! Congratulations on reaching this new phase of your business.
