  • TED Talks: Sample This One with Dan Barber

    It still surprises me when I meet someone who has not discovered TED.com. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design and spreads ideas, and I think wisdom, from great minds.

    Since so many of our readers are food lovers and environmentally responsible people, I picked one of Chef Dan Barber's Ted Talks as a sample. This one is, How I Fell in Love with a Fish.

    In his allotted 18 minutes, Barber tells a wonderful story full of his philosophy of sustainable foodways.

    From there, you are on your own. Sample these videos by topic or hit the suprise me button.

    Tickets to the TEDx conferences sell out quickly so if you want to attend keep an eye on upcoming dates.

    I find the talks to be a great way to take a mental break when I've been working for hours. You can pop over and listen while you wait for an appointment or enjoy them with your coffee in the morning. I'm sure you'll find more than a few that intrigue you.

    Have you ever walked the streets of the Back Bay and wondered about the people who lived in these buildings over the years? Now there's a website, www.backbayhouses.org, that provides insight into the ownership records and genealogy of the residents.

    The hardworking team at Back Bay Houses say:

    "A great deal has been written on the history of the Back Bay and the architecture of the houses.  A number of outstanding resources exist and more information is being added all the time through the work of historians, preservationists, and others.

    Many people, and especially those who live in the Back Bay, are interested in the personal histories of the houses – who lived in them and how they were used over the decades.  This website is designed to provide at least an entrée to that information.  In essence, it attempts to provide what might be called a genealogical history of the houses."

    We say: Bravo, Bravo! This is an outstanding new resource for residents, visitors, preservationists, genealogists, and historians.

    The site is the results of years of hard work and diligent research. And, the team is open to and will appreciate additions, corrections, additional photographs, and documentation that will add to and refine this resource.

    One recent update added the original plans of 306 Dartmouth as drawn by Peabody and Stearns in 1871.

    The B.A.A. will post split times to its website during the race. This feature, complete with search access directions, will not show up on their official site until race day.

    Mobile Phone Alert System

    The Boston Athletic Association also has set up the "AT&T Athlete Alert Program." It allows you to receive updates on a runner’s progress. Here’s how to sign-up!

    For a rough idea of where the race leaders are, in relation to your viewing position, watch the sky for the helicopters that hover above them.

    For favorites, you must rely on the roar of the crowd as they approach. Or, you can track your favorite by using the mobile alert system.
